Apple reduces G4, Cube, PowerBook prices

With the myriad of Apple rebates having expired yesterday at midnight, the Apple Store has revised its prices for the systems affected by those rebates: the Power Mac G4, G4 Cube, and PowerBook G3. Pricing for the PowerMac G4 is now $1,300 for the 400 MHz, $2000 for the MP 450 MHz, and $2500 for the MP 500 MHz. The 450 MHz G4 Cube now starts at $1500, while the 500 MHz model maintains its $2300 price tag (pricing for the high-end Cube remains unchanged as well, at $2800). Only two PowerBook configurations are now available, the 400 MHz and 500 MHz, for $2000 and $2200, respectively. Readers note that the build-to-order (BTO) option is not available for these configurations. [updated]

No BTO options ...

... It looks like the configurations are fixed - you have to go with thier set packages. If they had BTO with these prices, I might have jumped =)

I assume they are prepping the BTO pipeline for new models to be released at MWSF. It's going to be an interesting show ...

BTO still there

Apple build to order rocks with a lot more new options.
For instance, if I do the following:
1. visit http://store.apple.com/
2. Click on the iMac
3. Pick an iMac DV+ Sage
4. Pick 64MB of RAM (I can get more RAM for a lower price elsewhere at http://www.ramseeker.com through Crucial, Techworks, Kingston, The Chip Merchant, Memory Solutions, and Macsolutions)

Apple's in trouble if this represents fire-sale pricing. It's still well above the Wintel spawn -- in this morning's local paper I see ads for HP notebooks sporting 700 MHz P3's, 128M RAM, 10G HD, DVD, 14" active matrix display etc -- for under $1900. Selling 400 MHz Powerbooks for $2000 is not gonna cut it, except for Mac folks, and it will only cannibalize potential sales of G4 Powerbooks. For the new G4 Powerbooks to be selling to anyone outside the dwindling pool of Macophiles, they'd better be priced at UNDER $2000.

$2000 notebook

Apple's $2000 notebook includes, 10/100 ethernet for cable and DSL. It includes SVGA, 2 Firewire ports, 2 USB ports, S-Video out, a full sized keyboard with curved arm rests that are very ergonomic, a trackpad positioned within easy reach of the thumbs, DVD, 5 hours of battery with an option of 10 hours for additional $100. There is a lot more to the Powerbook than meets the eye.

To the guy who posted all the BTO stuff... that was for an iMac. BTO is not available for the G4, G4 Cube, or PowerBook (i.e. those affected by these price reductions).

I would have waited

I bought a PowerBook G3/500 on Dec 1 because the hinge on my original G3 series powerbook broke, as did the power adapter. If Apple built a product that would last, I could have waited and taken advantage of these price reductions. I want a refund of the difference in price AND a free repair of my busted laptop now.

Apple Store For Education

The Apple Store for Education is only offering the 400Mhz PowerBook. Interesting, not sure what that means. Shorter supply of 500Mhz 'Books or something? Its also amazing to see a G4 going for $1170. Far less than the low end iMac, too bad my school can't BTO that up to a DP 450.

pseudo build to order

It's unfortunate that Macs can't be bought with simply a case, motherboard, chip, & power supply. Other vendors offer peripherals, memory & hard drives for less.

OSX is really going to have to be amazing to warrant buying Apple's hardware.

These are really outstanding values. As an example, I simply could not configure any Dell system with reasonably equivalent specs to the G4/400 for less than $1,520 -- more than $200 higher than the AppleStore price for the base G4 tower. The G4/400 is a terrific machine, BTW.

You could wait, or you could pick up one of these deals now. Either way, you're getting a great value.

Add in the additional 64M of RAM to bring the Powerbook up to 128M, and you add another $200 (I used the Apple memory price here) to the Powerbook price. Plus, the HP comes bundled with a lot more software than the Powerbook. I've NEVER had my Lombard battery last 5 hours, but I concede that it's possible for a Powerbook to do nothing for 5 hours and not run out of battery life. The differences between 1M of backside cache and 256K of (faster) on-die L2 cache are principally in product cost, not performance. While I believe that G3's are faster than Pentiums, I doubt that a 400 MHz G3 is going to outperform a 700 MHz Pentium -- it would be a good thing to test -- SETI-marks, anyone? The Powerbook looks to be able to support larger external monitors, and has Firewire (which the HP can add via PC card), but that's about the only advantages I see for the Powerbook (aside from running the MacOS). I merely doubt that a DISCOUNTED price more than 10% above (after adjusting for Firewire and RAM differences) comparable competing products is going to attract a lot of buyers.

