Apple reduces G4, Cube, PowerBook prices

updated 11:45 am EST, Mon January 1, 2001

With the myriad of Apple rebates having expired yesterday at midnight, the Apple Store has revised its prices for the systems affected by those rebates: the Power Mac G4, G4 Cube, and PowerBook G3. Pricing for the PowerMac G4 is now $1,300 for the 400 MHz, $2000 for the MP 450 MHz, and $2500 for the MP 500 MHz. The 450 MHz G4 Cube now starts at $1500, while the 500 MHz model maintains its $2300 price tag (pricing for the high-end Cube remains unchanged as well, at $2800). Only two PowerBook configurations are now available, the 400 MHz and 500 MHz, for $2000 and $2200, respectively. Readers note that the build-to-order (BTO) option is not available for these configurations. [updated]

    Brace yourself....

Overstock and low demand notwithstanding, whenever Apple slashes pricing like this you can expect new models at MacWorld. They;ve been doing it for years, its no different this time...

This is gonna be a good one this year!

    No BTO options ...

... It looks like the configurations are fixed - you have to go with thier set packages. If they had BTO with these prices, I might have jumped =)

I assume they are prepping the BTO pipeline for new models to be released at MWSF. It's going to be an interesting show ...

    Custom options

Am I just a moron, or are the customizing options gone? How do you add a Radeon card or move to a smaller HD?

    BTO still there

Apple build to order rocks with a lot more new options.
For instance, if I do the following:
    1. visit http://store.apple.com/
    2. Click on the iMac
    3. Pick an iMac DV+ Sage
    4. Pick 64MB of RAM (I can get more RAM for a lower price elsewhere at http://www.ramseeker.com through Crucial, Techworks, Kingston, The Chip Merchant, Memory Solutions, and Macsolutions)
    5. Choose no airport card
    6. Now I have a bunch of options I never knew about:
Save $100 when you purchase any iBook or iMac and an HP DeskJet 648C color printer.

    Prices hurt in Canada

Go to www.apple.ca and click on 'store' and see how much we pay in Canada!

$1999 for the lowest G4 tower config.
$749 for the CRT 17" monitor
$2249 for the $1499 USD Cube
$225 for an additional 64 megs ram! OW!

Canadian currency sure hurts when it comes to buying Apple products.

    Happy new year though!

    this is cheap?

Apple's in trouble if this represents fire-sale pricing. It's still well above the Wintel spawn -- in this morning's local paper I see ads for HP notebooks sporting 700 MHz P3's, 128M RAM, 10G HD, DVD, 14" active matrix display etc -- for under $1900. Selling 400 MHz Powerbooks for $2000 is not gonna cut it, except for Mac folks, and it will only cannibalize potential sales of G4 Powerbooks. For the new G4 Powerbooks to be selling to anyone outside the dwindling pool of Macophiles, they'd better be priced at UNDER $2000.

Due to space constraints my first post was truncated on the 6th item:

It used to be that many of these items you had to order through other mail order companies. Apple is doing us a favor here of being our onestop for everything (except memory). We should thank them. Granted it isn’t Outpost where you get free shipping (albeit you have to build on any hardware yourself), or MacConnection which does the installation for you before you buy, it still is pretty good. So before you complain about the loss of build to order, walk through the step by step process that the store has. Don’t click on any total buttons

    $2000 notebook

Apple's $2000 notebook includes, 10/100 ethernet for cable and DSL. It includes SVGA, 2 Firewire ports, 2 USB ports, S-Video out, a full sized keyboard with curved arm rests that are very ergonomic, a trackpad positioned within easy reach of the thumbs, DVD, 5 hours of battery with an option of 10 hours for additional $100. There is a lot more to the Powerbook than meets the eye.

    That's an iMac (D'uh!)

To the guy who posted all the BTO stuff... that was for an iMac. BTO is not available for the G4, G4 Cube, or PowerBook (i.e. those affected by these price reductions).

    D'uh...!
