TiVo, Aspyr announce Rendezvous products
updated 03:05 pm EST, Tue January 7, 2003
TiVo, Brother and Aspyr have announced new products that incorporate Rendezvous, Apple's wireless networking technology. "Using Rendezvous, consumer devices such as stereos and digital video recorders can automatically find and "talk" to any Macs on their local wired or wireless network, making it possible for users to stream audio from iTunes to their home stereo and display iPhotos on their TVs."
is planning on offering a premium service package that will use the Rendezvous technology to automatically see Macs connected to a network, and allow customers to listen to shared music or view photos through their TV.
Brother has announced the first Rendezvous enabled printer for workgroups; the HL-5070N Laser Printer, which is "completely configured by just turning it on."
Aspyr's new racing game, NASCAR Racing 2002 Season, "improves the multiplayer network gaming experience by making it easy for players to find and join games." Aspyr also plans on making all future network enabled games Rendezvous comptatible.

With announcements like this and others from today....it's too bad you can't do anything with a Macintosh and they don't have as many applications as the PC. Just kidding. This is cool and all my TiVo owning PC friends will be jealous.

They are most likely getting their info from the Rendezvous page. You can view it here:

"TiVo?s upcoming premium service package will use Rendezvous technology to automatically discover Macintosh computers within the home network and determine which services they provide, allowing customers to listen to their shared music or view their shared photos on their TV,? said Jim Barton, Co-founder and CTO for TiVo. ?We are excited about working with Apple on other ways Rendezvous can help TiVo Series2 DVRs connect to a Mac to deliver future services.?

TiVo charges extra 4that?

So TiVo is gonna charge a premium service fee to let your devices talk to each other? Or more appropriately, to let you show pictures and play songs on a TV? But they still won't let you stream the TV shows you recorded on the TiVo over the network and onto a Mac? Why should any of this cost extra?
I'm so glad EyeTV came out so I can cancel my TiVo subscription.

The whole point about being able to connect a TiVo to a network is if you have a video iPod and want to take recorded shows on the road: you select them on the TiVo, send them off to your iPod and catch up with the Sopranos at 30,000ft.
If I want to watch my digital photos on my TV, an $80 PhotoShow can do that. And I can play my MP3s with a $250 SLiMP3 player. Neither of them requires a service fee. Looks to me like TiVo is shying away from the one killer app, for fear of lawsuits from the movie industry. But MP3 and pictures, frankly, they must be on crack to believe anybody will pay extra for this nonsense. (and I'm a TiVo user and fanatic!)

Yeah, well if you think EyeTV is any replacement for TiVo, you really don't know what TiVo does for you...