Still Overpriced

The powermac prices are ok I suppose, but the cube is still horribly overpriced. The high end model should be $1500, not the low end! This cube is built like a computer for the masses, with no upgradeability and gimmicky styling, so it ought to be priced like a computer for the masses, ie, the iMac. If Apple could get the cube down to $1300, I bet sales would start to fly.

If Apple thinks these prices are rock-bottom, they are in deep trouble. These prices are only about where macs should be priced, still high.

PowerBook vs HP Pav

I'd say the PowerBook more than matches the price/performance ratio of that HP. The fact that the HP has serial and Parallel is no advantage, there two slow interfaces, the FireWire is a huge advantage for Digital Video, fast external storage ie HD/CDRW. With the HP you have no fast external I/O. Sure you could add a FireWire PCMCIA card but thats another $100. RAM wise you'd have to be an a** to buy from Apple :-) As for the processor I can chomp up a SETI unit in the latest version in about 13 hours I think, and if I stand my PB400 up against my bosses P3 700 it stomps on it in general use (he see's that too and he's a t**) I know what deal I'd go for....

Fire sale

The lower prices and absence of "personalize" (BTO) options on the G4 desktops no doubt means, as several people have said, that those models are being replaced with new ones to be announced next week. The good news is, those new models will probably be shipping immediately if Apple is clearing the decks for them.

The bad news is, the Cubes are remaining pricey and configurable --- so it will be a while before new Cubes actually become available. Too bad.

I hope you realize that the prices listed on www.apple.ca are in Canadian dollars, not USD. The current exchange rate is about .667, so that $2249CAN G4 Cube roughly translates to $1500USD. Which compares nicely to the $1499 price in the US store.

Maybe ...

Maybe things (inventory wise) are not so bad at Apple. These are nice price reductions, but certainly not a "fire sale". If this is really enough to clear out the inventory, then things might be looking up.

If not, my suggestion to Apple is that (once new systems are shipping) they take every single machine in excess inventory and donate it to schools. This would solve the inventory problem, make a lot of schools happy, and jump start their renewed effort to win back education customers. And, yes they could afford to do it. If not Apple, then Steve Jobs could do it personally!

Great timing

I'm thrilled that Apple has slashed prices on its G4 systems, but I feel like I've been screwed twice. I bought a new 500MHz dual processor G4 a month ago. I week later, Apple announced their rebate plan ($500 for the system I bought). I called to see if they would honor my new G4 but they wouldn't. I haven't even made my first payment on it and now they've dropped the price by a full grand!

It's always the same. No matter which computer you buy, next month there will be a faster, cheaper one available. Sometimes the difference in price and/or performance is a lot, sometimes it is not.
But to buy something so close to MacWorld, and when even the mainstream press warns that computer makers will be having fire sales... is simply asking for it.
You agreed to a deal at a given point in time because the deal seemed fair to you back then, live with it and spare us your bellyaching. Maybe you should go whine on the PC forums?

Still good buys

Picked up a 450 Cube and 15" panel via a discount my company offered. $1298 for the Cube, $799 for the panel, $180 upgrade to 40 GB, $73 for the Radeon. (Will be adding a 256 MB Crucial RAM, asap.)

It all expired 12/31, and I angonized over waiting for the new models post-MWSF. I made the leap Saturday, and I think it will prove to be a good choice. Glad I didn't find out the hard way the new 2001 prices don't qualify for BTO. Yuck! That's ridiculous...

What cranks me the most is having to pony up $350 for a FW CD-RW, knowing damn well Apple will include one internally (maybe even standard, not as a BTO option). Now have to ugly up the Cube with another box. But hey, that Cube 2.0 would still be at least $1500, and not available until probably March or April. Maybe they'll include 128 K as standard, and toss in a lousy 50 mhz as gravy. Whatever, it's not worth splitting hairs over.

