Open-source project brings Linux to the iPod

updated 02:20 pm EST, Tue February 4, 2003

", 0, 0);

is an open-source project by Bernard Leach designed to port Linux to the iPod: "Unfortunately the iPod is considered a "closed-platform" by Apple and technical info is virtually non-existant so this has involved a fair bit of guess work, reverse-engineering and experimentation! But the end result is a Linux kernel (based on the uClinux port) running on the 'Pod. I hope that this initial port provides some inspiration to others out there to see what more they can get the iPod to do!"

    Why... Why....?

    Why is linux on the iPod important. Does everything has to be running Linux nowadays? Next thing you know my car will be running Linux.

    Why... 2 words:ogg vorbis

    Support for this is what lots of folks have been clamoring for... with linux running on it we won't have to wait for apple to support (if ever) this open source format. This is a big advantage some palyers like the Archos jukebox have. I hope the iTunes plugin for the iPod wouldn'ts have to be modified though.... we might end up with a situation like iCommune on our hands. ah... legal.

    you know...

    let's just keep the Linux people happy, for all i care... since i see no other reason for it. These Unix/Linux people are gonna make or brake the mac in the near future.

    LOL

    This is great. Not that I have a need for this, but it really kicks a**. What I think it demonstrates even more is that the iPod is extremely capable.

    But this won't give it, since they're running a whole new OS/kernel on the iPod, you'd have to write an entirely new music player app to get your precious Ogg format. Then its not the iPod, its your iOgg player.
