    I hate waiting...

wait, the G5 is gonna blow the socks off the G4, where is it?, The Power 4 (970?) is going to blow the socks off the G4, where is it?.

I recently tried an iMac G4 1Ghz (OSX 10.2.4) with Dreamweaver MX / Flash MX. I then used my 1.8Ghz Celeron at work ... hands down, MUCH snappier on Celeron (Windows XP). I then did simple comparisons between Office X and Office XP ... hands down, Office XP.

The more I wait, the more I can't justify a new Mac ... especially at at approximately $3000 $Canadian, versus $1200 and less, I could buy two?

Please, don't let me go to the dark side!....

    Quicktime ....

How come quicktime keeps getting better, but it keeps seeming to lose interest, mindshare? I thought there was a Japanese phone company using quicktime cuz it's based on Open Standards.

Does Apple ever push Quicktime in the Windows world?

QT vs. Real - not really.

I think the issue for QT in the biz world is a little multiheaded:
    * Real has more installed users than QT
    * Real has business apps, like for presentation work and groupware (mindshare in the organization)
    * Real had ad insertion (mindshare for marketing weasels)
    * Real encodes on PC hardware (upgrade costs do count)
    * Real's server solution sends all media types

I love QuickTime - we're going to use it here in my company because we can't afford a Real solution. But it needs better, more adult tools and SOLUTIONS for business from Apple or it's partners (but preferably Apple - we know it won't be a dead end app).

    Then don't get a Mac.

I buy a Macintosh for the user experience and the quality of the software. As a Photoshop veteran of over 7 years there is no comparison to the Macintosh user interface when it comes to workflow and creativity. If I'm not happy with the computer I work on then my work directly reflects that.

If a Windows PC can do certain tasks seconds faster than my Mac, who the h*** cares? The world isn't made up of benchmarks.

I have my Mac for work and my PC for games. If you're looking for a hardware justification to keep your Mac, then you probably shouldn't use one. It's fun to play games on a Macintosh but that shouldn't be your only reason to have it.

This years wwdc will feature more QT info than past years it seems. A good sign.

    all you mhz/intel

people who are going to post swearing you're jumping to the intel because of performance - WE DON'T GIVE A RATS a**! JUMP ALREADY! as pointed out, harley riders won't buy honda's or yamaha's even though they are FASTER and CHEAPER, it's all about the experience. so just shut the h*** up and go count your mhz in silence!

    Windows...

I can understand wanting (and even complaining a little) about the MHz gap, but I'm just getting tired of GHz freaks ranting about speed.

A big difference between Mac and Windows users are when asked "What kind of computer do you have", the Windows person will start spouting numbers and benchmarks (and rarely anything more) where the Mac person will usually spout the numbers in conjunction with projects he works on...

Macs are all about the end product and not being hassled along the way.

I'm really sad to see that QuickTime isn't used more often. I wish Apple would spend more time on the Windows player so that we could showcase it as a great application, but it is a little bloated.

    Power4 vs. 970

For the first poster: The Power4 is not the same chip as the PowerPC 970. The former is used in high-end servers, while the latter is IBMs upcoming chip that will likely be used in lower end servers and desktops...possibly from our favorite fruit company.

    Real/QT

If you read the cnet article, you'd think that Ericsson was signing an exclusive contract with Real. Read both the cnet article and the other link to last summers Apple press release. See anything that links the two? How about MPEG-4! This is a good thing both for Real and Apple. Those two will continue to close ranks with MPEG-4 and hopefully putting the proper squeeze on M$ to adopt too.

Real's Helix spin off is a more robust server solution than Apple's QTSS, but that's not to say one is better than the other. Essentially, if both architectures can stream MPEG-4 and are free to the public then I have no problems. It's a matter of what you want to pick, not what you're forced to use as in the non-standards based M$ streaming media world.

Apple's had the lead and will continue to hold that in terms of content creation being done through the QT core. Real's strength has been it's server solutions and adoptions of those in the enterprise space. Remember, Real streaming servers stream native QT content too. So, if you create content in QT (which just about everyone does), edit, and want to make the web one of your distributed domains, it makes sense to use MPEG-4 (a standard). Device manufacturers are looking for this kind of a model. Now, if it's streamed via a QTSS, Real Server, or Helix. Who cares?

This is a lot of writing really for a non-issue but, let's not lose site of the real goal both Real and Apple have, to get MPEG-4 to be an adopted standard for portable devices and other streaming needs. Then it won't matter what platform you chose, we'll all be able to see the same content. What a concept, don't threaten anyones' platform, just let them see the content. That's called playing nicely with others.
