I can't believe this! I'm at work (supposedly working!) on my freakin' win2k box and I can't get the 10.2.1 update! Even when they post the standalone updater, I bet it won't even work on my machine! That's just like Apple. Making me take their update their way, not how I want it. I can't believe they force you to own a Mac to get this thing!!! Knowing them, they'll probably also force me to install it on my Mac before I get any of its improvements, too!!!

i had a similar problem

i had a similar issue on my quicksilver g4. after the reboot (following installation) it took forever to come up, and then it rebooted itself again. it finally came up after another reboot. have you tried booting it again?

problems with mail

some early reports include problems with mail services after installing this upgrade.

I installed iTunes 3.0.1 under OS 10.1.5. Then the 10.2.1 update was released, so installed 10.2 and 10.2.1 (via "archive and install").

Do I need to reinstall iTunes in order to get the latest kernel extension stuff?

WINS Server support

Did anyone notice a change regarding proper support of WINS Servers in 10.2.1? In Directory Access for Jaguar 10.2.0, it essentially ignored the WINS server listed, or it would only list the WINS server in the SMB/CIFS listings under Connect to Server...

This would be a huge improvement, since it would cut down on the crappy broadcast traffic to find all of the Windows machines right now...

Can't get to Login scree

After updating my ibook 600 to 10.2.1, I am no longer able to login! It doesn't boot up to the login screen anymore, just a blue screen (of death) - this is strangely familiar to my Windows days ;)
If anyone knows how to fix this , it would be appreciated rather than yet again, re-installing Jaguar from scratch...
BTW, I have had nothing but problems with Jaguar on my Beige G4 and ibook. 10.1.5 was slower but much more stable AND the graphics were faster.

I did not jump to the Jaguar yet (I switched in april). Perhaps at the end of the year - for Christmas maybe... I was waiting for these kind of goofy surprises...

iBook 500 A-OK

Did both iTunes 3.0.1 and OS X 10.2.1 without a hitch.

Only surprise is that mail.app asked for keychain permission once for each account which it didn't do since installing - must've changed something in security that needed it.

But everything's fine and a whitewashed text problem has stopped. it was bizzarre - with smoothing on in the OS and IE5, clicking the mouse would make bunches of text randomly disappear from view - actually they turned transparent - often i had to select all to make sure i saw everything readable. that's all over now.

But it didn't cure my hangnail or raise my gas mileage or turn my cd-rom into a superdrive - damn that Jobs fellow! That's it! I'm going out and buying a KayPro!

Everything working great here on a G4/466 with 1GB RAM. Things are snappier™, and everything except VueScan works. Mail works fine. For everyone having a problem, I bet you moved things, or otherwise frelled your system good! (because you are a butt head! ;)

Installed it over 10.2 (clean install) works fine mail launches just fine and it still has it's icon. As for snappier I'm undecided, I'm hoping Apple can work some ho ho magic and get QE to work with my iBook 8MB Ati Rage 128. I'd be really impressed if they were able to do that, also make iCal snappier that thing is slow but QE on my 8MB first =)

My iMac is feeling like a new machine - that's it I'm switching to XP

I updated my LCD iMac just 30 minutes ago and everything goes fine and feels faster. I have found no compatibility problems. At first reboot, it took much longer time, but it rebooted fine. After I checked if everything is ok, I usually reboot one more time just to check again if everything is ok and to see at what speed the thing goes on: The second reboot was really faster and moreover it seems that things wich was slower in 10.2 than 10.1.5, like a log out, are now faster. For now I am very satified.

Beige G4

Just as a retort, I've had Jaguar installed on my Beige G4 (rev A no less, with a freakin' Voodoo 4500 card no less) and it works fine. I did clock down my bu from 2:1 to 3:1. At 2:1 I was getting the occasional freeze with x.2.

DVMC-DA1 now works in X

I never thought it would work in OS X. This is great news. Thank you Apple for resurrecting a $400 piece of hardware.

Image Capture now drives my Epson Perfection 1650 scanner! Just after I bought VueScan... Oh well, you never can have enough scanner drivers for OS X, i guess.

hardly any difference speed wise from osx.1 after level zeroing the drive on a g4/400 832 megs of ram. windows seems barely snappier but the os still remains "just usable" which translates to unusable by me. everything in osx seems to take more power per square inch just to do the same thing in 9. since i have the pci g4 i decided to enable QE via a online guide at ars techna whatever the h*** it is. didnt hurt, but no speed increase at all doing anything including web related. which is why i guess apple decided it wasnt important for pci users in the 1st place. "usable" and "fast enough" just isnt good enough for me since i like my mac on crack and my mouse on speed so until i buy a new 2000$ machine with tons of ram im stopping upgrading purchases for now. so much for jag.

I'm having the same problem as they guy that had a B&W G3 that stopped on the grey screen. My beige g3 with G4 upgrade (Sonnet) does the same thing. This has happened twice before: once after installing norton antivirus and rebooting, once after updating antivirus after a successful install and now after the 10.2.1 update called for reboot.

The other times I've had to reinstall the OS and then my backup. I can't keep doing this as it can take hours.

I did the verbose mode... it stops after loading some kernel extensions.. last one that loads succesfully it appears is something SCC something.. can't remember.. anyway.. after that line compltes the next line does nothing.. just blank and stays that way for a long while.

works with oldies

I've put 10.2.1 over 10.2 running on a 7500 (w/ XLR8 466 MHZ G3) and a Lombard (running Powerlogic 500 MHz G4) with no problems. Well, the 7500 did fumble around a bit before I remembered to reinstall bootx and the otherworld extensions.

