Making another foray into retailing, Apple Australia will reportedly refurbish 20 of the country's 50 AppleCentres and to launch new stores in high-traffic centres. Meanwhile, Sydney accounting firm Armstrong Wily is examining the reasons behind the 2001 collapse of Buzzle, a consortium of six Apple dealerships that was put into liquidation at the end of last year with debts totalling $32 million.

    Price parity needed too

Increasing exposure to Apple products is a great idea, but something has to be done about bringing prices closer in line with people's spending power.

Macs are very expensive in this country relative to PCs.

The current poor A$ exchange rate is a factor, but Apple Australia's price gouging doesn't help: going dollar-to-dollar and adding tax still leaves Australian Macs priced about 10-15% higher than in the US.

    Buzzle

I can tell you why Buzzle failed:
c*** accounts system that was taken over by one of the stores who couldn't get it working
Directors too busy worrying about what they will float the company for
c*** name. Many professional companies stopped buying off them because they found the name stupid.
Deadwood. A few of the dealers who joined bought massive debt with them.

As for the price issue, that is huge. You look at the release prices in the US, calculate what that will equal here and it is often much higher.

    Prices in Oz

A quick look at the tower systems seems to show that US -> Aus = (US x 2 ) + A$500.

I think it's the "+$500" that's hurting. Our dollar is hovering around US$0.55 these days so Apple Oz certainly don't mind a bit of a markup.

Come on Apple Oz: if you are going to act as a box-shifter, charge like one.

Oh well, I'll get the bottom of the range, then.

    Prices not quite so bad

iMac G4 15" - identical models on the Apple US store for USD 1199 and the Apple Australia store for AUD 2595.

Based on today's exchange rate AND adding GST (which has to happen on imported goods) the direct conversion from US dollars to Australian would come to AUD 2384, only $212 different from the advertised Australian price. Add some margin for currency hedging, air freight from the US, and noting that the US advertised price excludes any state taxes, this margin is whittled away considerably.

On an iMac? They are shipped from Taiwan where they are built.
