Connectix has released for Mac OS X, which fixes a problem that made it impossible to run TurboTax for Windows in emulation mode, as well as a crash that occured when attempting to startup Virtual PC in full screen mode. The new release also makes minor corrections to the Japanese localization of Virtual PC.

Oh, the people on these boards are so witty! And they certainly don't tell the same tired jokes over and over again!!

But sarcasm aside, I think its pretty cool that Connectix fixed the problem with TurboTax that Intuit said was caused by their lame copy-protection schemes and not fixable.

    infection

nice... VPC now lets you virtually infect your machine with the Turbotax Copyprotection worm... now the Mac And VPC (at least TTax) can monitor everything your CD rom does...

    RE: Infection

The beauty of VPC is that you can install Turbotax, do your taxes, and then return the PC to its pre-Turbotax state just by discarding the hard drive changes. Or you could duplicate the PC, do Turbotax, and then go back to the original PC.

    PC vs VPC

It's actually not that much more expensive, if not cheaper, to buy a real PC at the price Connectix puts its stuff out at. Remember when this was the cheap alternative to SoftWindows? Why would you use VPC with its sucky speed when you can buy a $200 eMachine with rebates from Best Buy and use the new Windows networking features built into OS X by running an Ethernet cable between the two? Just silly.

    You're Missing the Point

Intuit's new copy protection scheme actually infects the PC with a program that writes itself to a hidden unused portion of your hard drive. Once it's on there, you can't remove it short of reformatting the drive. So, moving to a PC and using TurboTax is a BAD move. You can read more about this here: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,815693,00.asp

Use at your own risk. Personally, I'm going to use TaxCut and have already emailed everyone I know regarding this issue.

Sometimes having two machines is completely impractical, e.g. using a PowerBook on the move. Even at work I'd prefer to test my web sites on VPC than have to boot up a completely seperate PC for this purpose. Also, being able to drag and drop between the two environments can be very useful...

Of course, it helps that my employer is paying for VPC rather than me :)

    a real PC works

I admit I sometimes dabble with Virtual PC. But, I have a real PC that's perfect when used with Microsoft's remote client software. No need for anything other than an extra minitower hidden out of the way.