I think expansion of the Cube Concept will be to make it more appropriate as a small business / standard Mac market PC. Right now it's a hopped up iMac, and that's what I needed. All the beef about expandability is on target, but it's like bitching that your Ferrari doesn't have trunk space. Buy a G4 Station Wagon and get over it.

It's true, you'll never catch up though.

the $1900 wintel notebook has no where near the functionality of a $2000 stock powerbook. you would have to get PC cards for 100 bT network, firewire, video, etc, which would put well of the $2000, and would also drain the batteries of a typical P3 notebook...

and I've seen the effect of firewire PC cards too, not too hot. In theory they should shunt video at full rate, but in practice (on a top notch Dell notebook), it didn't.
Also, if anything, having serial and parallel ports on the machine are a con rather than a pro for the HP, as they take up system resources and IRQs.
Also, you can't get Final Cut Pro for Wintel.

The adage that you can't compare MHz across CPU families is doubly true when comparing laptop CPUs between Wintel portables and Mac portables.

While the portable G3 cpu is just as capable as their desktop counterpart, the portable portable Intel CPUs are very much crippled compared to the desktop brethren.

The G3 laptop will run circles around any comparitively priced Wintel laptops. Add that to your equation.

I don't know what model is being named at Best Buy (since the original poster didn't list a model number), but a visit to bestbuy.com reveals several shortcomings in this comparison that should be clarified.

It looks like we're talking about the Pavilion N5190. This model actually sells for $2099, with a $200 rebate. The Apple sells for $1999, or for $1869 at ClubMac for smart shoppers, with no rebate hassles or sales tax.

The Pavilion has no built-in provision for wireless networking. Depending on how you calculate it, this is about a $100 item.

The Pavilion has no high-speed data connection, while the Powerbook has Firewire. This is about a $75 item, and is important if you plan to do any kind of reasonable backup.

The Pavilion weighs about 7.5 lbs, while the Powerbook weighs about 6 lbs.

The Pavilion does have a floppy drive, while the Powerbook doesn't. And it comes with twice the RAM, though 64MB of RAM is widely available for under $50.

So, if you go HP, you get a bit more RAM and a floppy drive, and you have to pay sales tax on a tag of $2099 and wait for a rebate. Wireless connectivity and high-speed backup become problems to deal with later.

With the Apple, you get less weight and no floppy, easy wireless connectivity, and easy high-speed backup, for less money up front.

All in all, I'd say the Powerbook stacks up quite nicely. Depends on what you're willing to sacrifice.

Cube remains overpriced

I was hopeful that Apple would target the cube at a broader audience by cutting its price down to the 1200 range. At this price range it would be the perfect alternative to entry level users who want an iMac with a 17" monitor that's good for gaming and general use. Now Apple has proven that they don't care about selling to the common computer user. What we have is a ridiculous product range with a giant hole in the middle: at one end there is the iMac for children and grannies, and at the other end there are the powermacs and cubes, for mac loyalists who don't mind forking over SERIOUS cash for a low performance computer. What about the middle range consumer, who likes games and internet surfing, but also writes letters and maybe does some word processing? Doesn't Apple care about making money??!?!?!

Powerbook vs. Inspiron

While I understand the perspective of Mac users, I feel that some of them are just blindly following Apple as if no comparable alternative existed. I just configured a Dell Inspiron notebook at dell.com that is stacks up fairly well to Apple's Powerbook G3/500 offering for $2217, no tax, free shipping. The specs for the Inspiron are as follows:

700 mhz PIII
15" XGA TFT display
64 MB SDRAM
10 GB Ultra ATA HD
16 MB ATI Rage Mobility 128
8x DVD-ROM
Internal 56k modem
10/100 Ethernet

Everything listed in the Dell notebook either matches or exceeds Apple's Powerbook G3/500 except for the memory, but as someone previously posted, "you'd have to be an a** to buy from Apple (or Dell for that matter)." As for the processor comparison, I know that the G3 will outperform the P3 at the same mhz, but I find it hard to believe that a P3/700 isn't at least comparable to the G3/500. I own a P3/600 mhz wintel laptop myself and I've used my friend's Powerbook G3/400, and neither one toasts the other. I do own a PowerComputing PowerTower Pro 225 so it's not that I'm biased against Macs, but based on my experience the facts are hard to ignore. Also, someone previously mentioned that there's no Final Cut Pro for Windows; wel if you want to argue software, then there's a wealth of Windows software that Macs can't run (w/o emulation of course).

