First post was stupid

I know people have been raging about the ctrl-click, but it's more of an isolated incident if it actually is. How many people of the 500000+ have actually had that happen? Also, why can't anyone seem to remember what page they were looking at, and what files they were downloading? I find it kind of odd. It's almost like a FUD thing...

Crash!

Just downloaded the update, relaunched and Safari no longer works.. crashes everytime on launch.. and I can't find the older version of Safari.. so I'm screwed until they update again.. fun..

I'm the guy.. that posted about the crash in Safari.. I deleted everything related to Safari, blew out my cache, then restarted.. It works now!! I had to take the time to set it up again, but it's pretty easy.. I was terrified that I would have to go back to IE.. whew!

The old version...

Also deleted the symbolic link /tmp which pointed to /private/tmp on my machine. Apple support told me this is one of the fixed issues.

I had

a problem too. The browser just stopped working this morning. I went off to work and talked to one of my coworkers who suggested to repair the disk. I came home and repaired the disk and that didn't work. I then deleted all references to safari, including the preferences (com.apple.Safari.plist. If you do a search and delete all references to Safari and then reinstall the program it will work. I am posting this in a reinstalled Safari. I hope this helps.

Fixing the update

Deleting only

/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist

is enough to get the update working again.

When applications crash on start a bad pref or config file is propably the source of the trouble 8 out of 10 times.

Safari downloads to the desktop. I had moved it to the applications folder. When I launched from the desktop or toolbar or anywhere else, the v48 (applications folder) safari launced. When I moved the v51(new) safari to the applications folder - forcing a move of v48 to the trash, everything worked fine. Old preferences and bookmarks remained.

This is a very good sign!

That was a very quick update to a problem that fortunately affected only a very small group of beta testers. That's what we all are beta testers of Safari so please don't forget that when you make comments on this very promising bit of software. Apple is listening to its beta testers and it's just a matter of time before tabs and other "missing" features are added to Safari. Apple wants to make this browser the best and most Mac like out there so here's are chance to tell them how to accompish that.

Well, there is some kind of hebrew support. Yet, they should improve support for all hebrew encodings.
For the moment, about 50% of hebrew sites are readable.

What? You mean they've had all that time since the last release and they haven't fixed all the reported problems with this thing? Dammit! That's it, I'm going back to windows. At least there, you have a bug, there's no way to report it to even give you the thought they might fix it.

Downloads

And what's the deal with downloads? I go to download a file, and it automatically unzips it, and, if its a dmg, loads it up, which for safari runs some script to build the app. I hate this kind of c***. I prefer to download a bunch of stuff, then deal with them later, not have my browsing interrupted with a bunch of d*** copy runs and Expander jumping all around. I'd delete the helper apps, or set a switch, but there is no settings for any of this c***. Anyone know a solution.

So, does this thing work now with self signed certificates? Its not like everyone on the net is going to pay verisign...

I'll have to give it another 15 minute try. It took Mozilla a year to impress me and I threw them out about 10 times before they convinced me to replace iCab.

Well, you still have to goto verisign and pay money now to secure your sites. ( if you use safari )

I just put Safari in the trash and deleted it. Maybe next time they will win me over.

I sense,

A lot of angry Chimera Users. Lets not get into trolling because of envy. Apple has a great browser as it stands and will get better. This should not threaten people using other browsers. In the end there will be two good browsers. Chimera and Safari. Both W3C compliant, the most important piece of the puzzle.

As for the person who don't like to have downloads automatically launch and do thier thing, turn if off in General section of the refs. I personally like this feature, but can see the need to have the ability to turn of the extraction and mounting of files after downloading while at the same time autolaunching "safe" files still. Have you sent in your suggestion (complaimt?) to Apple yet?

new features

so far, what i have noticed in the new version of safari is a progress/task bar that also shows the url of a link on rollover.

its in the view menu item and called "status bar"

once you turn it on, there is a line added to the bottom of the window.

thanks for listening to the pubic beta testers on this one apple! i look forward to seeing the other wantd features implemented. more importantly, the bugs removed.

it was already there. but yeah it is cool since it's a little smarter than other status bars. if you hold command and hover over a link, it changes to "open 'link' in a new window" and holding option and hovering over a link changes it to "download 'link'." hopefully they add more smart status bar updates in there.

but for browsers, all i really want at this point is FULL COMPATIBILITY and SPEED. i want all web pages to work exactly as they're supposed to and as fast as safari is. fix the compatibility issues and you've got a winner.

i've really been hoping IE 6 would come out from MS but i still like IE's fuller feature set, though Safari has won me over from the speed aspect.

