Apple today released a final version of , which works with the Mac OS X 10.2 Address Book and iCal to synchronize contacts and calendars between Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones, Palm OS devices, the iPod portable digital music player and other Macs using Apple's .Mac service. Users can now sync their "Jaguar" Address Book with the new .Mac Address Book. Version 1.0 also includes regularly-scheduled Mac-to-Mac synchronization, a menubar icon, faster Palm syncing, and other fixes.

same here.. sync'ed to .Mac and the addresses didn't show in the .Mac address book (yet). Maybe this morning's outage has something to do with them building this into .Mac? I'd imagine they'll fix the .Mac mail address book asap..

good updates though.. thanks apple! I would like to see them support the Nokia 6310i bluetooth phone, as I'd like to buy one.. anyone have any idea when that might happen?

i forgot to mention..

that i was watching iSync do it's thing, and it does in fact appear to be uploading all of the contacts from my address book to *somewhere* on the .Mac servers. It just looks like they don't quite have the address book icon on .Mac 'wired' to retreive the info yet. I would supsect this is fixed this afternoon sometime

Part of the reason there's not a 1-1 synch between .Mac and your Mac via iSync could be because of the current problems .Mac is experiencing.

iSync and Palm better now

I downloaded iSync and iCal; my treo calendar can now be sync'd with the iCal calendar of my choice. Very nice. Would be nice to be able to "drag and drop" to-do items to change their due dates, but it's a definite improvement over the beta Palm support.

Doesn't Work!

iSync does not work with my Franklin Planner. I put it right on my scanner and that did not work, nor did holding it up to my screen! Apple is stupid. iSync just doesn't work! I thought maybe there was something wrong with my planner so I also tried to sync a To Do list that I had jotted down on one of those mini folders and that didn't work either. iSync is iStupid!

two macs with iPod

It isn't possible to sync the Address Books on two different macs with an iPod. This is a pity, though probably deliberatly; Apple seems to reserve this feature to .mac subscribers. A shame.

Busted Conduits

Well, iSync dumped my conduits including a third-party one for my Life Balance software.

Printed iCal calendars are awful, truncated info.

iCal also doesn't sync categories with my Palm. I have to manually change to the correct category on the Palm and iCal unless I choose to import from Palm to a particular category. I doesnt' work both ways. Why would I want all my imports to be in the same category? Stupid.

iSync won't let my sync with the Palm Desktop datebook which makes a much better printed calendar and much easier to use than iCal.

to those with visors- get something else, they are crippled handhelds, so stop with the gripes.

Visor

Dude, I am the one with the Visor. I'm not griping, just had a problem during Beta. It's supposed to be fine now. And, actually, I don't know that it was my Visor so much as how my conduits were set by Entourage. Relax, I love Apple, and iSync is an amazing idea...I'm not bashing anything.

Am I the only one????

I downloaded isync and ical and they seemed to install without a glitch. However, my experience is that there is something very buggy. It takes over an hour to synch and I end up with many duplicates in ical. This is not an improvement

Are you serious? That's unbelievable to me (I haven't downloaded it yet).

Call me a whiner or what you will, but apple is majorly screwed up these days. How can make a piece of software, that is DESIGNED to sync to a Palm, yet miss something as obvious as not supporting categories?! Do apple engineers actually TEST this stuff, for god sake? That is a MAJOR useablity flaw. MAJOR. How could they overlook something that obvious? Is apple in the middle of a huge brain drain? I mean, really.

I was hoping with the new iCal/iSync, apple would finally get things at least semi-right. The original iCal was so poorly designed, both in features and usablity, that I deleted it within a week. It was THAT bad. And iSync was a beta. So I've eagerly waited for the fixes.

It's sad to me that even after 4+ months of development, apple still forgets something as basic as support for categories. Unbelievable.

sounds like something is wrong dont you think? (or don't you?) that sounds unique to your setup, mine is pretty speedy (a few minutes at most). i recommend boiling your bottom, rinse, and repeat if necessary.

Syncing to Palm

I have the same problem with 1.0 that I had with the beta. iSyn just overwrites the information on you Palm no matter which information is more current. There is no way to have the palm overwrite the computer's info which sucks.

The problem with iSync not being able to tak with Nokia phones is that Nokia does not currently support SyncML over Bluetooth. So, blame Nokia, not Apple....

Yay. So far so good.

iCal is now usable on my iBook 500. Fast enough, responsive enough, launches in a decent amount of time. Hafta go home and sync the Visor Edge, the final test. One problem - duno yet if it was theirs or mine - i believe I had renamed my categories since my original Sept sync with .mac - there should be a provision (script?) for transferring a category to another - or at least a way of editing some of the characteristics of a group of found items so thatyou can reassign the category for a number of items - in much the same way you can edit the tags in iTunes - you only apply the ones you choose to change for a group of songs or in this case to-dos and or events.

