Apple releases Mac OS X 10.2.3 via SUCP

Apple today released via the Software Update control panel as well as posted the downloads online: "The 10.2.3 Update delivers enhanced functionality and improved reliability for the following applications, utilities, and technologies: AppleScript, Classic compatibility, Disk Copy, Disk Utility, Image Capture, Mail, OpenGL, Print Center, and Rendezvous. It provides audio, disc recording, graphics, printing improvements, as well as AFP and WebDAV networking improvements. The update also provides updated security services and includes the latest Security Updates." [update: links included to full documentation]

No Pain = Gain in SW

So far, no perceptable difference (other than the standard placebo "snappiness") after installing 10.2.3 on a DP1000, but then the much-hated 10.2.2 seemed to work ok for me too. Too early to say much more than that it's not an obvious disaster, though.

Update 10,2,3

A 51 MB update is rediculous. I don't know what the h*** Apple people are smoking but they need to come down to earth. Not everyone has a T1 line to download the update. It ain't free if you have to spend hours to download over 56K. Come on Apple there simply can't be that much change to warrent 51MB of download. Snappy only takes up about 1MB and that may be a stretch.

snow screen saver hiccups

i read in the apple doc that there was an improvement / fix with screensavers and video acceleration of some sort. after the update my screen saver moves for three seconds, then pauses briefly and repeats. no smooth movements like before.

Ooh...

Now that the docs are up, I tested and found you can now type the first letter(s) of a folder name in a save dialogue and have the selection point jump to that spot! Finally! (Actually, it might have been in an earlier update, but I don't think it worked...) Too bad you can drop down a folder level by hitting return (have to go all the way over to the arrow keys), but this is half way to fixing what was honestly the *only* thing that I continue to miss from Classic.

Oh, and from the notes, it looks like the issue on X Server where files saved to a server don't inherit the parent folder's permissions can now be optionally changed. Rejoice, those who want to file share with an XServe.

why it is big

It is big because it has an OpenGL 1.4 implementation in it. While for Windows it is a separate download from a software update, they are also pushing DirectX instead. MacOS X relies on OpenGL for many graphical nicities, so it's part of the OS, so to speak.

Of course, Windows would support their 'superior' proprietary DirectX over OpenGL.

As for the size, it's a 'free' download and if you REALLY want, you can push for a smaller download and complain about the fixes and improvements that aren't there that you really really needed.

Breaks my mouse!

10.2.3 update stopped my Logitech wireless, optical mouse from working. I had to uninstall the LLC, Logitech Control Center, ie the drivers. Restart. Install the LLC. Restart. Then order was restored, all was well with the universe, and my mouse worked again. Though my closet was a mess from looking for my wired mouse. I'll bet this would apply to all Logitech devices since they all use the same LCC. I assume many will experience this issue, so here is what worked for me. I hope future updates will not break my mouse driver, though I will be more skeptical.

10.2.2 and 10.2.3 Issue

Since updating to 10.2.2, I often have a problem with commands in the Apple Menu not working. None of them, in fact. This means I can't Shut Down, Restart, or put the computer to Sleep. Selecting any of these commands gives me an eternal spinning lozenge. Someone on Apple's discussion forum recommended deleting the Finder preferences file from my Library and relaunching the Finder. This worked, but that file now REPEATEDLY gets corrupted. I was hoping to see an end to this in 10.2.3, but instead the problem came up immediately. Worse, the old fix isn't working because control-clicking on the Finder icon in the dock no longer brings up the Relaunch option. After posting this, I'm going to hit that little button on the front of my tower; it appears to be my only escape route -- short of pulling the plug.

Jaguar and it's updates have given me far more grief than any prior release of OS X. Another user opened my eyes to a slew of cache-cleaning utilities for Jaguar. I may experiment with these before long, but why are they even necessary? I want Apple to clean my caches.

Mail.app SSL screwed up?

My SSL connections in Mail.app 1.2.3 (what came with 10.2.3) for SMTP seem totally screwed now. If I disable SSL, the SMTP sessions work fine. Anyone else seen this?

