MacNN reader Chris Schmid notes that AirPort Extreme, based on the 802.11g standards, will not be available in Switzerland due to certification problems by the Swiss certification authority Bakom, according to an [German?]. It is not known when AirPort Extreme will be approved and sold by Apple Switzerland.

    Airport Extreme

It is just the sort of issue that initially held up Airport adoption in France. No big deal.

    It was meant to happen

Swiss people are like that. At least the ones in administration. Don't hesitate to do something stupid if it can bother a maximum of citizens. I know it, I've been living here since I was born.

I thought the frequencies were the same as 802.11b? What's the matter then?

And yes, it is a big deal as it will delay new PowerBook shipments for those who already ordered with an AP card (12" are supposed to be available real soon) and it will be quite tedious for people who already have an Airport network and want a new PowerBook to order the machine and the card separately and use their machine without network for 3 months (optimistic case, Swiss admin is really slow, except for sending tax declarations).

As for the first comment (Aren't those places just getting electricity?), it's the opposite. We'll soon have no electricity anymore if the government succeeds in making the electricity providers private. Can you say California or Spain?

    Swiss Admin

Well as a Swiss I can ensure you it's their own fault. The Bakom (Swiss Federal Authority for Communication) has always been a place for stupid bureaucrats on some nationalist ego-maniac trip. Since the Swiss aren't able to join the EU like the rest of western Europe they also don't have the same common certification authorities. But instead of just taking the same set of rules for the time being they have to put up their own. Now, companies who certify their stuff for the EU and forget that they have to play another game with the Swiss can't get their products out in time.

Environmental laws are good and necessary, but this has nothing to do with it. It's because of the stupid freaking Swiss sandbox Army who reserves more frequency bands than any other Swiss authority and puts limits on the other bands in terms of output power to no end. That's why the Bakom needs their own rules and can't just follow EU certification. A couple of years ago even cordless phones had to be specially manufactured for Switzerland - you can imagine how many companies are gonna do that for the 7 million Swiss.

I'd say, get rid of the Swiss Army, adopt EU certification guidelines and give me my new 12" PowerBook with AE. :)

    Oh No!

Dear me! This worries me greatly. The Swiss are the linchpin of the entire Apple strategy. This will make me run out and buy a Dell, dude. OK, sarcastic road trip over.

    EU

I've kind of noticed that, and I find it really really weird.

I could never understand why Norway or Switzerland have held back from the EU. At least Norway is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA), AFAIK I don't think Switerzland is even a member of that.

    Send some electricity

At least Switzerland HAS electricity on a regular basis. Here in the Republic of Georgia I probably have one of the only Airport networks in the country, 'cept it only works about half the time since the power is out so much.

At least we have water at the moment (though no natural gas).
