Apple sues Unova for patent infringement

updated 06:25 pm EST, Sat January 25, 2003

Apple has filed a lawsuit accusing hand-held scanner maker Unova of without permission, according to Bloomberg:

"Unova's Intermec unit is using the patented technology in software and scanners that are hand-held or mounted on vehicles and used by delivery people or warehouse workers, Apple claims. The suit seeks to bar Unova and Intermec from selling machines and software that rely on Apple's innovations, including those related to data transmission and the voltage on circuit boards.

"Apple's suit is the latest chapter in a fight over technology between the two companies as Unova sued Apple and other computer makers last May, claiming infringement of a patented invention to monitor use and recharging of portable computer batteries. Unova has collected at least $150 million in legal settlements from laptop makers over the 'smart battery' patent."

    why

These lawsuits are frivilous. All an attempt to keep the stocks up and make money. It's all about the little things to these small companies. Also like the SBC International Patent that has been circling around. I hope people can at least get their patents planned out instead of chasing others for no reason.

    volts

voltage on circuit boards.... I didn't know you could patent something like that. Maybe I'llp put out some patents for all type of voltages for other products, and future products, like flying cars...

    re: Why

Any money recieved in a lawsuit has very little affect on the companies stock price. The lawsuit is to protect the company's interests, no company can plan to make their annual income by lawsuits. Only lawyers can plan that way. A company might as well hope to make their quarterly earnings by playing the lottery.

    No, Apple's right!

Apple is protecting ALL our interests with this lawsuit. Unova IS one of those companies who's main income is their extortion -- uh, I mean lawsuit -- activities. Just like that crazy Doctor who tried to sue Apple for $3 BILLION by claiming to have invented Colorsync. Now that was frivolous, and it dragged on for *three years.*

    Go Apple! Nuff said.

This may be a legit case, but blame this mess on the patent office, which has been granting undeserved patents at an accellerated rate since '90. I don't think they even read filings anymore, since they've been giving patents to companies (read SBC) for ideas already in use. defensive move

This is a move by Apple to defend itself against the "smart battery" suit that unova filed against Apple. Unova is trying to enrich itself off suing others and Apple is defending itself saying: "Oh yeah, well take that" . They will end of cross licensing their patents.

    defensive

This is defensive on Apple's part. I don't know what their patents read, but I know that Unova has valid patents on battery systems used in hand held devices that they have been selling for over 20 years, since before laptops existed. These devices needed many tricks to make good use of what little power was available. As they say, neccessity is the mother of invention.
