Apple today announced to .Mac members that both will be available as downloads on January 31st from Apple's Website. Update: One reader reports that the Apple store in West Hollywood has iLife in the stores for sale this evening.

Huh?

I'm not only a .mac memeber I have also ordered iLife.

I haven't received any notices that iLife is shipping. My order is still listed as OPEN at the Apple.com store. I also haven't received any notices from my .mac membership about ilife either.

How do you get on this exclusive mailing list?

Here's the text of the message:

On Jan. 31, iPhoto 2 and iMovie 3 will join iTunes 3 as free downloads available at www.apple.com. iDVD 3 will also be released, and all four applications—bundled under the name iLife—can now be ordered on CD and DVD for $49.00. iLife is also included on new Mac computers.

The new iLife versions feature tighter integration among the four applications. For example, you gain full access to your iTunes and iPhoto libraries in iMovie 3, where you'll also find features like a new easy-to-use special effect named after Ken Burns (the documentary filmmaker who showed us all how much emotional impact can be wrung from the dynamic presentation of still photos with the clever use of pan and scan).

The integration of .Mac and iPhoto has been tightened, too. When you publish HomePage photo albums from iPhoto 2, you can choose immediately between two and three columns for the format and add a counter and a Send Me a Message button to the page. You can also now publish .Mac Slides screensavers directly from iPhoto.

The feature it will have to have to be interesting to me would be the ability to add images without copying them to the iPhoto directory. I want it to work like iTunes, where it just keeps a reference to where the photos are on your hard drive. Otherwise it is a huge waste of disk space.

I am a .mac member and I wasnt notifed. I did order iLife and was notified that it shipped yesterday. So I should have it tomorrow. I think iPhoto 2 is going to be a big improvement, actually they all will. Cant wait to try them out.

Kudos to Apple for offering all these apps (with the exclusion of iDVD) for 'free'! And adding additional functionality as part of the .mac subscription service. Is paying $100 (per year) that much to ask when these applications could've cost $100s from other vendors?

For all .mac members w/o a notice, just pipe down dang-it! This is always the case. You will get yours...it just hasn't arrived yet. I don't really care how "unsuccessful" .mac sign-up has been, but do you really think that ALL of the people would receive their emails at the same time?

All .mac members should get it. I 've noticed that the mail out usually comes in alphabetical order. so your's probably just didnt reach yet. I got mine... and my user name starts with U.... so if ure after U... then u should get it soon. If your before U...Uhhh.. I don't know what to say.

I, too, wish iPhoto were like iTunes in its management of files. In fact, it should be an even better implementation than that of iTunes, in that we should be able to not even worry about a particular library. This would make for easy archiving and transportation.

What is interesting...

What is interesting about iPhoto 2? One small feature that doesn't get a lot of press: Faster performance with large libraries. My iPhoto library is pretty big, and its nearly impossible to use iPhoto. My Dad's XP machine, sadly, is much better for importing, sorting, and viewing photos.

Being Able to Archive to CD/DVD is HUGE. Now I can keep libraries with thumbnails on something other than my hard disk. I can easily archive the 1000+ images on numberous CDs for FREE. My other option was Cumulus which does the same thing for a mere $500

iphoto2

iphoto2 works pretty nicely with my large 3000+ photo library (still a little slow, but what do you expect with that many photos?) and i cannot wait to get a dvd-r to backup/store some pictures. the auto-enhance and touch-up features are really convenient.
as for having photos not copy themselves into the library...iphoto (1 and 2) keeps backups of the original pictures in case of a bad modification. this would not be possible if iphoto did not copy the pictures into its own library folder. i believe this is one of the main reasons for having to import all pictures.

iPhoto 2 showstopper

The key thing I want in iPhoto 2 is the ability to download SOME of the pictures from my camera. I have a 256MB flash card and I don't neccessarily want to download/clear all the contents every time I connect it to my iBook. Because iPhoto 1 lacks this I've been using the (excellent) Image Capture app to grab only the photos I want and then manually importing them into iPhoto. Kind of a hassle. Really hope iPhoto 2 will have this.

It most likely isn't being sent to you because you opted out of being sent their email. Since this stuff isn't .Mac related, why would you expect them to tell you (and you'd be pretty pissed if you opted out of being sent email and then got it).

iPhoto and Broadband

In terms of the differences in how iTunes and iPhoto manage files... I think it is justified by the differences in function. iTunes is just a player (side-stepping the editing of ID3 tags). iPhoto is an editor... it abstracts away from files... and so may be a better approach to some users... but the way it manipulates and stores files pretty much requires an import/export library, to keep integrity.

What I think iPhoto needs the most... and perhaps the CD/DVD burning is a step in the right direction, is the ability to have multiple discrete sets of photos... not all jumbled up into one library. Photos, unlike music, do have an inherent grouping.

As to broadband... don't know where you are (though I hope it's Hawaii or Japan... if you're still at work waiting)... but basically you have the choice between DSL and Cable. Both put you at the mercy of, respectively, the local Bell, or cable monopoly. However, with DSL, you usually have a wide choice of ISP, whereas with Cable choice is small, usually one.

You can expect to pay anywhere from $30 to $50 a month for basic residential service... though this usually entails a year-long contract. There is a healthy Cable vs. DSL competition in most places... so look for deals on Cable/DSL modems (should be free with contract), as well as reduced introductory rates.

Good to find a Mac-friendly ISP, but pretty much any will do if the you have the technical wherewithal to withstand Mac abuse. I personally use Earthlink DSL, with DSL provided by Qwest. (But by signing with Earthlink, they take care of ordering the DSL.)

For me, Earthlink is a nice median between the big nationals (AOL, MSN, ATT, Baby Bells, and CableCos) and the small local ISPs. You can take advantage of Earthlink's nationwide dial-up network when you are away from home... and they partner with Apple, so they are pretty Mac-neutral to friendly.

He's not making it up. Everyone here who owns both platforms knows that iPhoto is an absolute dog compared to Windows image catalogers (all of which can easily handle 50,000+ images without any noticeable performance degradation on a moderate system).

By making sure that those Mac users who forked off $$$ for the over-priced .Mac service feel they get something, iLife apps are first available in .Mac user's iDisk areas for download... Oh wait, that would make sense, and that's probably why I've been looking for those 'free downloads' in vain.

In addition, seeing as how I ordered my iLife bundle right after the keynote, I should have been able to expect, as an early supporter, to receive my iLife *in my hands* by today -- instead, French and UK users have received theirs first, then Apple Stores (meaning that it shipped to them at least 4 days ago), while I'm just being informed that mine has been SHIPPED and will get to me in 4-5 days.

In other words, I'll most likely be downloading the free apps, and grabbing the iDVD image from a 'board' before I get my legit versions. Great going -- really working hard to motivate users to use .Mac and to order from Apple.
