Greco leaves IDG, could hurt Macworld Expo

updated 10:05 am EST, Wed February 5, 2003

Macworld Expo promoter Charlie Greco is to work for tech consulting firm Gartner Group, of Stamford, Conn. The Boston Herald notes the departure may "complicate efforts to ensure that corporate star Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive, makes an appearance at the trade show next year," however, Greco said he expects to see the computer maker set up a booth alongside hundreds of companies that sell products for its machines.

    It's now CLEAR!!!

    MacWorld Expo has been steved.

To be fair, for those of us out of our teens, this show is nowhere near what is was back in the late eighties/early nineties. THOSE were the real Mac glory years!

    Yea

Unfortunately, I've never gone to one before 1999, and the ones I have gone to have only been in NY. I knew plenty of people that used to attend the Boston shows... they were a blast from what I heard.

    They'll be back!

After the economy picks-up, Apple will be back to NY (or Boston). Last years NYExpo was boring, and un-interesting. If this year's NYExpo is also boring and un-interesting then it's gonna be depressing and Apple may lose it's "wind" or whatever is left from it.

If Apple knows that they would have a Keynote demo-unit of the PPC970 by NYExpo, they wouldn't miss out on the Expo. But apparantly they won't have a demo ready by then. It would most probably be ready by 2004.

    Complicate things?

Isn't Greco the guy who was quoted making comments about how MacWorld did not need Apple? Isn't he the guy who was trying to strong arm Steve Jobs by saying that IDG would not allow Apple to pick and choose which events to attend? Isn't Greco the guy who tried to bully Steve Jobs? Talk about bad negotiation tactics!!!

Now Greco "acknowledges" that his departure could complicate things?! Give me a break!! Greco was part of the problem with the "negotiations" between IDG and Apple.

It is interesting that this favorable review of Greco comes from Boston and that it notes that Greco hopes to land a seat on the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority board of directors. He must really have them convinced that he is the good guy and that it is not his fault that Apple decided not to attend the Boston show.

With Greco gone from IDG, maybe whoever else takes over negotiations will be smarter and cut a deal with Apple to get them to attend.

    Who needs MacWorld Expo?

IDG is a non-entity: a pay for hire shill. No real alligiance, no real loyalty, no tangible product or benefit.

MacWorld will continue in one reincarnation or another. If IDG is out of the loop, good riddance.
