Apple suffers another .Mac service outage

Apple has posted a note about another , which has been noted by many MacNN readers: "Access to the .Mac Web site (www.mac.com) is severly limited at this time due to an unexpected outage. Apple engineers have been working on the outage since 1:00 PM PST on 1/1/2003, and we will update this status notice as soon as possible."

"Although no user data will be lost, users will not be able to reliably access Webmail, edit HomePage sites, or access paid, members-only support until the issue is resolved. However, iDisk, client E-mail, and other services not directly dependent on the Mac.com Web site should not be affected. We apologize for any inconvenience."

    No problems before

Funny, I didn't have any problems getting mail until I read the article! I literally got email until I came to MacNN and saw the article!

.Mac doesn't suck, it's great. I'm so glad I have it. Occasional outages are rare. Other email services aren't always up, either, paid or free.

    Some people had trouble

sending e-mail through smtp.mac.com. Though I've had no trouble receiving it, or using the webmail. It seems to be localized to just some accounts.

    Re: Some people

Actually, I thought it sent through mail.mac.com. But I know what you mean.

I didn't notice a problem either, not that I spent New Year's Day in front of my computer waiting for my first piece of spam for the new year (woo!hoo! I'm going to be rich with the help of the soon-to-be-former secretary of state of Nigeria!)

I agree. I'll bet there are many people that just hang on their inbox all day long, and even if it fails to check even once in an hour, they scream bloody murder.

Who cares? It's a personal email account, no more or less reliable than any other ISP.

BTW, I had no problems checking my email.

Actually you did not know what he meant. The poster was right in saying smtp.mac.com and not mail.mac.com - which is the same setting I use. I guess you need to know more about something before you jump on someone.

    I bet it's Address Book

The iSync (Final 1.0) web site says your .mac address book online is now syncing with Address Book, I bet this has caused some sort of problem.

    .Mac is more than e-mail

.mac is more than just e-mail, folks. E-mail doesn't seem to be included with this outage, but other facets of .mac have been down for a few days. Homepage was hardly working at all, leaving many people unable to view the iPhoto webpages that they had created. File shaing pages were out, as well... I'm not sure what else went down...

Actually I'm pretty sure I use mail.mac.com for incomping and outgoing mail. And I don't know where you're from, but I'd really like to know how "Actually, I thought it sent through mail.mac.com. But I know what you mean." could be construed as 'jumping on someone'. The way you make it sound, I wrote something like "Hey you idiot! Its mail.mac.com, not smtp.mac.com! I can't believe the stupidity of you people! Morons, all of you!". Hmmm, maybe that's what I meant by the "Actually" part of the sentence.
