Adobe has released Acrobat Reader 5.1, an update to the application for viewing PDF files. Version 5.1 adds support for commenting tools, digital signatures and the ability to save forms and forms data for offline completion, submission and archival storage. (Adobe today announced Windows and Solaris versions of its $75,000 Adobe Document Server for Reader Extensions server, which provides enterprises the ability to automate electronic forms and document processes-reducing reliance on inefficient paper-based workflows; however, no Mac OS X version was noted.) A version with search/accessibility is also available. [Std, Search]

    For Mac OS X?

I'm a little new here at MacNN forums but I was wondering why this link is here. It seems to only go to a Windows 5.1 Reader Update page, not a Mac version. Even from Adobe.com, you can only get to a 5.0 update page for the Mac. Just curious. I don't really use (or want to use) MacNN for Windows news.

    still good to know

Even though there's not an OS X version yet, some of us actually do cross-platform work and find this news helpful.

    No save

My heart jumped when I read "the ability to save forms and Forms Data for offline completion." I thought FINALLY, my users can fill out a form, save it, then send it to me!

No Joy, you CAN'T save a PDF Form file with Acrobat Reader 5.1 with fields filled in.

Cray will deliver a system with theoretical peak performance of 40 trillion calculations per second (teraOPS) using two calculations/clock cycle, or 20 teraOPS using one calculation/clock cycle. Red Storm is expected to become operational in fiscal year 2004, and will use the upcoming Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD) Opteron™ processors connected via a low-latency, high-bandwidth, three-dimensional mesh interconnect network based on HyperTransport™ technology. This system is expected to be at least seven times more powerful than Sandia’s current ASCI Red supercomputer on actual weapons problems.

    $75,000

Seventy-five thousand f****** dollars for some stupid electronic form software? The people at Adobe are true morons. What business is going to be able to justify paying for a piece of software that's more expensive than the goddamned hardware it's running on? Jesus F. Christ... (Give me $2,500 and I'll custom develop a better solution for your needs -- Mac OS X native.)

    Money grubbers

"Adobe® Document Server for Reader® Extensions allows government agencies to add robust forms-processing tools to the free and ubiquitous Adobe Acrobat® Reader software at no extra cost to their constituents. In turn, their constituents can now download, save, fill in, digitally sign, and submit electronic Portable Document Format (PDF) forms at their convenience, dramatically lowering processing costs and virtually eliminating the need for paper-based forms. And thanks to its interoperability with existing IT structures, Document Server for Reader Extensions enables government organizations to make the move to e-government more securely and easily. "

Yeah, right, "at no extra cost to their constituents." Who the f*** is going to be footing the bill for the $75,000 software? You guessed it: THE TAXPAYERS (== you and me). No thank you, if the government can't get a cheaper solution, then I'd rather fill out the forms by hand than support those money-grubbing b******* at Adobe with MY money. Send the $75,000 to a school that needs it instead. a*******.
