    Yawn

How many machines did they sell? Apple can talk about foot traffic all they want, but what did we expect for mall-based stores during the busiest shopping weekend in US history?

How much money did they make?

    You can't track sales...

Store sales wouldn't be a fair estimate of the success of the stores as many people go to check the systems out at their local store and buy their system online. That's what I did. You must also consider the business that MacZone and Mac Connection get from these stores.

I think it's important that these stores are quasi-profitable, but at the same time, they are a marketing hit.

What Window$® person is going to switch to a Mac without having seen what they can do?

    Customer Awareness

The stores are all about customer awareness. It doesn't matter how much they sell or the fact that they are doing WAY better than any Gateway chain could ever dream.

What matters is, 365,000 people got to see the best computers in the world, the best MP3 player and a slew of Mac software!

You'll note that other companies in the article talk about sales, not foot traffic. I'm sure we can expect Dell to post record sales yet again this quarter. People can look at Apple's PCs all they want, but if they aren't buying them, it doesn't matter.

    Examples:

Wal-Mart - set a single-day company sales record during the day-after-Thanksgiving shopping spree, taking in $1.43 billion nationally.

J.C. Penney - said its weekend sales were "significantly" above last year.

Hewlett-Packard - more than exceeded expectations, particularly in the photosmart and all-in-one product categories ... Sales in both categories are up 100% to 200% from last Thanksgiving.

Dell - based on preliminary results, the company too had a good holiday weekend. Dell is expected to issue its sales numbers sometime Tuesday.

And then there's Apple. The Apple Stores had a lot of foot traffic. Wow. Foot traffic. At a mall. During Christmas. Imagine that.

If people were buying, Apple would have said so. I predict that this quarter is going to be a disaster for the company.

    Re: Baloney

You are an ignorant troll. People buy online because they can get goodies like free RAM or a printer. Stuff they often don't get at the Apple store.

But I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Mark Twain once said something to the effect that 'Prophecy is a very tricky thing, particularly with respect to predicting the future.'

    Case in point

I was part of the foot traffic - the Apple Store in Atlanta was the busiest store in the mall. I walked away with an ipod, laptop case, and software - but I went home to order my Powerbook through MacMall because I got more freebies.

Apple won't be hurting this Christmas if last weekend is any indication.
