Apple sues for leaked Power Mac details

Apple is who allegedly posted drawings on the Internet of some of the company's computers before the products were formally announced. The company filed a civil complaint against Jose Lopez in California Superior Court, alleging that he "misappropriated trade secrets and breached his contract by posting schematic drawings, images and engineering details of the company's new Power Mac G4 computers on the Internet in July, several weeks before the product was formally announced in August," according to Dow Jones Business News

was this the guy who leaked the windtunnel pdf's and pics that made their way around the rumor sites? seems like the right dates.. I, for one, like to see the new stuff before apple "formally" presents it.. I know apple doesn't want me to so they can try to s**** me over and have me buy machines right before new one's come out.. but they're a business..

Trade secrets?

Is it just me or does it seem that Apple has fewer and fewer trade secrets to protect? Once a year they add 100mhz (sometimes less) to each product and touch-up the aesthetics a little. Or maybe they want to protect the fact that they are not planning something new? Dunno ...

BTW - I like the profiling post. Funny.

Prove it WAS a trade secr

A key to the defense should be proof that the leaked information actually was a "trade secret" and not just a "lackluster update to a badly assembled noise machine."

As a long-time Apple follower, I'm disgusted that they consider such a bland unappealing product to be even worth the moniker of "new."

If anything, the leaked rumors made the upcoming machine seem a lot more exciting that it really was - "it has DDR memory and extra drive bays, it must be good!"

c*** it was - the thing is a badly designed noise machine that isn't worth half its overpriced price tag.

So it's not a huge deal--that's not the point at all. And the fact that I love rumor sites and leaks as much as the next guy isn't either.

Apple had something they wanted to keep under wraps--doesn't matter if it's a 100Mhz speedbump or the flat panel iMac--and they have their employees sign a contract that says they'll keep quiet. Same as the Survivor people not mentioning who won, although obviously not as damaging to the business endeavor.

If somebody spills, Apple is in a position where they almost have to do something to punish the guy--otherwise, why would any other employee worry about doing the same with a more important secret? So, they sue. Ugly, and I'd rather not see it, but I'd probably do the same thing in their position, even if they stand nothing to gain (money, I guess) from it.

Oh, and although the racial comment is funny, and I noticed the same thing, it's probably because half the population of California is hispanic--it's just statistics at work.

Or how about this: Apple is working on a new hardware/software product, stupid idiots under NDA release info on it, due to time limitations, unforseen circumstances or incompatibilities, cost, or something, Apple either doesn't release the product, or removes certain features from the product. Now, no one is talking about the product per se, just what's NOT in it. [LIke when Jag was released, people pointed out what was reported but not included (labels, minimize in place, that kind of thing). ] Or, worse, since the product was already talked up on the rumor circuit (and then picked up by some other pubs), there's less buzz when its released, and thus less press (i.e., less free publicity, which all companies live on). All of a sudden, what's supposed to be the hot product becomes, at the very best, "Mmm, just what I was expecting", to, at worst, "Is that all there is?". That's when the MacNN posters get going and start whining about another lame product announcement, and where's the innovation, what happened to the good old days when a MacWorld expo brought the suprising 'one more things...".

Yeah, there's no reason for Apple to go after these people...

What secrets?

Apple uses 4 years old technology in it's machines. If we were in 1999, then it would have been a secret, but today, there's nothing secret in mirror doors and a 167 mhz bus.