Bummer they still don't have a way to sync Palm notes. Stickies would be the natural, if only it were indexed like iOrganize or Jotz... Parts of some of these are good, but they need to adopt one and Apple-fy it.

Ida thunk they'd've pulled these out at MWSF - If this is a routine announcement a week ahead of MWSF and Steve & Steve, it makes me drool over what's on deck for Tuesday...

Rendezvous Syncing

Apple should allow calendars and address books to sync up via Rendezvous... people with offices could just plug in their computers and immediately find their company's address book and team's calendars available.

you gotta be kidding me, with the exception of the 920x communicator i can see no reason to own one of their phones, what with it's archaic OS, stilted call timers and call list options, not to mention the worst WAP available. Their new OS is so promising what with symbian and all but since they are so slow to release in the states, i forsee them losing tons o marketshare.

go with anything syncml. and bluetooth with isync is smooth as silk on my clie and my phone.

iSync and iPod, not ready

iSync is not a final product in my mind. Take for example the way it syncs calendar info with the iPod. It makes duplicates of each item! According to Apple you must first DELETE the calendar stuff from the iPod, and THEN sync with iSync. My questions is then, what does iSync actually do that I could not do myself by dragging everything myself? Lame, and it is not what a Mac user expects from an Apple product. iSync, should update things automatically, not expect the user to do more than half the job.

its true, the menubar has become apple's next little add-on b******. pretty soon there will not be any room for the freakin program menu items. i think they should have left the docklings options in but thats me. am i the only one that this bothers? hopefully konfabulator will solve all that. but till then, i shall rail against all humanity and throw my s*** on the walls.

Seems to have synced my addressbook categories and teh datebook doesn't even have categories unless they were added in OS 5.

Nokia doesn't suck

At least not my 6310i. I'm well happy with this phone and check the specs, they're impressive. Bluetooth, Java, Lithium polymer battery = 17 days standby time, robust construction. I only wish Apple will support it. Even if Apple chooses not to, I won't switch from my Nokia 6310i.

iSync update still needed

When I installed the Palm conduit for iSync, it trashed all my 3rd party conduits. I had to reinstall the Entourage-to-Handheld Sync. Everything seemed to work just fine, except for a few things.

1) iSync didn't duplicate and contacts, however, it DID duplicate information within each contact. So i had extra email addresses for each contact -- but only on the Palm, Addressbook, and iPod. No duplicates on Entourage.

2) Entries made in Entourage do not appear in my Addressbook or iPod, but they do appear on the Palm.

3) Entries made on the Palm do not appear in Entourage, but do appear on my iPod and Addressbook.

It's a bit frustrating....

Nokiia 6310i tops T68i

Well, there are basically two phones that can use Bluetooth in the US: Sony/Ericson's T68i and Nokia's 6310i. (Other choices may exist and more are coming online in 2003, but those are the Big Two.) Considering availability and market share alone, they are crazy to ignore the 6310i.

I got a Tungsten T when they recently came out and Palm manages to get it to work with the 6310i.

Before I bought a cellphone a couple of days ago, I read many user reviews of the T68i and the 6310i and the T68i was highly criticized for having a poor form factor, a poorly-designed joystick which gets caught in pockets and causes weird things to happen on the phone, and overall shoddiness of construction. By contrast, the 6310i got rave reviews in terms of form and quality.

Well, guess which one I got? The same reason I buy Macintoshes -- quality and and design -- made the 6310i a hands-down winner over the T68i, regardless of the T68i's technical prowess in the OS. Sorry.

I use Macs and I got a Tungsten T for reasons of features, style, and top-quality. They're not cheap, nor necessarily the very latest, greatest, or fastest technology-wise. Similarly, I got the 6310i (and did not get a T68i) for the same reasons.

Seeing as these reasons are the key factors in making Mac enthusiasts, Apple had best not ignore how they play out in the choice of phones people will have.

It's Free!

I think everyone's forgetting something- this is a FREE piece of software! A bonus, a gift, a 'thank you' from Apple! And I think its pretty useful too. Just because I may pop out and buy a different phone I don't expect Apple to drop everything and find a way to get my calendar onto my phone without delay or the world will grind to a halt- I think some of you guys have a slightly over inflated sense of your own importance.

