Hollywood uses PC's that run Windows or Linux. SGIs are slow, as are macs. Last time I saw Maya benchmarks, a dual 1.25GHz was four to six times slower than a 1800MHz dual Athlon system.

As far as the discreet systems go, it's still a majority of IRIX (SGI) systems in Hollywood. They'll use the "slow" SGI desktop systems to create and the faster, larger multiprocessing systems to render.

I would definitely believe that Maya is running mostly on Intel/AMD systems in Hollywood, but your claim that on a 1.8 Ghz AMD system, it runs "four to six times slower" than a 1.25 Ghz G4 is a little hard to believe.

Also, speaking of Discreet stuff, I saw the Discreet booth at Macworld last week and they blew me away. Combustion is very cool, and runs very well on a MDD G4 system. I'm very seriously thinking of "switching" to Combustion from After Effects... especially at the new price point.

Dual G4 1.25GHz takes 2min 26 seconds to render the scene and the Dual Athlon MP 1.7GHz takes 31 seconds. That's just about 5 times faster with midrange Athlon MPs (they go up to 2GHz currently).

I believe that Combustion and Cleaner are the only apps that Discreet makes that run on all three (win, irix, osx) platforms. According to that demo I saw, Combustion runs circles around After Effects, as far as speed and useability go.

By the time the PPC970 arrives, dual Xeons will be up to at least 3.6GHz and AMD's Opeteron processor will be shipping in multiprocessor workstations. From all the estimates reported for the PPC970 and AMD's Opteron, the PPC970 is no match for it.

4.5 on OS X is awful when compared to a PC equivalent. Nevermind rendering, just navigating the UI is a hassle...take OS X's lack of snappiness and magnify it by about oh.....remember OS 10.0?

actually, i've used both on a dual 800 and dual 1 ghz, and combustion is waaaaay slower and crashes a lot. and it has a completely different workflow that takes a while to get used to. after effects is a whole lot more stable, and integrates with photoshop and illustrator and final cut a lot better. don't get me wrong, combustion's features are great (awesome color correction, keying, motion tracking, particle effects), but for basic motion design, after effects is a whole lot faster and more efficient, at least on the mac.

Not the Hardware

Hardware can only do what the software tells it to...It's not Apple's fault that the software companies cannot write software that is not optimized for the hardware or just plain crashes a lot.

I model on a Mac and Render on a PC (when in a crunch). Anything that I have to interact with for more than 10 minutes I will use a Mac. Rendering only requires me to load the file and set the rendering.

You can't say something is "X times slower" or "Y times less" (i.e. multiples with a negative word)

One times slower makes no sense. One time less is zero, so what is 10 times less?

Something is half as fast or twice as much or one-tenth as much, not "two times slower" or "10 times less"

Just a personal pet peeve. :)