Always Crashes

After every update, on first boot and login, the finder quits and restarts, infinitely. I am forced to open the terminal, and do a %sudo reboot. Such is life, and i'm not complaining...happen to anyone else?

The 10.2.3 update specifically addresses the compatibility issue between the HP Communications driver and the USB drivers that was present with the 10.2.2 update. If you are running an OfficeJet, PSC, or Photosmart, it is a must have upgrade.

Classic redraw problems

I work a lot in Classic. After upgrading to 10.2.3 I see a problem with windows leaving border remnants. Not sure exactly when it happens but it looks like an intermittent problem that occurs when a window is moved.

I can't believe someone actually complained that Apple did TOO much work, that they updated TOO many packages, that they released a 51MB update for free not all that long after the last update.

Some mac users are freaking unbelievable. God forbid Apple stays on top of things and generates 50MB of new/revised code in a couple months [since 10.2.2].

ATI Rage 128 users ...

I'd like to publically thank Apple for improving the video performance of OS X on machines with these cards. It ain't Quartz Extreme or anything, but it's a help and for millions (literally) of people who own at least one mac that has a Rage 128 (iMac, iBook users), a blessing.

Woot!

Not only is stuff faster, but I can finally use my arrow and return keys in dialogs such as force quit! I lost that ability in Jaguar. And yes, the window buttons in iChat do seem different...more set into the brushed metal.

Has anyone else had a problem where clicking on the menubar to open a menu in Mail.app causes a 5-10 second beachball cursor before the menu drops? (Happens only the first time you click on the menu, until you quit and restart Mail.app.) If so, does 10.2.3 fix it?

I like it so far, I like the ability to use the arrow keys to move around in dialog boxes and in the finder, and going to a folder by typing its first letter.

I'm hopeful that the usb audio stutters are a thing of the past.

Remember to run "repair permissions" in the Disk Utility, mine showed many errors. I don't know what they would have done, as I ran the repair at the first restart.

wierdness fix

here's an important tip that many people seem to forget, especially since updating to OS X....

zap the PRAM if you are having wierd, strange behavior.

It was recommended you zap the PRAM at least once a month in OS 7, 8, and 9. after updating, zap your PRAM. Just restart, and hold down command-option-p-r and keep it held down for THREE startup chimes, then release and let the computer start up. If that doesn't fix the problem, then reset openfirmware. restart the computer and hold down command-option-o-f when you get the white screen, type reset-all and press return. then type mac-start ( i think mac-start. OF will tell you the correct command right above the '>' character)

and one last thing. Run disk utility and check/repair user permissions on your root partition.

you would be amazed at how much better a sluggish computer runs after doing any one of those three steps.

I think they could be windows users in fact... Who in his right mind would complain about improving his system. If this guy IS a Mac user : go to an Apple store, there are chances they will agree to burn you the update if asked nicely.

For me : no gliches and I ran XBench on my PB G4 and gained half a point. It should mean a... 1% improvement. It is a comment for the SNAPIER kind of guys ;)

It is always good news to know we are up to date with drivers and security patches.

After 10.2.4, we should begin to hear about 10.3, no ?

iDisk sucks

iDisk, quite frankly, sucks because it is very unreliable:

If there's a problem in displaying the contents of one's iDisk (happens frequently, for no reason), the spinning cursor is displayed: the Finder freezes and a restart is necessary (a freeze occurs again during shutdown). That this can bring even Jaguar 10.2.3 to its knees is inexplicable.

One thing that should be included in such a statement is HOW the iDisk mechanism is being used and it's connection method. If it's used on a dial-up, all bets are off since dial-ups are notoriously noisy and UNRELIABLE for most parts of the country. Unless you live near a telco switch, keep this in mind as the speed/accuracy will drop off with increasing distance and Apple's modems have never been that great with error correction.

Now, on the other hand, if you have a broadband connection, iDisk works fairly well - I know I use mine nearly everyday at work for a local school system and at home via cable modem (T1 at work).

I've read most of the posts in this thread and can truthfully say I've not seen the problems described by other posters.