I'm not saying that the Dell is definitively better, only that it's at least comparable to the Powerbook G3. Just my two cents.

C'mon Apple

I am a computer user who plays games, surfs the net, and does some wordprocessing. I am not going to pay $1500 for a cube that is overpriced and underconfigured! My Performa 6300 has the same amout of RAM and it is 4 years old!If I make the cube a useable computer and add a 17" monitor, put in 128 Mb of RAM, get an Apple Care program, and get a 30GB HD; i end up spending around $2500(Dont quote me on this!!!!). I am not going to spend that much on a computer! Then i would want to add a CD-RW and defeat the whole purpose of having a cube! I could get an iMac DV SE and have more for alot less! If apple wants the Cube to compete w/ the iMac than it has to have a competitive price!!! Apple should 1) Lower the price, 2) put more memory in, 3) include a monitor, and 4) include a CD-RW. The monitor could be BTO so if you didnt want the 17" cheaper one you can get a 15" flat pannel.

I am sick of hearing people complain about paying too much. You apparently had NO problem buying when you did so why compain now. Yes it's a bummer - SO WHAT???

People buy cars one day then the next they see a sale where they could have saved $1500!!!! Do they ask the dealer for $1500 back??? OF COURSE NOT!!!!

You people need to wake up!!!!

AND FOR THE PEOPLE COMPARING APPLES TO WINDOWS:
If you want a PC, buy a PC (Piece of c***). If you want a Mac, buy a Mac. So a Dodge Neon is slightly cheaper than a Honda Accord, but for some reason, people buy Accords in mass!!!! Strange huh?

OH AND ONE MORE THING. If you want to wait to buy a computer it will always be cheaper. I'll sell you my iMac 350 (blueberry) for only $350. Payment Due now...ships in 2 years!!!!!! WHAT A STEAL (for me).

P3-700 vs G3-500

On a desktop, the P3-700 and the G3-500 are probably reasonably close (i.e. you probably won't notice). However, on a laptop, the P3 is increadably hobbledd to cut the power usage. Basically, the drop the cache (one of the most expensive and power consuming parts) to the bare minimum in order to cut power. And the pentiums STILL run much hotter than the G3. Apple can afford to give the powerbooks a full 1MB of cache because the CPU is cheaper, and uses less power. So in a laptop, a G3-500 will toast a P3-700 easily.

Apple Still Broken

For all the good that bringing Steve Jobs back did, Apple is still broken. The Cube as everyone has said is grossly overpriced. The current G4 Cube should be less than $800 with all the software of the iMac, not $1200 or $1500 as others have suggested. And that cost should included DVD/CD-RW. And most important, there should be a G3 version for $499 and ALL Macs should include the iMac Software lineup with some additional titles.

It is very unfortunate for the world that Apple, a company known for its innovation, is unable to truely innovate anymore. They hobble themselve with a rediculous pricing structures that do not reflect the cost of a product in the real world, they are only doling out little innovations just in time for demand rather than making demand by offering the innovation they could provide and that customers want.

Apple must start listening to their customers and looking at the rest of the industry. When the rest of the industry was offering a CD and a CD-RW in a Wintel Machine with firewire, a 17 GB HD and 64M Ram, the Mac Community was hobbled with a CD only 3 GB HD and 32M Ram with NO FIREWIRE.

There is now a big beautiful boat on the horizon called CONVERGENCE. Where computers, PDAs, Stereos, TVs and entertainment electronics are merging. But it looks like Apple is going to miss that too. They are going to miss it because they are greedy and stupid. Refusing to give away firewire and letting people use the firewire moniker only hurts Apple. That kind of behaviour and the Steve Jobs temper tantrums are nothing short of a JOKE which continues to make Apple and us a laughing stock.

Come on Steve, open your eyes and see what is going on. Listen to us, your customers. We are the ones who are right. And most of all STOP BEATING UP THE MAC FAITHFUL

I for one intend to my dissapproval by not purchasing your product until you do me, your customer, right.

