Apple updates iCal 1.01 calendar app

Apple today released , an update to its innovative calendar program that lets users manage multiple calendars and share them over the Internet. Version 1.01 provides a number of performance and stability enhancements, and improved support for importing vCal and Entourage information. The company said that since the introduction of iCal in September 2002, more than 1 million copies of iCal have been distributed and more than 200,000 calendars have been published online.

Performance Enhancements?

I've yet to try iSync, but iCal 1.0.1 is just as sluggish and "snap-less". Grrrr.....

Service outage

I'd be more impressed if Apple could keep their basic services, like .mac, running without a hitch. I don't know about anyone else, but I haven't been able to get at my email in over a day.

I can't seem to d/l either this or the iSync update -- the form keeps telling me that I need to provide a valid email address, despite my having done so. Grrr.

FANTASTIC!!!

Just downloaded and installed iCal 1.01. This update is fantastic. It now remembers the position of my calendar, feels snappier, and starts up a little faster. I'm pleased with the current update and look forward to the next ones.

iSluggish?

Hmm,
I just loaded these guys and they seem snappier to me.
Switching from day to week to month happens quicker,
though I don't know yet if it will degradate in time.
i sync worked better-faster-as well. I wonder if
response time has to do with available bandwidth.
Also, switching various subscriptions appears
to be faster.
I'm on an imac 450 with a cable connection.

So far, for me, so good...

Interesting

Interesting that they would release this (and iSync 1.0) ahead of MacWorld instead of releasing it the day of, which they've normally done in the past w/ other iApps. Hmmm...wonder if they realized Jobs wouldn't have enough time in the keynote to address these, so they went ahead and released them early.

Dock icon updates

I set my clock ahead, and the Dock icon for iCal now updates itself at midnight if iCal is open. Finally!

In point of fact, Apple *frequently* updates minor versions (and sometimes major versions) of their apps right before MacWorld. This isn't something "new". It probably means Jobs will go over them at MacWorld, but will be able to say "we've gotten x million downloads of iSync since we went final only 5 days ago". MacWorld is generally reserved for the more, shall we say, impressive, updates. (But even QT 6 was released right before MWNY)

Steve's Schedule

I just noticed that on the iCal page that it looks like somebody posted Steve's schedule. If you look at the iCal application picture very carefully, you can make out the events of "Keynote Rehearsal", "Dinner with Woz" and "Breakfast with Senator..." and so on. I'm wondering if this is Steve's calendar with some extra events thown in to make it look more mundane.

iCal always updated the dock for me, so I never had this problem (maybe its because my ancient machine doesn't sleep, so its able to update it at the stroke of midnight?). One question, though, will the dock icon show the correct date when iCal isn't technically running, rather than the mundane July 17th (or the almost as mundane "shows the date of the last time it was open" if you don't reboot/shutdown often)?

Yipee...

iCal is 10x more usable on my ancient 400mhz AGP PowerMac. I haven't used it since the first week it came out. Now I can...

iSync...don't know yet....

.Mac....Can't believe we're still hearing whining about it. Mine has never been out to my knowledge...my .mac email is my main email address. Sorry, but I don't think it's .Mac. Another problem apparantly.

iCal

iCal is not innovative, it's just a good calendar, it use s an open standard (.ics), you can subscribe to online calendars, and the interface is good...

The great thing is iSync, so you only have to mess with one calendar for everything (Palm, Phone, iPod...) !

I thought iSync would allow you to keep calendars on different computers the same. I have tried everything I can think of or have read. As far as I can tell. this does not work. I am open to suggestions.

iCal is definitely a little snappier. The improvemnt I like the most? You can now close the iCal window and the app still runs so that you can get alarms and such. yea!

Upgrade iSync first!

If you upgrade iCal before you upgrade iSync (synching everything first) you are stuck as you are supposed to synch all but iSync Public Beta won't work with iCal 1.0.1

You need .Mac to sync between Macs. Turn on the .Mac component in iSync and Sync to your .Mac account. Then go to your other computer and sync from your .Mac account.

