Diablo II Battle.net Hacked; Blizzard Remedy

updated 02:03 pm EST, Tue January 2, 2001

Blizzard Entertainment ackowledged yesterday that a problem on the Diablo II Battle.net servers allowed some Hardcore characters to be killed or stripped of many items. To remedy the situation, the company will be reviving all Hardcore characters on Monday, January 8th who died between December 19th and January 1st. The characters will be revived to their full state as they were on December 19th. In addition, the company will soon be announcing a way for any player to flag their character to be returned to their December 19 state if they believe that they have lost items or otherwise been adversely affected by the problem. A contributor at Slashdot notes that the problem stemmed from hackers that found a way to log in as any character.

    "Security"

I'm not sure that I would TOTALLY trust Blizzard after this little mishap. It was bound to happen, and appearently the people that did it were close to the game (knew what to go for). I wouldn't expect this to happen on some other games, too. Maybe soon!

    Too much credit

Anyone with a packet sniffer, familiarity with TCP networking and a lot of free time can "hack" into a server provided their are flaws in its design and/or implementation of various features.

It seems that the problem started on or around the 19th which is also when many US schools went on Christmas vacation...

Idle hands are the devil's workshop...

There are a lot of kids with high-powered computer hooked up 24/7 to Cable modems and access to virtually any piece of software you could want or need (plus lots of documentation on how to use them). I am not surprised when this happens, I know its simply a matter of when - not if it will happen.
