Microsoft counters Apple's Switch campaign

updated 04:25 pm EDT, Mon October 14, 2002

Countering Apple's Switch campaign, Microsoft has posted the 'Confessions of a Mac to PC Convert.' The switcher, who is unnamed, writes "I am a freelance writer; I demand the best in mobile computing. There's a much greater choice of portable computers and features, for less money, on the Windows platform. My laptop came with 512 MB of RAM, a 15" screen, a DVD player, and Windows XP Home Edition pre-installed, for $450 less than a comparable iBook. My recommendation is to go straight to Windows XP Professional; the extra features for mobile users are worth it." [MS has pulled the page, but it can be found here]

    Unnamed? Hmmm...

...this rather smacks of MSFT's previously-documented petitions filled with signitures of non-existant people (and employees of either MSFT or the marketing company which ran the petition).

Not that there aren't plenty of people out there who've switched from Macs to Windows PCs (obviously), but I find it hard to believe any of 'em are happy enough with their choice to voluntarily submit their "story" to Mr. Gates & Co.

    it's true!

Office drones typically use two or three programs all day long for data entry, text editing, inventory checking, etc. Why would they spend money for a Mac when they could use a Linux computer for less.

Creative people need Macs. They need a machine that is an extension of the mind, not a typewriter.

    blahblahblah

Hoo. Compelling testimonial, considering the image of the "switcher" is a stock photo.
    Nice touch.

    Who is the real target?

Perhaps Microsoft is trying to get a few Mac Users to jump ship but I would guess that this campain is to give them some fodder to present to the windows users thinking of switching to MacOSX. MS is not trying to get us to come aboard as much as they are trying to slow the number of people jumping from their boat. IMHO

    Hum...

Looks like the conclusion of this confession is:

Windows XP sucks but the hardware is cheaper.

What's the interest of having a cheaper notebook with an OS that doesn't work correctly?

    Apple started this war

I am a big mac fan and have used Windows XP recently. As far as I'm concerened Windows XP is nowhere close to OS X in terms of performance, ease of use...you can guess the rest. However, I must say that since the switch ad campaign Apple started I've been worried about a full scale war breaking out between Apple and Microsoft. With Microsoft taking away their software support for OS X in the end. While I like the commercials and think they are gutsy and tell the truth the timing is a little off. With the worst bear market since the thirties roaring technology companies have to do anything to survive. Apple has expensive product offerings that are going to come under severe pricing pressure next year. Now Microsoft has launched their first major counter offensive and they have deep pockets. If Apple is to survive I think they should hold off on pissing off the big monster until the bull market is raging again. I liked it better when they could attack Intel with those bunny suit commercials from way back in '98.

    It makes me laugh so...

I guess "Switchers" really bothers Microsoft. There counterpunch is good for a laugh.
