    Its about time

ProTools users now get to come into the 21st century. Now only Quark users are left behind.

    Great! Pick it up in...

... oh, right, 9 months' time. That's great! We'll just hum in the meantime. And no, we don't need a new machine. Or we'll buy it now. Or something.

Vapourware is alive, and looking very healthy thank you.

Well Digi is pretty good at announcing and then shipping soon after.
    I'd take that bet

    RE:Great! Pick it up in

If you look on the DUC forums, several folks who attended the AES show where this was announced said that they were told it'll be out in December, both Pro and LE versions. Digi002 and Mbox support will shortly follow, with 32 track support on the Mbox and some PT5 TDM features available in LE.

The upgrade will be $75 for those who haven't bought PT5 within the last 6 months. The stuff that will be out in Q2 2003 will be support for some add-on software for Mac OS X and the Windoze XP version of PT6

    What about MBox?

If you read through the announcement , you may have noticed that the upcoming update does not apply to MBox or Digi002 users...this strikes me as strange, and inconvenient becasue in my environment we use both the Digi001 (covered, according to PR) and MBoxes (not covered), meaning that only half of our production machines can be upgraded to OSX which seems a little more frustrating than not upgrading at all....

I understand that MBox support is forthcoming, but since it's "soon" after 2nd quarter 2003... it's a bit disconcerting.

Anyway. At least they've cleared up that they are releasing a OS X version of ProTools LE, since I was personally afraid they wouldn't.

    Maybe soon...

I've pasted a clip from digidesign.com below. The way I read it, the actual software will be out who-knows-how-soon. Only some compatibility (AVoption|XL, Unity, and MediaManager) will be delayed until Q2 2003. No serious studio would use windows anyways, so we won't worry about the XP support. ;)

Very glad to see ProTools back in the game.

Pro Tools on Windows XP support of the new features, and OSX compatibility with AVoption|XL, Unity, and MediaManager are scheduled for Q2, 2003.

    do you people read?

it doesn't say anywhere that protools 6 or mbox support is 2nd quarter 2003.
"Pro Tools on Windows XP support of the new features, and OSX compatibility with AVoption|XL, Unity, and MediaManager are scheduled for Q2, 2003."

that means that protools 6 will be available soon, then mbox and digi002 (non-pci LE systems), then in 2nd quarter - xp and the rest. haven't we all learned not to trust macnn yet?

    AT LAST!

I can't tell you how many people (mostly amateur and semi-pro musicians) have waited for this announcement! Once the product is actually out and reviewed, expect a WAVE of upgrading hardware! Given that by that time Quark will have their 6.0 out (... he said crossing fingers), Q2 and Q3 are starting to look might good for Apple.

    Only 2 years...

This better not be another crappy carbon port - they've had 2 years. Probably still worth waiting for 6.1 if you're a pro...or at least until your favourite (essential?) plugs are go...

Also, ProTools users won't be buying any new Mac's Q1 2003, as they won't be able to run OS 9 versions of their favourite software until PT6 arrives....
