Echo Digital Audio has unveiled the , a 24bit/96kHz audio output card for laptops. In addition to providing audio output to an amplifier or amplified speakers, it also includes a headphone amplifier for powering up to two high-end “studio monitor” headphone sets. The $100 device is compatible with Mac OS X.

    Cool!

    It looks like a cool product for audiophiles and audio hobbyists (I'm sure the "real" pros would want more), or if you travel a lot as a couple. $100 is not too bad, I suppose.

    Now if only there were a $100 S/PDIF card for the Mac...

    But is it really needed?

    Do the Powerbooks really need this though? I have a G3/500 here running Reason, and shortly emagic Gold. I've never had problems with hiss, pop or hum...the unit's appealing in terms of what it does, but I'm not sure how much it would improve Powerbook audio.
