iMac, Profile 4 close competitors: article

An AZcentral article attempts to determine which desktop PC -- the Apple iMac or the Gateway Profile 4 -- bests the other in performance, ease of use and reliability. According to the independently conducted testing, neither machine is able to declare outright victory. Both machines are built around 15-inch flat-panel displays. While the $1000 Gateway has larger RAM and storage allotments than the $1300 iMac, it narrowly edges the iMac in performance, despite including a CPU with a megahertz rating nearly three times that of the iMac. The machines' Quake III benchmarks differed by only four frames per second; Photoshop results revealed the 2.8GHz Gateway was only marginally faster.

    Processor

3 times the speed processor ... I don't care that their processor has to be 3 times as fast. Basically they're equal performing machines and the Gateway is CHEAPER by almost 25%!
Apple had to switch to the 'switch' adds because they can't do the toasting bunnies commercials anymore!

Hopefully they can in the future ... but like with most things with Apple, next year. What I hate, I'll wait until next year and be somewhat disappointed. I really think they have to rethink their consumer line.

    What value Style?

How surprised am I that I can watch the same TV programmes on a £3,000 Bang & Olufsen TV as on a £1,000 Sony equivalent. What price does one wish to put on the impressive iMac styling versus the afterthought of the Gateway?

    Cheaper BUT..

Sheesh we already went through all this...

The base Gateway doesn't have firewire...
has a smaller hard drive... and none of the iApps..

IF you ADD the missing hardware it's only $140 cheaper. BUt no amount of money can make it look good.

    25% cheaper???

The Gateway compared in the article is not 25% cheaper. It's the same price. The iMac needs to add $140 to up the memory and harddrive perhaps, but it also comes with a superdrive which isn't an option on the Gateway.

Also, the article specifically talks about the superiority of the mac monitor at the same price. Where do you get this 25% cheaper business?
