MacNN reader BJ McLaughlin notes that LaCie is now distrubuting authoring software with its products. The software can create customized DVD with drag & drop, features 'Chapters' for easy DVD navigation, can create enhanced DVDs with photo slide show and music with playback compatibility with a wide variety of DVD players, and supports both Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X. CaptyDVD supports video and images on a single disc as well as MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and QuickTime movies as video sources. It ships with the LaCie d2 FireWire 4x DVD-Rewritable Drive ($380), and is also sold separately for $150. [updated]

"Capty DVD, the DVD authoring software from Japanese software/hardware manufacturer Pixela, now has an American distributor. LaCie of Hillsboro, Oregon has agreed to market the software in America and overseas. The firm evidentally will offer the software to the public on a standalone basis....Unlike iDVD and DVD Studio Pro, this software will run on G3 Macintoshes and work with any drive ... even those not sold by Apple or LaCie."

    Nice!

I'd sure like to use iDVD on my iBook, but I sure am happy Lacie is offering a DVD authoring solution for all of us G3 owners.

    Re: $150?

Not really. The reason Apple doesn't allow third party drives to work is because part of the profit they make selling SuperDrives subsidizes iDVD development. The $50 you pay for iDVD is really an upgrade price because you already own a Superdrive and received a previous version of iDVD when you bought your Mac - they've made more money from you than just $50.

    previous purchasers

I just bought a LaCie DVD burner directly from them less than a month ago.
I called and they told me they could sell me the software for $150 but there was no upgrade price for prevoius purchases.

Blah. I'm having a bad tech day.
I'll probably wind up getting the software, but I need to figure out a way to hide it from my husband :P

I will raise a stink with LaCie first though. I've been buying their stuff for 9+ years now and hopefully they respect a long time customer.

Still, I'm glad there is an option out there. Has anyone used it yet? Is it worth the $150?

    Capty

I have read some user comments about Capty not being very , uh, intuitive. Let's hope LaCie can put a pretty face on it. I just sold my external burner because there was no hope, and i was gonna get a formac, but now i guess i could try this out. just need to find a dvd burner!

    iDVD apple logos

I would love to use iDVD for some projects, but it sticks the apple logo everywhere, doesn't it? (at least it did in my tests)

I'd happily spend $150 for something that left its god damn logo off my content.

    iDVD apple logos

If you do not want the small Apple logo Watermark to appear on your finish product you can turn it off from the iDVD 2 menu by choosing Preferences and then deselecting the 'Show Watermark' option.

    If LaCie Can. . .

If LaCie can do it, why can't Apple? It's a valid question why Apple refuses to offer iDVD support for external burners. It seems that they only reason they do not is because they wish to ensure the extra revenue stream for DVD Studio Pro. I was hoping the new iDVD would be open to external burners, but it apparently isn't. It's too bad Apple doesn't realize external burners would help sell iDVD. Hopefully the LaCie software is good -- hopefully they'll teach Apple a lesson about competition.