PowerBook G4 500MHz - 784MB RAM - Mac OS X 10.2.2 (just upgraded to 10.2.3 as of this morning)

I FEEL CHEATED... I downloaded it and had it installed in 5 minutes. Man, I wish I had a lousy modem so I felt like I got something. This went to fast. Maybe next time Apple can make the download a little bigger so it actually takes up some time to do... sigh.. I guess I'll wait for 10.2.4 and hope..

Or you could just restart the finder instead of the whole computer. Works for me, although my iDisk works most of the time.

I know it's not much consolation but your problems are not typical. My guess is that you have running some 3rd-party system-modifying program, that is doing the corrupting. Norton or some other haxie.

Here's a strange one... after upgrading to 10.2.3 and restarting, no output devices are found in the Sound control panel on my iBook. Not the speakers, not the headphone port. Likewise, there are no input devices found (the internal microphone should show up). The laptop is completely deaf and mute now.

Since Jaguar whem I connect my 'Generic USB FDD (UD-376)" floppy drive I get messages popping op in window after window telling me the I placed a 'disc containing volumes that cannot be read in Mac OS X' (translated from Dutch...). I have to click 'Ignore', 'Initilalize' or 'remove media', but the same windows keep popping up, leaving this USB floppy disk drive unusable. 10.2.3 doesn/'t solve this problem....

AHHH!

Fix the inset buttons on the brushed metal finish, it looks terrible. They are not even spaced correctly!

This looks terrible, I won't have this uglyness on my nice TiBook. I'm going to have to stop using iChat and iSync it's so bad. Luckly for some reason iTunes hasn't changed. And IT BETTER NOT!

x is a flop!

This is ridiculous. We�ve paid for the X public beta, X & the so-called Jaguar (even the Ford owned automobile lives up to the name somewhat better) . Lets face it, this operating system is a buggy flop, & us mugs are paying Apple to beta test it! And I�ve used Mac as platform of choice since 1988, upgrading the hardware about every 2 years & software continually.

I still use my OS9 partition 95% of the time. The graphics are better & clearer (X is just too flashy) for just about every task (particularly WP, DTP). It�s easier to get your head around 9 when looking around the system (which is what I thought the MacOs was supposed to be all about - computers for non-geeks).

I�ve tried to get on with X. But the last straw came tonight. Was sent a VCD - played ok in 9.2.2 with Quicktime player, and XP played it flawlessly. But X wouldn�t even recognise it (latest Quicktime Pro) - totally pathetic!

I was recently given a new XP loaded Sony laptop for work - and it flies! Quark & Photoshop are much faster than on the TiBook. So what are we paying for, Apple?

I just applied the 10.2.3 update - God knows what�s not working now!

And please refrain from making abusive comments - like a squabble in some small cult - it really is sad how agressive some people get on these sites when faced with the truth.

strange mac users?

For most of us modem users it takes a long time to download a 51mb file and it isn't worth the effort.
What most would suggest is that apple divide the update out to 5-10mb each so that you could come back to the update if you have to go to work or watch tv. That way
it would be less hassle and it could all compile into a package.
It's the convenience that we expect since i know everyone doesn't have a DSL/broadband connection.

Boy am a Glad I didnt see these comments previously or else I would not have upgraded (yes, I too had to suffer the modem connection). No problems at all so far (the OS is fine, apps are fine, skin complection is fine, my house is still standing). My G4 is still chugging away nicely.

On a different note its funny that a 733 mhz machine can still make owners of a 2.7ghz machine green with envy...

Props to Apple

Very nice update. My apps open more quickly, mail and other apps are much more stable. Some of you are correct in that there is no new updates to the iApps, although 51 meg of stability ROCKS. I hope this prepares us all for some cooler stuff to come. THANKS APPLE!

The reason your VCD works on 9.2.2 is likely because it uses a Codec that is not available for Quicktime for OSX. Same reason .AVI on 9.2.2 works and not on OSX. Not too sure why Apple chooses not to support .AVI in Quicktime. Wouldn't doubt if it was due to some Microsoft proprietary information they refuse to give out to Apple.
On the Windoze side of things, somewhere in between scanning for 20,000 viruses and installing daily security updates I'm sure you will have time to install some usable software.
Every time I see a Virus alert for some mail attachment thing, I laugh my butt off and love my Mac more and more.
