Yamaha today introduced its internal ($130) for Apple's Power Mac G4 towers (mirrored drive doors). The drive features 8MB of memory and burn speeds of up to 44x (CD-R). It features the DiscT@2 (Tattoo) Laser Labeling System, which allows graphics and text to be burnt onto CD-R discs, eliminating the need for labels and "is also the first CD recorder ever to offer 24X CD-RW ReWriting. Mt. Rainier support adds true drag-and-drop CD rewriting and on-the-fly formatting to CD-RW creation." Yamaha also offers two sleek Mac compatible external models: FireWire/USB (CRW-F1ZDX, $280); and SCSI (CRW-F1ZSX, $330). The Mac version includes Roxio's Toast 5 Lite, Adobe Photoshop LE, and MusicMatch Jukebox. The company says the drives will be carried nationwide by retailers and distributors, including the Apple Store.

    This is much cooler...

...than having a combo drive in the second drive bay. I'm ordering one!

    Eject Button

I've always been curious since the eject buttonless Quicksilvers came out and now especially with the windtunnel G4's since you can definitely have 2 optical drives in there (I didn't know you couldn't in the Quicksilvers). Anyways, how does it work when you have two optical drives and only one keyboard eject button? I assume there's some provision for it, I just always wondered what it was

    Re eject

when ever i have a my fire wire cd-r drive pluged in to my comp it works like this
press the button, and it will pop open any drive that has nothing in it... if neither of them have anything in them it will pop them both open... if they are both full they both open. REALLY WEIRD!

    mac compat.

I am surprised to see that Yamaha's IDE units are now rated as Mac Compatible. And does the discTa2 thing work on Macs too? Yamaha Canada's site gives the impression this is really just PC stuff.

    IDE

THe unit should work in both mac and pc's, if both systems are adhering to the IDE standards, then there really is no reason why one would have to be made diffferent than the other to work on the mac.

    btw...

at last check, the "official" firewire crw-fw and the one I made, both are not recognized by iTunes.

    Get with the program, Apple!

I have to get the tattoo software for OS X. The one bundled Toast Lite is POS; very little instructions.
I've never actually gotten the thing to work yet.

    2nd Bay

Has anyone run across any articles discussing the possibility of using the 2nd bay in the Quicksilver G4 for something other than a zip drive? The bay is just sitting there collecting dust 'cause I have no plans on adding a zip drive.

    First 24x RW????

I have a Lite-On drive that is 24x CD-RW so Yamaha is not the first out with this speed.

    2nd Bay

I believe if you hit command-eject, the 2nd optical bay will open/close. As for the internal Zip, that's not the only option. In the MDD models, the bay is actually 5.25 inch, so there is room for another optical drive. This is a good thing since many people are getting the SuperDrive-equipped model, and they only burn CD's at 8X (I remember when that used to be fast!)