And while I'm at it- how you can dis the T68i for poor build quality and a badly made joystick is utterly beyond me. I've had Nokia's for ten years now and this is the first non-Nokia phone I've had and it easily matches the build quality and ease of use of any Nokia

Isn't anyone just a 'little' nervous about uploading all their potentially sensitive & hard won contact info onto an Apple server ?

All the problems I'm hearing about remind me of the PowerTalk days... The mac is supposed to be intuitive, easy & more 'bulletproof' - auto-generating errors in my approximately 1500 contact records would not really qualify!

T68i

I bought one a few days ago, I tried a lot of phones and my main criteria were syncml over bluetooth. Finally the choice was clear: T68i. It has a great form factor, it looks sleek and works great. I've used Nokia for the last three years and have been satisfied (being lucky enough to get a model that actually worked - except for the lousy screen that needed replacement twice). Now Nokia is quickly falling behind, releasing phones that do no adhere to standards, and with buggy software and hardware. Oh, and if you are stupid enough not to put on the keyboard lock when you pocket your phone, perhaps you shouldn't own one in the first place.

Not free.

Why the h*** do people insist that iCal/et all are free? Do you guys have a friggin clue?

1) A major component of all of the iApps is dotMac. Major functionality is lost without a dotMac subscription. Which costs money.

2) Otherwise, all the new iApps require Jaguar to run. Last I checked, Jaguar costs money.

And while we're on the subject, just listen to yourselves. Your argument "well it's just freeware, you can't expect it to work right" is a load of BS. Go to versiontracker.com, and you will find a ton of really useful, fully working freeware. Programs a h*** of a lot more functional then iCal and iSync. Just because it's freeware, doesn't mean it's suddenly excluded from judgement.

If apple is going to waste time, money, and resources to create these iApps, the least they can do is put out programs that work correctly. Some of the design flaws in both of the new programs are STILL apparent, and that's after apple's had six months to work on them. Sad. Unexceptable.

If any other company made this freewhere other then apple, people wouldn't care at all. If it didn't work, it would be dumped in a second. But people WANT it to work, just because it's apple.

SyncML

iSync only works with Bluetooth-enabled phones that uses SyncML. I don't think the Nokia 6310i has this. Both the T68i and T39 support SyncML.

You have a valid point (except for .Mac, only a few features require it), however, some people are expecting Apple to provide syncing capability with every phone ever made, are expecting iCal to be the most perfect PIM in existence, and are complaining that the buttons aren't pretty enough. These are things that can politely be suggested in Apple's feedback page, not whined about immaturely in a public forum.

I don't think anybody is expecting iSync to work with "every phone ever made." But the fact is, Sony Ericsson has about 5% market share. Nokia has about 38%. I seriously hope Apple is talking with Nokia to get some synergy in place.

And Nokia has said that it future devices based on Symbian OS (Series 60, etc.) will have SyncML over OBEX, so there's no reason why Apple shouldn't be working with them.

Nokia tri-band w/ SyncML

The Nokia 7650 does have SyncML as an add-on on the bundled CDRom. I haven't tried it yet, so don't know if it works over bluetooth, IR or over IP (to a server).

BTW, the Nokia 3650 (essentially an enhanced tri-band 7650) should be available in Feb from what I've heard. I'm in the UK, but a colleague in the US does have a pre-production 3650 which does work on Sprint. I'll have a play with the SyncML app on the 7650 later tonight and post news on success/failure.

not that it's a great phone or anything but i have a motorola v120e and i just ordered smith-micro quicklink mobile 2.0 (just released on jan 2) it allows a new generation of phones to act as modems, connecting macs to the internet in mac os x. since a usb cable will be supplied with the software and will be able to talk to the mac, i dont see why isync should not be able to synchronize the info from the phone over the same cable. this would open the floodgates for all sorts of cell phone users to have a real standardized set of contacts (even us poor ones who cant afford the fancy bluetooth phones).

iSYNC SUCKS!!!

isync and its partner in crime, iCal 1.0.1 wipe out all the info in my m125 datebook. Apple continues to produce c*** for software. syncing now only deletes!!!

The iSync beta was working fine - what the h*** did they do????

new iSync is a pain

Got the new iSync (had deleted the beta last week, because it took too long and consistently messed up stuff on my extinct Visor Neo). Well, the new iSync was (1) on its way to a 20-25 minute USB sync, and (2) wanted to add 800 plus contacts to my address book when I only have 138! So, I deleted the iSync conduit, put the Palm Desktop 4 conduits back in and voila! - a 1.5 MINUTE USB hotsync - the way it is supposed to work!!! h***, I'm not even going to use this crappy software with my brand new iPod - I'll drag and drop contacts and calendars. iSync is one piece of software (if you can call it software) that I won't be baited into using. Very Microsoft like, Apple.