Works great on "unsupported" machines. If you have troubles, be patient, reset everything you can think to reset, and keep trying. Eventually it will sort things out and all will be well. (in a perfect world).

Mail Problem - Fix

I had the mail issue, too. I'd launch it and it would start and then quit. I noticed it was launching somehing new in the dock as well. Did a search and found a strange little 773K mail.app file. in the applications folder. I put it on a Firewire drive and unmounted the drive. Once that little mail file (it has a generic application icon) was gone the mail launched with no problem. So far no other problems.

Anyone know if it fixes the problem with IE where pages don't fully load (you have to resize the screen or something else to refresh the window to see all the text)? Its only a bug that's apparently been around since, oh, I don't know, 1969 or so.

Most browsers now faster

In response to a previous poster, since updating to 10.2.1, Mozilla, IE and Omniweb all download the web sites I visit daily about 25% faster than before. This is subjective because I did not put a stop watch against it. Also, several of my applications open faster than before. This is on my G4 550 Ti powerbook with 512 RAM.

I love the Software Update system and the cable connection that make these large downloads a painless, prompt process.

B&W G3 w/G4 upgrade

After 10.2 caused my old SCSI CD-RW to stop working under iTunes & Finder (and Toast still doesn't work in 10.2), I went out and bought a used combo drive. Now, 10.2.1 fixed my Old SCSI CD-RW compatibility again. Well, 2 CD burners are better than one, I guess.

Toast still doesn't work though.

Also: I bought a Radeon 7000 PCI to try the PCI Quartz Extreme hack... it was great and super fast! Lots of problems, though, with Quicktime and window redraw, especially when hiding apps. Oh well. :(

So I hit SU, see that 10.2.1 is out, and decide to install it while I take a break. I come back to my Mac, reboot....and nothing! Nothing! The HD is totally hosed! I tried booting off an OS 9 CD and and the entire HD is unreadable! I'm TOTALLY SCREWED!!! 50+ hours of work, deadline on Friday 8:00 am! This is FUNDING, this update is going to cost people their jobs! People with families!

What sort of fly-by-night operation does Apple think they're running? How can they do this to people with families and mouths to feed? Why can't they put together an update that doesn't hose my HD!!!!!!!

Fixed Windows CD issue

The update has fixed a serious bug in 10.2 which prevented Windows systems from traversing folders on burned cds. Pooh on Apple for letting such a serious bug get out in the first place, but I've got to hand it to Apple for being man enough to get this update out so quickly. Worked fine on three different type G4 systems.

!0.2.1 Won't Sleep!

On my DP 867 "Windtunnel" 10.2.1 won't let my machine sleep! The hard disk spins down and the monitor shuts off, but the fan doesn't...and it's not really asleep, so you can't wake it up. All I can do is pound on the keyboard and power on and off USB devices for a few minutes, and eventually the machine "hiccups" and comes back to life. Very annoying. I've only shut this thing down twice since I got it, I sleep it all the time. Guess not anymore...

do you have somekind of PCI card (ata card, 2 nd graphics card or scsi card in your computer.
when I had a scsi card in my dual 500, it also didn't "deep" sleep (that was in 10.1) so I just removed the scsi card right away and that solved it!!

Downloading the (10.2.1)Updater on my work NT machine right now, as I do all the big downloads. Will install tonight, but every Apple updater I've loaded this way works. Something screwy with your permissions maybe? Who knows?
Anyway, I'm going to dust down my Sinclair Spectrum 48K Ram, Zilog Z80 1Mhz and get down to some serious fun! Never had to upgrade the OS with that baby! Oh the joys of loading programs for 10 minutes from cassette tapes.

For the past couple of hours, I've been trying to contemplate (while my B&W G3 PowerMac screen flashes on bootup since upgrading) why I even bother installing Mac updates knowing that I play Russian Roulette with my Mac.

Anyway, I've done the control-V at bootup and I am trying to read the top line on my screen but it flashes so fast that I cannot read it and transcribe it.

I've been looking around Apple's forums and have seen a pattern with B&W G3s that have upgraded processors, mostly Sonnett's, but mine is a Powerlogix. Apple poseponed the massive QE fix. It's in your mind that it's faster. Launch times, maybe. But not the overall QE rendering.

The QE fix will be included in 10.3. Along with removal of the spinning beach ball, your mail working properly, your FTP working properly, your 3rd party menu enhancements working properly, and a complete UI re-write that actually follows known UI standards. Oh, and one new, completely pointless feature that you already had in OS 9. All for $129. =|

Anyway... I cant open Mail either after the update, even after removing the extra 700k Mail.app file as reccomended here. I had Mail stored in a subfolder within Applications, so perhaps the update could not find it and just did a partial install on some of the mail-realted files???? Any ideas or known solutions out there yet?

OK, I found the solution somewhere else... copy the mail app and launch the copy. It works now! (though it makes me a little uncertain of what other invisible problems may be lurking after this update)

trust me i had a similar problem. If you thin it screwed your computer cause the gray apple is just sitting their loading. Even if the hard drive is making no noise. DO NOT WORRY. Let it sit for like 15-20 mins. IT WILL BOOT. Then after that everytging will be normail again. dont keep hittin restart

This guy is a troll. This exact same message has been posted at least one other time after an update. And the standard response is, don't upgrade if you're on a mission critical machine.

Definitely feels snappier. No problems w/ mail.app except as already noted, it did ask for access to the keychain which it didn't do before but that is likely an intentional change.

Jaguar incompatability

1Gig 800mH G4 iMac's screen will not sleep, firewire Que M3 drive doesn't show up on screen, screen saver slide show slows everyting down when changing slides after installing Jaguar. ????
