Reader: no iLife/Keynote offers for Canada

MacNN reader Terry Garbutt writes ". You can contact it at 1-800-800-2775. However that phone number is listed anywhere on the Canadian site. More to the point Apple Canada has chosen once again to lag not follow. There is no iLife/Keynote offering to the Canadian educator. The Apple Canada representative I spoke to on the 13th Feb. indicated Apple Canada was waiting to see the "reaction" the offer had in the US. They would be happy to list my "interest" and, no, I was the only one expressing this 'interest'. Another example of Apple Canada's second class treatment on Canada."

From what I can gather Canada is in fact a *different* country from the United States (you know that big gap between you guys and Mexico).

Different countries have different government regulations and ways of conducting business. What works in the USA could even be illegal in other countries (and vice versa) or at the least heavily regulated.

So Apple Canada is "waiting" to see what happens. They are most likely also figuring out how to legally implement similar plans for the Canadian market, and running the numbers to see if the effort is even worth it (that annoying thing called marketshare and all).

There is almost more to any story than most namby pamby whiners ever realize. Apple is a BUSINESS. Not a friggin UN "take money from the US to give to every country that can't do anything theirselves because they are vicious dictatorships squandering every dime they get in Swiss (German, French) bank accounts while starving their own people " charity.

Hmmm...

...I sense that an american is angry that other countries in the world aren't simply bowing to american foreign policy (i.e. Germany and France). The arrogance of the US is shining through. Only americans think the US president is the leader of the free world. This is simply not true! Leader of a backwards nation perhaps....but free world.....NOPE.

As the original article states, Canada is not getting the educational deals from Apple that the US is. This is NOT because of figuring out the market! Apple has had a Canadian applestore (online) for years.....what are they waiting to figure out!

as with every other region, and every other company, apple canada is a susidiary of the american company. with the exception that it doesn't do its own product development, it is run as a seperate company, in terms of marketing, sales channels, and operations... and reports its progress to headquarters on a regular basis.

I couldn't care less about Apple Canada's lack of educational discounts. I objected to the first and second posters response (i.e. canada sucks, and the rant on the UN taking US money and giving it to countries that don't appreciate it). The second posters references to the UN, Germany and France immediately brought to mind current world events (i.e. Iraq). I resent the fact that you (i.e. Re: Hmmm...) think that my views on american arrogance (which you once again have proven) is related to Apples business practices. I am not putting down americans because of Apple, I am putting down americans because of their foreign policies, and belief that THEY are the higher power! American arrogance leads you to believe that any attack on your way of life and government policies is unjust and unwarranted. I hate to tell you this....but the majority of the free world thinks that the US is leading us to a unnecessary and dangerous (on a world-wide scale) confrontation with not just one (Iraq) but two (N. Korea) countries.

You guys are all acting like morons. Apple is an American company. That's where it started. That's also where most of its sales come from. Apple will always release things first in the USA because its the easiest and largest place to do so.

Furthermore, the market share for Macs in Canada is S*****...horrible...AND just like the OS X 10.2 education deal came late to Canada, the iLife/Keynote deal will do the same thing.

1) Canada is larger than the US! However, the US has a higher population. Is this what you meant to say?

2) Apples marketshare is essentially the same in the US as in Canada (based on my experience). Do you have numbers to back up your statement of "the market share for Macs in Canada is S*****...horrible.."?

3) OSX 10.2 education deal was in the US and Canada at the same time!

4) Would it not be good business sense to release a product in as many places as possible? Your statement about releasing first in the US because it is bigger (see point 1) makes no sense. I mean.......really....... more people that buy a product means more money in apples pocket. They obviously have reasons for not yet offering iLife in Canada for educators....but I don't think you know what those reasons are.

Remember the "X For Teachers" program? It came to Canada a couple weeks after it was announced in the States. It's a sad commentary that you folks can't discuss a simple (though sort of irrelevant) topic like this without bashing each other. Apple Canada's slight lag has nothing to do with Bush or Iraq or our Canadian Prime Minister. I've found MacNN's user feedback becoming more and more pathetic as time goes on.

