Apple updates SuperDrive firmware

Apple has released a SuperDrive firmware update for Mac computers equipped with Apple's DVD-R optical drive. The update -- which affects several iMac, eMac, Power Mac and PowerBook models -- addresses an issue where some drives are unable to recognize high-speed media, and as a result of using this media, may suffer permanent damage. The Software Update application in Mac OS X is displaying updates for some users, while others have yet to be notified of this release. An Apple Knowledge Base document for the PowerMac update; see below.

    PowerBook?

Your description says this affects PowerBooks. Unless others have the new 1GHz systems that were announced yesterday, this doesn't affect PowerBooks. Plus, I'm sure that when the new PowerBooks ship, in 3-4 weeks, they'll already have this firmware update installed.

    PowerBook

Read the actual document at Apple's site before posting. They say:

" If you have an iMac (17-inch Flat Panel), eMac with SuperDrive, Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) with SuperDrive, or PowerBook G4 (1GHz/867MHz) with SuperDrive you do not need this update. Your computer's SuperDrive is already compatible with high-speed media. Computers that do not have a SuperDrive do not need this update."

    Doesn't work for me

I can't seem to get it to work on my Beige G3. When is Apple going to release a firmware update for us with older computers? Looks like another money-grabbing attempt at Apple to force us to buy whole new computers just to get DVD-R capabilities, when all we really need is a few tweaks to the firmware to get our stock drives to burn DVDs. This is such a scam!

    This is c***.

I have a PowerMac G4/450 DP, with an Apple SuperDrive (pulled from a Quicksilver.) The updater doesn't allow me to install, saying my machine isn't compatible. Why not? I have a SuperDrive, fer crying out loud!

WHAT c***. What, I have to reinstall it in the original machine, just so I can update the firmware? Geez, it's c*** like this that make the PC world look attractive.

    Try the aftermarket one..

You should try and download the aftermarket DVD-R update from pioneer... Maybe that would work..

I have a SuperDrive pulled from a QuickSilver too, in a FireWire enclosure hooked up to my SE/30 and the update ran fine.....

    You fools

For those of you who are using Superdrives you've installed yourselves in older machines - expect no support from Apple - and rightly so.

Apple ONLY supports Superdrives that shipped as part of their machines.

I'm afraid it's Pioneer you should be asking for support for now - because as soon as you ripped that drive from the machine it came from, it was no longer Apple's problem - you should have bought a Pioneer aftermarket drive!
