Up coming software: Nikon has announced for Nikon digital SLR owners: Capture 3.5, D1X Buffer RAM upgrade, and the Digital SLR Firmware updates. Nikon Capture 3.5 brings Mac OS X 10.2 compatibility, improved speed when opening, viewing, and saving photos, and added control from Capture Control. The D1X Buffer RAM upgrade doubles the capacity of buffer RAM in the D1X, the number of consecutive frames in a burst jumps from a maximum of 9 JPEGs/TIFFs to 21, and from 6 NEFs to 14. The Nikon Digital SLR Firmware Updates 2.0 adds PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) to the camera, improved metadata of a photo, and support for Lexar Media's Write Acceleration (which improves write speed by 10%).

A reader notes that he received an official email about Graphic Converter 4.5, which will be available on November 1. "Users who purchased Serial Numbers before 1 April 2002 will not be eligible for a free upgrade."

    WTF?

Well, if this is true, then I will be POd. Here is a quote from an article that Apple posted about GC :

"So, how much does it cost? How does a $35 shareware fee sound? And, you only have to pay it once in order to get unlimited updates."

    RE:WTF

I Always go to the manufactures website before trusting an outside source.
This must be one major upgrade for him to charge an upgrade fee.
How many years has it been?

    But where did this info

come from? I couldn't find anything about it on www.lemkesoft.de.

GC is a great program. I have been using it for a bout 4 years and I won't mind paying again. But since, I don't have a lot of money at the moment the reality is that I probably won't upgrade until GC gets some new feature I don't get in 4.4.4 and is worth $30 to me. That's why I'm looking for a feature list.

Well, if it is a truly amazing upgrade, then I maybe more comfortable putting up the cash. But the *fact* still remains, that the author has always stated that the price of the app would get you unlimited updates.

    GIF patent

I also got the email as I recenly purchased a copy for my personal use.

Thorston always said that the reason updates are free is because of the (supposed) Unisys patent on GIF.

He didn't want to have to shell out to Unisys every time he issued a paid upgrade.

Don't know if that patent has been broken or if he really needs the dough or what. I never could understand how he could make a living on a 1x license considering the amount of work he puts into GC.

GC is cheap at twice the price.

    GC still a fantastic buy

C'mon, things can change sometimes. That was Apple's wording: who knows if they assumed it, or if at the time Lemke didn't think he needed to charge for updates. It's still a fanastic program, and considering I bought mine waaay back when he had to mail it to me on a floppy (!), I figger he's long overdue to change his price scheme!

    Cost

Like apple and so many other software developers, he's probably realized the point of limited returns. I mean, I bought GraphicConverter some 4 years ago, and it seems like he keeps updating the freakin' thing (way too often in my opinion). Sooner or later you reach a point where there's fewer people buying it (because everyone's got it), and so little incentive to keep updating it.

I guess he could always decide to just stop enhancing the product, or cancel it altogether if that'd make you happier. Or, he could do what others in the same situation have done (and no, not just Apple): rename it! Change it from GraphicConverter to GraphicConverter Pro! Now its not the same old product. Its all new! So, a new price!