Crappy downloads

I tried downloading with IE and got a .hqx file that my Stuffit Expander wouldn't open. Why is Apple posting .hqx files at all?

I then used Chimera to download it and got iCal.dmg.bin. Stuffit Expander decoded the .bin just fine, but the resulting file wasn't a .dmg at all... it was a .pkg file. Come on, Apple... get your s*** together.

iSync, on the other hand downloaded just fine as a .dmg.

Revised buttons

Looks like Apple has decided to modify the colorful buttons in its iApps not only iChat. Both iSync and iCal include the new sunken and shadowless gel buttons.

On a side note: iCal seems to have much better response time on my tibook 667. Although I just tried refreshing a couple calendars I've subscribed to and get a network error, I'll have to try it again when I get off the company network.

The new sunken buttons...

are a result of MacOS X 10.2.3. They should not have anything to do with the application itself (except for apps like iTunes & Quicktime Player which do the metal appearance themselves).

New iCal crashes

iCal has always worked fine for me other than being a tad sluggish. But I just installed the new version and it still seems sluggish and now crashes on me after about 2 minutes of being open.
I'm running 10.2.3 on an iMac 600Mhz/256k.
Has it crashed for anyone else?

Because we have no figgin clue how to design UI interfaces. Therefore, we have to periodically change stupid little things at random. Our marketing department tells us to do it. So all you idiots who drool over every little thing we do will have something new to complain about, I mean discuss. Because you know, it will be another year before we're able to release the G5s, which is what people actually care about.

It just distinguishes the iApps more from the usual window bars...

wasn't it also rumored that a new iDevice would have similar buttons on it? and that the iApps would mimic that device with the recessed button look?

wow - i just installed iCal 1.0.1.... before installing it, iCal 1.0 took 40 bounces to open up (on a g4 733)... now it takes 4!!! I am so excited. This is actually usable now!

On the right track...

iCal is now usable on my iBook 500. Fast enough, responsive enough, launches in a decent amount of time. Hafta go home and sync the Visor Edge, the final test. One problem - duno yet if it was theirs or mine - i believe I had renamed my categories since my original Sept sync with .mac - there should be a provision (script?) for transferring a category to another - or at least a way of editing some of the characteristics of a group of found items so thatyou can reassign the category for a number of items - in much the same way you can edit the tags in iTunes - you only apply the ones you choose to change for a group of songs or in this case to-dos and or events.

Bummer they still don't have a way to sync Palm notes. Stickies would be the natural, if only it were indexed like iOrganize or Jotz... Parts of some of these are good, but they need to adopt one and Apple-fy it.

Ida thunk they'd've pulled these out at MWSF - If this is a routine announcement a week ahead of MWSF and Steve & Steve, it makes me drool over what's on deck for Tuesday...

iCal works ok in Chicago

Hi,

Just a note to let you all know that I live in Chicago and have had perfect success installing the new version of iCal. However, I still give it a low rating as a sign of solidarity toward my Mac using brothers way out west (and south).

The god damn buttons

are not even friggin round anymore. I'm sorry, but I'm going to bring this S*** up, because they look f**king stupid now. Look. The bottoms of the buttons are skewed to the right. So the buttons are no longer round. It's obvious what they did- they removed the drop shadow and put a small little indent around the buttons. But the buttons THEMSELVES were never completely circular. They just LOOK circular in the original design, because the drop shadow on the lower right provided the extra roundness. Compare the two, and you'll see what I mean.

That's it, I'm done. Apple can't design buttons. I'm switching to windows.

Probably because neither was released with the OS back in August, so it was felt that they shouldn't be listed on the update list (which makes sense).

No Notes/Memos

I'm horrified that iCal still has no support for Notes/Memos (such as those originating from a Palm device). It's such an obvious feature -- I mean, it supports To-Dos/Tasks, right? Frustrating.

It messed me up

Just installed both iSync & Cal and when I updated it merged all my curent calendars into one huge set of unfiled things. all my calendar setting were lost.

Way to go Apple.