Radeon? Who cares

Why would anybody not buy a dual-proc G4/500 for $2500 just because it didn't have a Radeon? The standard AGP Rage 128 is plenty fast enough for anything but games, and why the h*** would you play games on a $2500 computer anyway? Even though it's a good value, two and a half grand is still a little dear to be wasting on games!

Convergence

There will never be one device that does everything for the simple reason that the demands of the tasks of audio, video, and computing are so different. When we use software we want an extremely readable high-resolution screen. When we watch TV we want a picture big enough to see when we're sitting on the couch with our families and sound that fills the room. Your computer desk is a lousy place to watch movies unless you don't have any friends, and your TV is a lousy place to do word processing or page layout. Never the twain shall meet and Apple is smart enough to realize that.

I bought a PowerBook G3/500 on Dec 1 because the hinge on my original G3 series powerbook broke, as did the power adapter. If Apple built a product that would last, I could have waited and taken advantage of these price reductions. I want a refund of the difference in price AND a free repair of my busted laptop now.

Hear this; a few years ago I bought an LC for over $2300, now they're selling iMacs which are 500x faster and at less than a third that price! I demand a full refund! Well, it doesn't work that way.

wondering the huge stock

I don't understand why Apple has such a huge mass in stock. Steve told us every big Apple show how proud he was to tell us from the built to order system and how few computers were in stock.
How comes?

Hot damn, bring it on!

These are some great prices, especially for the G4/400. Apple could go a step further and budle a 17 monitor, soundsticks, game pad, and some of th best Mac game titles for $1500-1600.

Pismo 500 for $2200!!!!!!

I'm sorry folks, this is an amazing deal. I bought my Pismo 400 back in August from the education store for $2000 which ws a great deal at that time, but now the same model is $1879.00 from the education store w/ a bigger HD (too bad they don't offer the 500 MHz pismo from the applestore) This prices are great, but I'm not complaining because I got a great deal at that time, and I am not worried about left in the dust by a the new G4 book, my pismo still rocks (its silver now!)

Everybody should note however, that Apple has a habit of setting the prices of their new machines at or about the prices of the old ones. If these are the old prices then we'll be in for some great prices on the new machines as well.

Plenty of PC notebooks include the DVD and the 10/100 ethernet, USB ports are now standard on every PC notebook out there, and a lot of other things you mention are also either standard, advertising fluff, or within easy reach for less than $2,000 in the PC world. I'm afraid your argument doesn't hold much water.

Apple will never have a problem keeping its faithful. What they need to do, however, is grab new customers. To do that requires more than just features, it requires price. For the $1500 I'd spend on a G4, 128MB of RAM should be standard, RAM is incredibly cheap at the moment (another 64MB can be purchased on the Web for about $35 right now). Sales of the G4 cube have proven that an innovative product won't sell if its price tag doesn't meet the consumer's target price. Apple makes a good computer. What they need now is the pricing and support strategies to back it up.

DP 450/500

Actually this is a raising of prices for the DP's.

Before I could buy a a 450DP for $ 1849.- (BTO) and a 500DP for $1949.- (BTO). The little more RAM and HD is not worth more then $75.-.

So I guess there is no reason for me to buy now !!!

The dumbest people ...

... in the world are those who expect Apple to compete with the lowest priced PC makers.

These people see $500 (or whatever) PCs and constantly b**** about how Apple is going to die if they can't sell at those prices. Or worse, these people complain that Apple is greedy and arrogant for not selling Macs at those prices.

Get a clue! Apple is alone in having to not only do R&D on their hardware (those cheapest-tiered PC makers don't even do that!) but also R&D on their software. All of the PC makers rely on Microsoft (or Be, or RedHat, etc.) and pay a nominal fee for the packaged OS and software, and many rely on Intel for hardware development.

Until Apple sells a whole lot more shrinkwrapped copies of their OSes, they will have to SUBSIDIZE their software development (not just OSes) via their hardware sales.

So before you get on your sapbox and b**** and moan about Apple's "overpriced" machines, learn something about economics. BTW, even in Apple's recentbest quarters, they only made a few hundred million in profit out of billions in sales. They are clearly not raping and pillaging us poor Mac users.

With my PC, I run the DVD output to my TV screen. I also run a line-out from the second output of my soundcard to the stereo. Great for making tapes of MP3s, or simply using the computer as a MP3 jukebox for parties, entertaining, etc. With the Mac - there is no second audio out, and no TV-out. Get with it Jobs!

