BusinessWeek: Jaguar Does Windows

Mac OS X 10.2 brings seamless cross-platform networking to the Macintosh platform, explains BusinessWeek editor Stephen Wildstrom. Before the $130 upgrade became available, sharing files between a Mac and a PC was a tedious task, requiring third-party software to avoid the use of removable media or e-mail. Wildstrom also praises Apple for its relatively low multi-user pricing: $200 for a five-computer family pack, compared to pricing of $100 per computer for Windows XP Home Edition upgrades.

    Rendezvous

Um... didn't Apple make Rendezvous Open Source just a short while ago? And hasn't every major printer manufacturer already jumped on the Rendezvous open standard bandwagon? We've already seen an exec from Phillips praising Apple for making Rendezvous Open and available for 3rd parties to develop into their products. Also, we've seen an HP printer prototype automatically configure through Rendezvous and CUPS.... I could go on.

Why can't these tech writers do a little research before popping off misinformed comments that the general public will take as the gold standard in tech reporting???

    We'll take it

Any positive article about Mac is still good news.

I would much rather see an article like this than another from Kim Komando

    Tedious task?

Even with 3rd party software, this was never a tedious task. Thursby's DAVE is super-simple to install, and is configured almost instantaneously.

    XP Home

The licensing info for XP home from the article is a little off. You can get XP Home full for 84$ shipped and additional licenses for $48 shipped.

So XP is cheaper for 1 to 3 licenses (most home LANs) and OS X is a little cheaper for families with 4 or 5 systems.

    Yes, TEDIOUS TASK!

I can't comment on Dave, but my experience with PC/MacLan was the single most frustrating thing I've ever encountered in 18 years of computing. I spend several DAYS of sheer aggravation trying to get the damn thing to work, and finally gave up on the whole idea. It did work occassionally, which made it even harder to troubleshoot, but it never worked when I really needed it to, and it destabilized my Win98 machines to the point that I had to remove it.

PC networking was the primary reason I bought Jaguar, and it nearly brought tears to my eyes when I saw my PC volumes show up on my Mac. I only wonder why they didn't include a feature like this years ago.

    Not tedious

PC/MacLan is installed on the PC. It makes the PC look like a Mac on the network. Anytime you mess around with PC networking settings you're asking for trouble.
DAVE installs on a Mac (makes the Mac look like a PC on the network) and is very easy to install. I have had no problems installing it.

    Re: Tedious task?

Heck, even WITHOUT 3rd party software, under 10.1.x, this was still possible. It just involved knowing the IP address of the PC you wanted to connect to and typing in an SMB path. Not easy necessarily, but certainly not a tedious task. Still, Jaguar's PC connectivity is a pleasure!

    It's about time

It's nice to see BW letting a decent writer say something the Mac. Did they finally fire that idiot Haddad?

    Re: XP Home

The prices you quote on XP home may be correct, but also remember that XP Home is just a crippled version of XP Pro, whereupon apple only sells one version of X. No permissions abilities in XP Home, no dual processor support, no real networking, so don't expect to take your laptop to work and see your NT domain.

Also remember XP home (and probably pro) have restrictions on using their OS as a server (OK, I'm assuming this based off the restrictions they had in NT Workstation), no more than a specific number of shared computers allowed, meaning you're breaking the license using it to host anything but some not-seen-much web site.