Apple Canada

As much as I would like to join a US vs. the world rant, the original post had a point-- Apple service outside the US is dismal. And Canadians are much better off than much of Europe or Asia where people have to wait aeons for repairs and have a much harder time with Applecare.

Now matter whose leader is a bigger idiot, poor customer service in an international economy is bad business and ultimately costs Apple money.

I teach in an MBA program and in Computer Science and Engineering, and give invited talks at companies, universities, and academic and inductry conferences. Some are are in Canada, some in Asia, Europe, and the US.

The more teachers use Keynote on a Powerbook, the better PR for Apple. When they are also researchers giving talks to industry groups, all the better. The researchers already have MSOffice at the academic price, so the chances they will pay list price for Keynote is pretty small. If Apple Canada was doing more than keeping seats warm they would recognize that and put some effort into getting the software out.

lots of people arguing about stuff they know nothing about, or is so six-degrees-removed from them that they have absolutely no power to change anything.

having lived in canada now for 5 years, but being an american citizen (and moving back, i might add, sometime soon), i can honestly say that BOTH countried think their S*** doesn't stink -- just for different reasons. america is agnostic of the entire global community, whereas canada is DEFINED by their southern neighbor, no matter how hard they try to escape its shadow. and who can blame them? all the f'n media up here is just recycled stuff from the US, or p*** disguised as french art flicks. 80% of the population of canada lives within 200 km of the US border, so of course they're concerned about what the americans do, ESPECIALLY as it relates to a war crisis. but then the canadians don't understand how badly they need america to define themselves. in bowling for columbine, mr. moore gets on his "why can't we be more like canada" soap box, yet doesn't realize that he answers his onw question, in a roundabout way. canada is, by his definition and implication, a SUBURB of the US. think about it. the suburbs in the states always say crime and drugs and poor education are problems for the cities, but everything is so idyllic in suburbia. same with canada. war? drugs? crime? gun control? those are all the US problems. we don't have that sort of thing in canada. except they do... they just don't get the media attention (and their media is always focused on what the us is s******* up today). their parliament is a farce, with a yammering tool as their leader as well, but he still gets re-elected. the us doesn't give a c*** about what they do to the environment, or how they socialize their children to be better people, etc. and when push really comes to shove, BOTH sides latch onto wars 50-200 years ago to prove their point. as if they personally had somethign to do with the war of 1812. wars fought by ancestors who would be ashamed at how good the current generation has it, yet still complains incessantly. you're ALL a bunch of tools, on both sides of the fence.

the above arguments are exactly why i posted. i'm not anti-canadian and i never made any remarks as such. i was however tring to remind our canadian (british) poster that america has done a lot of good. and the fact that my posting a pro-american argument is misinterpreted as being anti-canadian is a perfect example of the current sentiment that america is responsible for all that is wrong in the world. i also agree that these forums are not the place for this but silence only reinforces these ideas. part of our problem, i think, is that we are more open about our flaws (due to a free press) than other countries. but although i might be able to criticize my children, i would prefer if my neighbor would mind his own business.

so, look back at the posts...the first one was about america sucking. then i defended my country. so i guess that makes me an arrogant, anti-canadian?

THAT is why I responded the way I did.

I have 3 young children....that is why I was online on a Saturday night (not all of us are teenagers!).

It is because of my children that I'm so "ANTI-american". Which is not totally true....I'm really "anti-the-current-US-president-and-all-his-cronies" blindly dragging the world into WW3. Its not the average american that I have a problem with, many are just not aware of the situation as the US press (I'm sure) is not telling the whole truth of the situation. As a poster mentioned (very well) above, Canada is americas neighbour and will suffer as they do if anything does happen.

Canada has ben a good neighbor and friend to the US for some time.

Like people, we each have our strengths and weaknesses.

