Verax says it is developing a special , in response to reader issues with the Power Mac G4 (Mirrored drive): "We ask G4 owners who are annoyed by the Mac noise to wait patiently until the end of February. We will then publish complete information about the Verax G4 solution on the Verax homepage."

    Not just only MDD models

Throw in the Quicksilvers as well. The revolving humming noise is annoying.

    Don't hold your breath .

Just something you should know about the Verax fans:

-They are the best designed and quietest fans I have ever used.
-They use rubber grommets (washers) to isolate noise (much like submarine engines have isolators from transferring vibration to hull)

I've replaced the side (door) fan of my MDD with a Verax 60mm x 60mm fan and its far quieter than the model Apple supplied. But- you sacrifice noise for aiflow. You seem the CFM is almost half that of the original fan. So half the noise.

I also used Pabst fan (120mm) to replace the larger Heatsink fan and it by fan reduced most of the noise.
But its the powersupply's two smaller fans that are the noisiest; replacing those (and removing some metal) has quieted it somewhat...but the heat coming out has me worried...

Wait till you see the external ductwork I designed...looks like dust extraction from Norm's New Yankee Workshop. And will cool it considerably.

    It's pretty pathetic...

... when a problem has reached a porportion where 3rd party vendors spring up to fix a design defect that Apple explicitly designed into the product.

The fans on these units (when on the high setting) are ridiculous. Steve Jobs should be forced to have 10 of these in his office on the high setting until the problem is solved. Granted, the "new" MDD units are supposed to be quieter, but what about the rest of the faithful, i.e. the MDD customers to date?

This is yet another example of bean-pinching by Apple up-front that later bites them in the rear. Just like when they saved a couple of cents in the base station by specifying cheap capacitors, only to face a tidal wave of customer frustration and anger a year later when all the units started failing en masse.

Heat management in the MDD models is going to continue to be a problem as Apple tries to pinch more performance out of a tired chipset while cramming as much hardware as possible into a small space. Something has to give!

    ...has to give...

and that "has to give" means new case design. However, I strongly suspect that IF they are going to use the 970, then they HAVE to do some redesign of the motherboard. It makes perfect sense to FINALLY go with a re-designed case. I suspect late summer into fall is the likliest timeframe.

    Thanks to T.U.

I received a mail from Verax about 2 months ago now, in which they asked us a G4 to 'play' with. T.U., from Germany went to their headquarters and had his G4 fixed by hand by Verax engineers. He is a pretty MDD G4 owner since... before he was one of the many unhappy ones. You can read his story and view pictures of the Verax visit at http://www.G4noise.com

    audio hum

How about someone addressing the audio hum problem coming out of both the headphone jack and the rear audio port? Apple says that it is a ground loop problem. But their fix doesn't solve the whole problem.

    what loud noise?

I dont seem to notice anything. Sometimes I hear a high pitched whine, but that's cuz its so hot under my desk. All you people do is complain. You will NEVER get a quiet machine unless you all designate a certain part in your households to be at the right temperature.

Go use a PC or purchase a 3rd party fan....and cry me a river haha!

    No noise problem here

We bought an 867 dual mirrored computer and had Apple install the SCSI hard drive with a single 36 gig 10,000 rpm Seagate when we ordered it. We like the speed bump offered by this faster HD.

We have never experienced the noise issue so many owners seem to have. It is actually quieter than the beige G3 266 it replaced.

The only issue is that the ATTO card would not allow deep sleep until the ATTO firmware was updated. But that was fixed a few months ago.

We run intensive graphics programs, MYOB, Office X programs, Quake III, Diablo carbon version, Alien Predators (and many other programs) and Virtual PC when booted from OS 10.2.3 as well as 9.2.2. We run OS X 95% of the time now. But there were no noise issues ever on this unit. It still runs quietly.

Maybe the faster processors run hotter and ramp up the fans to high on a continual basis. Maybe our computer has never had to run on high (to our knowledge) so we have not experienced this noise. Strange.

    Xserves

Wait until you hear the Xserves go. If you think you have a sound problem on the MDD (I have 4 in one office)