Price vs PC

The price reductions are great, but only now do I realize just why everyone else besides mac users conplain about the price of macs. I've been shopping for a pc for a friend, and here's what I came up with:

Dell Dimension 4100
866mHz PIII
5 PCI
64MB ram
20GB 5400RPM drive
12x DVD
16MB ATI Rage
$810.

I'm not sure what the speed arguements are these days, but that was the lowest price "pro" system I could configure on their site. $1299 for the G4/400 seems like a big difference to pay for the difference in processor, a fancy case, and a faster network card. I love my mac, but there's a lot I can do with the $500 difference! Lower prices please!

I can't believe Mercedes doesn't lower the price of their S-class. I mean, I can get a chevy sedan for about $80k less! No wonder everyone complains about Mercedes prices!!!

The Chevy has an engine, brakes, and room for the same number of occupants. Sure, the case is a bit fancier with the Mercedes, but $80k for the case?! Sheesh!

Right hemisphere anyone?

I use windoze (no choice) at work, a Mac at home. While I appreciate all the wonderful quantitative money aspects, if I have to sit several hours in front of a computer screen, I want a clean interface and responsive input (mouse). The quality experience of using a Mac system more than makes up for the price difference. The Mac allows me to produce a more accurate service faster (do it at home, bring it to work). This pleases my clients but man my co workers sure loose their breath keeping up to me.

The system you quoted is not a "pro" system. Configuring the Dell Dimension 4100 as closely as possible to the G4/400 results in a price of $1,308.

Despite its higher cost, the Dell is missing an optical mouse, gigabit ethernet, RAM capacity (only 512 MB max), and wireless networking readiness. OTOH, the Dell does offer a real POS case design... :-|

The $899 model you mentioned is more reasonably matched by Apple's $799 iMac.

Wintel PCs are too expensive.

Mid-range Mac

Someone said that there's a huge hole in the Mac product range, that iMacs are for kids and grannies, etc.
It always makes me mad when I hear such BS about the iMac.
Guess what, where I work, I was managing a HUGE print publishing project, two 224-page books, full of tables, and I had 2 weeks to process 70-megabyte FileMaker database into Quark-generated PDF-files.
And guess what... my 233 MHz beige G3 choked... and I brought in my blueberry home iMac DV, with 192 megs of RAM... and did the job flawlessly.

And people think you can't run Word on an iMac, that's ridiculous. The iMac has more power than 99% of all computer users will ever need, except high-end graphic design professionals.

As for mid-range: I think the Cube will eventually fill that spot. See its price drop to $1000 very soon, that's a safe bet.

Bought a Mac Dec. 1st?

If you bought with the American Express Card... they will refund any price difference for 60 days after purchase (up to $500 I believe). If you did, Call them up for their price protection department and open a claim. That's about the only reason I have an AMEX card.

No Mac purchases should be made this week without first considering next week's MacWorld keynote by Jobs. In seven days the entire professional PowerMac line will be revamped providing us Mac users with significantly more options. Can't hurt to wait a week if Apple's got 11 weeks of inventory they need to sell.

I think all these price reductions are great! Apple is still folowing PC prices (instead of leading them) but they are following more closely. This is a good thing. Apple does need to realize that a computer that is designed for a new or inexpirenced computer user coming with 64 MB of RAM is stupid. No one in that market is going to know that having 64 MB seriously limits their computers power and they arn't going to want to play with Virtual Mermory anyway. Step that RAM up to 128 and you've got a new computer user that finds the same iMac twice as fast and stable. Apple will do this I think...Remember when iMacs came with 32MB of RAM?! Apple is on the right track.

BTO avail for Education

BTO is still available for Education customers. AFAIK, Apple does not verify if you are a student or not (they didn't when I bought my dual 450 last summer...I am a student).

I configured stripped dual 450 $1644 US.

How do you like using your TV as a monitor or sharing the room w/ people watching TV? Either that or it is a lot of cable (and signal loss).

Me, I can sit on my couch and play any MP3 from my collection of over 200 CDs using a Mac 7600, VNC, and my wireless PowerBook. I could add a DVD and decoder, but why, when I could plug in my PowerBook or simply buy one for