Like family, we have fought (though the war of 1812 wasn't really against Canada per se, which came into being in 1867...)

And America, like Britain, like France, like ALL powers throughout history has made some HORRIBLE choices, and done hypocritical things, steered by the vision (greed and power lust) of those that cycle through positions of import.

BUT... this thread is about Macintosh News.

There is a business decision that was made by a publicly held for-profit company. NOT A GOVERNMENTAL INSTITUTION. It may seem unfair, but since NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON has any factual information about the TOPIC and how the decision or process is managed, let's all cool off.

There are many other inequities between our nations. One to the benefit of canda, for example, is pharmaceutical prices being a fraction of what they cost in the US (where they are primarily researched and produced--and subsidized via research grants).

...yes, the international community collaborates on science, and everyday we see further as we stand on the shoulders of giants/those who came before us, etc...

There will be differences because we are different countries.

Canadian healthcare, by the way, is superior in the sense that they treat everybody. It is inferior in the rate of adoption and application of technology to the processes. Socialized medicine at work.

Neither system is perfect, and were it not for the capitalist (for profit) system in the US driving health care expenditures and research there is no question that world-wide healthcare tech would be a shadow of what it is today.

This isn't on topic either (shame on me...)

But we all need each other.

Lastly, I am proud to be an American. BUT, it is my sincere hope that the leadership of the U.S. follows to the letter international law which it helped craft. May it work through channels of diplomacy and international accord, and recognize sovereignty of foreign powers.

Would love to have DISCUSSION on this topic with folks from all over the world at a better, more appropriate place.

So lastly, Let's appreciate each other, and enjoy the fact that we share a common joy in this site, and the MAC.

apple canada really does suck. the sound of suction from markham, toronto is practically deafening. having worked with/for them in the past (back in '98), and going back now to talk to old co-workers and attend seminars, it's like the place has been in stasis ever since i left. i really thought that the "fear of steve" would put them back in line, but they could never get their act together with us/canada customs, which destroyed the apple canada online store (remember how LONG that took to get up and running?), as well as attitude like this, where they think they can do everything better than apple US, by adopting a "wait and see" approach. ugh.

This "New" service has been around for a few years now. Also, there are educator discounts and teacher pricing if you know how to get it.

There is a negative in that there is no simple click and buy for Canadians, plus no Education BTO like the US, but oh well.

You people should do a little more searching on the web before making comments like these - plus MacNN should have at least looked into this before posting it as "New".

It saddens me to see the extremist nationalism of some Americans. This is the kind of thinking that has ended us up with a religious right zealot like George W Bush in power and on the verge of an insane oil war with Iraq. George Bush is as much a religious fanatic as some of the lunatics Americans love to hate from the middle east.

I would like to point out that I am British and have, before Dubya was "elected," supported the US in much of its foreign policy. Today, however, it sickens me that my own PM and the US leader can try and justify their war against Iraq.

Remember everyone your resources are American resources just temporarily residing in your country for safe keeping. The US media like the rest of their society is a mindless propaganda machine living in mortal fear of appearing unamerican repeating and infinitim the single thought they are capable of untill someone inserters the new thought. Deep thinking in America amounts to :Do I want fries with that" or for the really deep ones should I supersize it. Fear is the perpetual state of American society, the all powerful. The only trait that exceeds American ARROGANCE is American IGNORANCE. These are the twin pillars of any American argument, based on their tiny self involved island of self deception and circular arguments.
Iraq has weapons of mass destruction, and the US can PROVE it because the US supplied the weapons! Same goes for Bin Laden trained by the US to do..guess what, I guess you got it. America creates the terrorists (freedom fighters etc) but when they stop eating American propaganda they become reclassified as terrorists.
America beleives, they created God, in their own image of course. Don't beleive it, just try to tell them different... NOBODY does propaganda as poorly as the US. But it's plenty good enough to convince an American, no matter hows pitifully stupid everyone else knows it to be.
