REAL Software has announced that REALbasic 5, the next version of its software development environment, will support both Macintosh and Windows. "REALbasic for Macintosh users have been able to create applications for both Macintosh and Windows since 1999. This new version will allow Windows users to do the same thing." The software will ship in the first quarter of 2003.

    So...

So the Mac user base has reached critical mass and they need more revenue. Enter the new Windows version of the IDE.

Mac users prepare to become a second class citizen in yet another product category. Watch as the Windows version gets newer features first until the differences lead to a Windows-centric REALBasic.

Think it can't happen? Ask the users of Media Cleaner (almost finished on the Mac), DeBabelizer, Bungie. Ambrosia and more apps/companies that no one remembers any more.

    Fine by me

You've been able to build Windows apps within the mac IDE of RB for quite some time. It isn't a surprise that they're migrating the IDE over so you can develop on the platform you're targetting too.

    No good...

I agree with the first comment. Yet another great mac developer switching to the dark side. Having RealBasic was nice while it lasted.

    Uhh...

Both versions are compiled with the same code. So, when one version gets an update or a new feature, so does the other.

Ahh, MCP - RIP on the Mac

I use to love MCP. It still a great app, but needs to be updated to new formats and standards. The poor company has been tossed around, bought and sold from pc company to pc company, all of them with little love for the mac like the company that created it.

MCP will never be for the mac what it once was. It is still good, but all future potential is lost.

    RIP MCP for the Mac.

    I'm not concerned

As was said, the base for both programs is probably the same, and the code it produces definitely is. I'm sure RB still knows what side of the Mac/Win fence their bread is buttered on (to mix a couple of metaphors!). The main point to RB still is making Mac code (plus VB still has a good lock on the Windows world). RB is still unique in this regard.

    Not a zero sum game

Please, try and understand the concept of "and" as opposed to "or". REALbasic is a cross-platform tool (as in, more than one platform). More Mac software, more people being able to use Macs at work, more money for Mac developers who make Windows versions of their REALbasic projects because they are better, and lots more. It's a good thing...

    Real Interest

I love my Mac, so don't take this the wrong way. RealBasic is like an animal in an ecosystem. Their primary task is to survive and propagate. Going to the Windows platform allows them to survive in a precarious market. They have a great product, why not let more people use it and receive financial security as well? The future of programming is a move away from the technically adept programmer to the volksprogrammer. The people's programmer. RealBasic is making this happen.
