Apple's next-generation operating system, Mac OS X, tops Wired's Top 10 Vaporware products for 2000. "Last year's winner of the Vaporware Awards was Microsoft for Windows 2000, the oft-delayed update to Windows. This year, the crown passes to Apple, for Mac OS X, the oft-delayed update to the Mac OS."

Vaporware?

There is a difference here between Windows 2000 and MacOS X. Windows 2000 was delayed, delayed and delyed until they finally shipped a product under version 1.0 that should have been a beta. On the other hand the delays weren't that bug of a deal with MacOS X. Plus, MacOS X is going through the bete testing first and version 1.0 second. The way it's supposed to be.

the final macosx was supposed to be here this past summer. instead we got a delay, a beta, more delays, a promise for january- and now a delay until march... just watch- come march it will be postponed again.

How is it vaporware? I've got it installed on my G3. I guess this CD doesn't really exist because it says "Public Beta" instead of "Final Version" on it, eh?
Yup. Suuure is vaporware. All hype, no product. Yup yup yup.

Better term needed

You can't call either product vapourware. It's exsists. Copeland was only borderline vapourware. To have a copy of a public beta or the fact that Windows 2000 has been out for a while proves that they are not vapourware.

Time to start throwing round terms like 'faultyware' crappyware 'delayedware' etc.

Vapourware is an iMac that is good for gamers. Doesn't exsist, never has in any form either except for the talk of Apple executives.

Remedial English

Some people (including Wired's writers) need to brush up on their English before using the word vaporware on products that clearly do not fit the definition of nonexistent software. It just goes to show the sad state of education in this country when its citizens can't even communicate properly in their native language.

However I tend to agree with the notion that vaporware is a product that exists mainly in the minds of the marketing folks and maybe the programmers. I don't think vaporware should be used to label products that are not only compiled and run, but have reached the beta stage.

open the websters on your desk and tell me if it;s there. ask your mom if she knows what it means. since it's not in websters, and your mother is clueless, i doubt that means they're both lacking a command of the english language as the poster above states.

the use or misuse of 'vaporware' does not show a lack of education in the u.s.

Jan Delivery?

Where did you get a release date for Jan or March? Steve said it would be released some time this year, I don't recall him give any specific dates. Remember this aint like smackin together dos and some
bizarro-mac like shell like windows 9X was, this is like surgically attaching a dump truck to a Ferrari. Just ask any of those BSD propeller heads and they will agree that it's pretty cool to see the Mac OS fused with UNIX. Whereas Win NT is just a lame copy (go figure) of the best parts of the UNIX file system, its just dumbed down waaay down.

no but the fact that americans still spell vapour as vapor and colour as color proves that the state of education there is poor. Afterall if the writers of Wired brushed up on their English then surely they would spell it correctly.
But then if we all get our word processor to check our spelling then we are all doomed!!

Dictionaries are notorious for being always out of date when it comes to jargon. Wired's writers are supposed to be on the bleeding edge of technology news. If they don't know what vaporware really is and will call Mac OS X nonexistent when you can go right ahead and install the public beta on their Macs after ordering it from the Apple Store, then that makes them functionally illiterate.

As a Brit, we often joke about the way Americans spell 'color' and 'vapor' - however, to disagree with the previous post, I don't think this is an education issue - American English and British English have evolved differently.
I don't want anyone to get the idea that all Brits think US education is poor - many have little experience of it, so we really do not know (of course previous poster may not be a Brit)
