Half Keyboard to debut next week

updated 04:00 pm EST, Wed January 3, 2001

At Macworld Expo next week, Matias Corporation will unveil its Half Keyboard for Mac. The $100 device allows users to quickly type with just one hand using existing touch-typing skills and is scheduled to ship later this month. The idea for the Half Keyboard was originally conceived on a Mac in 1984, says inventor Edgar Matias, and original prototypes were used on a Mac 512. Maitas will be exhibiting at booth #1748.

I *have* to have one of these. Get the demo at their site. I'm hooked.

    Is it a joke?

I don't care how small it is. You just decreased your wpm from 100 to 8. I would rather lug around a full size keyboard and be able to work productivly than use a half size keyboard because it is small.

    Read the description

"We've measured speeds as high as 64 words per minute. That's 3 to 6 times the speeds possible on other handheld computers. Why such a big difference? Touch typing. A half keyboard, with its full-sized keys, lets you touch type with one hand. Other handhelds have miniature keyboards that force you to hunt and peck, which is slow, or to use a pen, which is even slower."

Maybe 64 WPM is a stretch, but if I can get anything above 30 I'll be satisfied (I type at 120 WPM on a qwerty keyboard). They don't intend this to replace a full size keyboard... if you can't imagine a use for it in your life, pass it up, but if you can, perhaps its worth a shot.

    For Apple employees

This keyboard is small enough to hide in Steve Jobs comm meetings. You can take notes and he won't yell at you in front of everyone in Town Hall.

    Add the other half

Add the other half of a brain and you might realize you aren't the entire market, which is a damn good thing.

    Dummies.

This is good for Mac users with one hand. The other use for it is also valid, though.

    Almost, but not quite.

I'm always on the lookout for good one-handed input devices, but they're all too damn slow, including this one. Shame, really.

The fold-up Palm keyboard is a work of genius, BTW.
