Iomega introduces Zip 250MB USB

updated 08:20 am EST, Wed January 3, 2001

Iomega has introduced its Zip 250MB USB Powered Drive. The unit receives both data and power through a single USB cable, eliminating the need for a power cable. The $180 drive is compatible with all Zip 250 MB and 100 MB disks. It is shipping now in North America, and will be available in Europe during the first quarter this year.

    Unless I missed something

In the article it appears as though the unit is only self powered when connected via the PCMCIA connection which seems to be PC only.

Sure seems to be the case

Doesn't seem to be USB bus powered. What a shame...I was all excited.

    It is USB powered...

MacNN simply provided the wrong link (maybe the only available at publication). For more info, check out . This is great news for any users waiting for Mercury : ) .

    Be careful....

.... if you have a PCI USB card. Many of them can't adequately power bus-powered USB peripherals. Canon's CanoScan scanners work with a few of the PCI USB cards, but Canon won't guarantee compatability. I'd imagine that the same is true for the new Zip 250.

Of course, if your Mac has built-in USB, it should be able to handle the task.

    1394 please

This is a step in the right direction, but I'd still much rather see a Zip with a 1394 interface.

    Price

It's way overpriced too. I'd rather see a 250meg usb zip drive for under £50/$80. in the same region as the usb floppies, especially as the disks are so expensive and reliability of iomega stuff isn't exactly top.

    VST has a FireWire Zip

VST has a bus-powered FireWire Zip drive. It works like a charm. And it's a lot faster than any USB drive could ever be.

    Iomega Firewire

Anyone know if Iomega's Zip Firewire adapter works with this new self powered drive? It does work with the original USB 250 but I was not sure about this new self powered one . . . l

    VST rocks!

I returned my Iomega Zip 250 USB drive and bought a Firewire VST Zip250 drive. The VST drive is Firewire bus powered and it's lots faster than the Iomega. As long as you have Firewire, no reason even glance at the Iomega drive. You can get the full height version of the VST firewire zip250 drive for 199 at VST's website.
