Apple will open a later this year (Fall) in Tokyo's Ginza shopping district instead of the city's Akihabara region, Japan's biggest electronics area, in order to attract a broader clientele, according to a Nikkei English News report.

    UK Apple Stores

I would like to see Apple open stores in the UK and the rest of Europe. I bet Apples market share would rocket in these countries it they had some retail presence.

What's your problem? That Louis Vuitton post was right on the money. If you've spent 5 minutes in this country you know how trendy those stupid bags are. As for Kyoto, I was just there two days ago and there's plenty of modern stuff around. The station is really new looking, an Apple store would fit right in.

    Friggin Ginza

No kidding about the ridiculous fetish for Louis Vuitton. Hey, maybe Apple should triple the price of the iMac and 12" PowerBook, stick a designer's signature on them for no reason whatsoever, and watch their sales skyrocket among young women. They'd probably sell more computers than in the rest of the world combined. And I'm barely kidding.

Seriously, this is a very good move, and I'll bet it does very well. I want to see one somewhere where I might actually shop next time I'm there, though--how about Shinjuku or somewhere more family-friendly like Hachiohji, guys?

    Shinjuku makes more sense

They'll have to sell a huge volume of products if they even want to break even in paying the rent in Ginza, and I just can't see that happening, no matter how popular Macs are in Japan. The reason for not opening a store in Akihabara has nothing to do with wanting a wider clientele but rather a need to avoid competition with the existing Apple retailers there. It would have made more sense to open a store in Shinjuku or even Ikebukuro, where there don't seem to be any Apple retailers but are an abundance of shoppers. Akihabara is only two stations (four minutes) down from Tokyo station, where Ginza is, whereas Shinjuku serves the other side of Tokyo.

At least the appearance of the all-white spacious Apple stores is fitting for the Ginza area, but that's not where anyone is going to be buying a computer of any kind. This sounds more like a decision that came out of Cupertino than one made in collaboration with Apple Japan, which would know its market much better. I'm afraid this will inevitably be one of Apple's first stores to fail, and instead of relocating the store to the more reasonable Shinjuku or Ikebukuro, they'll just abandon the idea of Apple Stores in Japan after this inevitable failure.
