Apple Japan has acknowledged that faulty power switches in some Power Mac G4 Cubes can cause smoke and burning smells to be emitted from the unit. The tech info library article, which is in Japanese, reassures customers that there is no risk of personal harm from the problem.

    Only Japanese?

Surely there is an English edition. If not, I'd think Apple is hiding from us English only speakers. Thank you for the translation. Now is time for someone to actually get hurt or lose data to faulty switches before Apple really does something about it.

    apple's quality

really sad.. a $1800 machine that has 'cracks' (yea they are mold lines, but for 1800 dollars you would think they could fix it) and now faulty power switches... even emachines doesnt make stuff this crappy..

    bright side

Look on the bright/idealistic side, every Apple hardware s**** up is one step closer to OSX on x86.

    No kidding

Apple needs to get its head out of its a** and realize that demand for computers is dropping... and dropping FAST. Fancy packaging isn't going to change that, and a ridiculously high price tag doesn't help matters either. The future is in cell phones, PDAs, ultra-small notebooks, etc... Apple's old school mentality will only confirm its desire to be a small, niche player.

Apple would have missed the PC growth boat entirely if it weren't for the iMac. Steve, that iMac was fantastic, but the 6-12 month waiting period between other major products (iBook, PowerBook, Cube) DOESN'T WORK anymore.

Do you think Steve is going listen our complaints? He's a big a$$hole and only thinks his idea is brilliant.

    Spamming MACNN comments

Last week it was the audion spam. Now we have this (perhaps these) spammers. The english usage in at least three of these messages is altogether too similar along with the unusual usage of ellipsis.

    Price is the key

If Apple needs to bring itself out of this rut of poor sales, it simply needs to lower prices. Consumers will again come flocking to the iMac if a 500 MHz model sold for CAN$1999. (US$1330), and bring Apple superior sales and returned profitability.

    apple asked for it

No wonder there is spamming...look at what its about. Apple just doesn't get it. An $1800 computer that has cracks and smokes? Silent, but deadly! It's obvious now that the cube was a last minute effort to draw attention away from the Mhz gap, and it did not undergo proper testing.

I've noticed that Apple's products have been cheapening up all around lately. My G4 is loud as a jet, but I've got an old 7200 that's very quiet--like Apple starting using cheaper, noisier fans. hmmph! How about instead of fanless computers Apple just uses quieter fans?

    fans, seriously

I agree, I recently saw a friend's G4 tower, & was amazed at the roar coming from it. My G3/400 is much quieter, as is my home brew PC with *7* fans (although they were all chosen for their dB rating & speed variability with heat, something Apple should certainly consider).

The usage of ellipses over periods is becoming so widespread that you can't call it unusual. Uneducated perhaps, but not unusual.