What's full compatibility? I mean, how many web sites actually look the same in any collection of browsers, regardless of so-called standards and the such. And this may be what you want, but the likes of MS try to keep filling them up with useless features (exactly why does my browser have auction tracking built-in?) to supposedly make them more attractive (hey, its the same with Word, a freakin' word processor with 19,000 useless features for 95% of its users).

Also take into account that you might get what you want, but then you still need other things to make browsing quicker and easier (say, tabbed browsing, bookmark management, etc). Hey, take IE for windows (please!). Its got so-called great compatibility (probably because everyone just codes for it), but they haven't changed how they do bookmarks much since v4 (or probably 3). Its rediculous. Apple has a new concept (new to me, at least), actually being able to customize your bookmarks menu with just the bookmarks you want to see, and having other bookmarks available for the few times you want to use them. My Mozilla and iCab bookmarks contained everything I've ever saved, regardless of whether I might not use most of the bookmarks. With Safari, I can put just my normal bookmarks in the menu, and throw the rest aside for those rare times I want to use them.

Oh well, enough railing on the "Well, it doesn't do what I want so its c***!" people.

Certificates and toolbar.

For certificate handling, try Safari Enhancer, which turns on a debug menu in Safari that gives more flexibility on handling certificates.

Support probably not in there because it hasn't been perfected yet (or the proper interface hasn't been made).

Here's a tip. If you hit command-, it will load the website for the corresponding bookmark on the bookmark bar. So, command-2 will load my second bookmark.

I have read numerous complains on here about bookmark management in Safari. Can someone tell me what the problem is? I find the bookmark management to be one of the best of all the browsers out there. How much simpler can it get?

I agree. That was one of the things that made me hate Chimara (well, that and the fact that Chimara ran slower on my system than IE did).

Apple has a winner here, they just need to keep updating it on a regular basis, and not s**** up. But then again, that is what we all want software developers to do.

Some features and alterations I would like to see added...

Feature? TextEdit-style spell checking within forms
Alteration? A "customize address bar" option rather than 5-10 lines of selectable options.
Feature? Auto Fill forms (the only feature of IE that is useful)
Feature? Tab Web Browsing (the only feature of Chimera that is usefu)

Well, I guess if you're running a software house and releasing test builds, you can call them what you want. Unfortunately, companies have been putting out 'beta' releases which are not feature complete or set in functionality for many, many, many years. And the truth is many computer users are used to the term 'beta' to mean 'not done yet'. Except for the geeks, releasing "Safari 0.8 alpha" will only bring out "huh?"s.

Let's ask you this. If everyone is clamoring for tabbed-browsing, additional certificate handling, etc, would you insist that Apple not include it in the first full release, but wait for v1.1? One reason to have public betas is to allow users to not only test out the software, but also get some real feedback as to what 'almost required' features are missing.

yeah, anyone remember Q3Test (preview release of Quake3, NOT THE DEMO, Q3Test was before the demo). There were a large ammount of changes between the origional Q3Test release and the final GM release (Gold Master for those not in the know).

Things like User Interface overhauls, arena modifications (maps were slightly re-edited to balance out game play), weapons speeds were changed, etc.

If anyone thinks the feature set of Safari is complete, you are sadly mistaken. I would say the feature set is between 50% to 75% complete, but that is just me. Usability is about 95%, which is great for a web browser's first release.

Can't stand iCab, crashes too much. Can't stand Chimera for the reasons I stated above (about it being slower than IE on my system). Can't stand IE (it's IE). Can't stand Mozilla (too slow to start up, very slow browsing, and a crappy user interface). Apple has hit every basic and intermediate feature dead on.

No one complains when someone asks the creator of iCab or Chimara to add a feature or two, but when someone asks for Apple to add an extra feature, people go nuts. Double Standards, the bane of us all.

Flash

Flash is still not fixed. Still runs twice as slow as IE.
I just don't know how many years I can b**** about Flash sucking on the Mac. It's getting to the point where I'm going to have to get a PC to do my Flash work.
I mean this is just ridiculous.

Flash has always ran fine for me. Sometimes it does have a little slowdown here and there, but that is a rare case. I won't admit that I know exactly what slows down Flash at times, because when it did slow down for me the circumstances were completly different each time.

You morons complaining about Flash speed don't seem to realize that most people _hate_ Flash websites. The damn thing is overused; idiotic web designers who actually know nothing about designing proper web sites are usually the only people who actually like and care about Flash.

So, to whoever was complaining about Flash support in Safari: f*** YOU. I, for one, don't give a flying rats a** about whether or not you're going to switch to PC for your Flash "work." Go ahead, see if anybody cares.

Let me chime in as one of those "most people" who hate Flash. Who ever thought it was a good idea in the first place, other than site designers who want to show how artsy they are? Arc'teryx makes some of the best designed outdoor clothing in the industry, but they recently hired someone's brother-in-law to produce a web site which is almost unusable.
