Microsoft today announced a joint limited-time offer with Apple, offering Office v. X for Mac for $200 with the purchase of a new Mac: "The special price for Office v. X with the purchase of any new Mac is the latest demonstration of Microsoft and Apple's shared commitment to offering Mac customers great products at great values. It marks the first time that the Office for Mac suite has been made available to purchasers of Macs." The offer is good from October 1st through January 7, 2003. A similar offer is running in Japan from August until December 2002, and Microsoft says it plans similar promos for customers in Australia, Europe, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore in November.

Apple today announced its joint promo with Microsoft: the Office Party promo is not valid with the purchase of used, refurbished, or demonstration equipment and is not is not valid for Apple's Education Institutional, Individual, or Campus Reseller purchase programs, although it can be combined with Apple's Design Freely promo, which offers a free copy of InDesign with the purchase of Power Mac. Both products must be purchased on the same invoice. (We noted the promo earlier today.)

    finally!

i've known so many people who bought a new mac only to balk at an additional $500 for ms office. this should address those consumers. good move all-round. long overdue.

    Whoop Di Doo!

So all I have to do is buy a new Mac and I can get Office for the price that any Windows user can get it for? MS can suck it.

    Interesting timing...

Notice how the end of the promo in the US (and probably Canada) is the same day as the MWSF keynote should take place? Something tells me that Microsoft may be planning a more permanent price change around then.

    What is MacNN's problem?

Why are the prices always rounded up? Isn't that inaccurate reporting? It's $199. not $199.99 or $200. So why say $200 if thats not what it is?

    This will certainly...

...help both Apple and MS sell more of their products. There is no question that this is an atractive price that will cause many people to reconsider waiting to buy a new Mac.

Hopefully this will cause enough people to buy to affect Apple's bottom line in a positive way. It may also make MS wake up and see that they would be selling way more software if they didnt' charge so dad-gum much money for it.

    What about...

...those that already bought their new Mac this year? Let's see a $299 "special price" without a new purchase!

    Jan 7?

It ends on the first day of MWSF? Interesting. Maybe that's when Apple will either bundle Office v.X with all new Macs or maybe bundle StarOffice. Who knows....
