Mac OS 9.1 details available, due Tuesday

updated 07:48 am EST, Thu January 4, 2001

As hinted by Apple's Tech Info Library, Mac OS 9.1 is due next Tuesday with a new nanokernel, new process manager, FireWire 2.7, a new version of OpenGL, a Mac OS-X compatible startup disk control panel, and access to iTools via Apple's navigation services, according to the PowerBook Zone. It is reportedly not (yet) fully compatible with Mac OS X, but will be when the final version of Mac OS X ships in a few months. According to the report, Mac OS 9.1 will be available Tuesday as a 72MB download, a free upgrade on CD ($20 shipping charge), a $100 retail CD version that includes the full version of Mac OS 9.1, and will be bundled with the Apple Pro Keyboard to enable the volume and eject buttons to function on older Macs. (For more OS 9.1 information, see AppleInsider)

    OS 9.1

Does your notice imply that the download version won't contain all the same software as the CD? Will the CD contain a full version of OS9, then the updater for 9 to 9.1 (like the OS 8.6 CD? A little more detail would be appreciated,, but I thank you for the update, MacNN.

    CD vs D/Load

The D/load (or $20.00 CD) wil be an updater for systems already running OS9 or 9.0.4. The $100.00 CD will be a full installer that does not rely on OS9 already being installed.

    free with keyboard?

You say in the article that a full version of 9.1 will be bundled with the pro keyboards.

So, who the h*** is gonna buy the shrinkwrapped 9.1 for $100?
The pro keyboard is only $59!!!!

If it's true, then Apple are gonna shift an awfull lot of keyboards.

I guess it's just another day in the wacky world of Apple sales.

The released version will probably be very close, if not identical to the golden master released by Apple weeks ago. The CD will contain the installer, plus all the other "goodies" like Internet Explorer, Acrobat Reader, and all that stuff.

A word of caution -- if you have Toast, I would make sure to burn a system bootable CD of 9.1 after you update from 9.0.4. I tried starting up a Mac running 9.1 using a 9.0.4. system disc and it didn't work. Started up fine with 9.1. Word to the wise.

    Free with keyboard? No.

They're bundling the updater version, not the full version. Took me a minute to figure that out too, but it wouldn't make any sense for them to bundle the full, would it?

Well, I tried it with my MacOS 9.0 US-CD, and it worked without problems. It's an old world machine, maybe that matters.

This update isn't really something revolutionizing. If you want something that really works, use MacOS X PB.

    Re: QT5

I'm going to venture to say that QT5 will not be bundled. It seems that the release cycles for the OS and QT have been separated of late. The QT team has their own group of 100 ppl at Apple afterall...

    MacOS 9.1

Don't know if anyone has seen this yet, but there us a new folder under apple's ftp site called New System, probably where 9.1 will be posted.

    Update CD 0w/$59 Keyboard

    Quote from the PowerBookZone site:
The upgrade also will ship with the pro keyboard, as 9.1 will enable the volume and eject buttons on that keyboard for older USB Macs. Note that this isn't a free keyboard with purchase of the upgrade, it's a free upgrade with purchase of the keyboard.

So, it seems that if you want the upgrade CD, you can shell out another $40 and get the Pro keyboard bundled with the update if you like.
