Gimp-Print 4.22 adds more printer support

Gimp-Print 4.2.2-rc3, a utility that allows users to use a variety of printers using CUPs printing architecture in Jaguar, is now available as a standard Mac OS X installer package. The release includes an illustrated guide for setting up Gimp-Print printer drivers using the standard Mac OS X Print Center utility, including instructions for both direct-connected USB printers and network printing to inexpensive print servers over a TCP/IP network.

Great work

Kudoes to Robert and his team for putting out a great package of drivers. This is really not a "utility" but a package of drivers for older (and newer) printers. A great step Apple has taken in implementing CUPS; now I can use my older epson printer.

Borderless printing?

Will this package allow my Epson Stylus Photo 780 to print borderless pictures? The official Epson driver does not allow this in OS X, only in their OS 9 driver, and it's a major pain to load up Classic just to print something borderless.

Almost but not quite

Wow, great timing - needed this desperately - converting an office full of lawyers to Macs ... "The Switch" ... and have egg on my face because their HP LaserJet 5 is unsupported. This package got that printer working... BUT all the prints come out very light, even with a new cartridge installed. None of the adjustment controls seem to fix it. Damn, looks like I'll have to go buy a new printer after all. So close and yet so far. Well, thanks for the work on this anyway...

Almonst but not quite.

I recommend the HP LJ4100n, I have 4 of these and they seem to support just about every OS with drivers. There fantastic printer too.

to open the door to third party developers. gimp-print was made possible by Apple's supporting CUPS in Jaguar in the first place.

We'll see how this works in a few days, Epson has their C-USB-PK4 back in stock and for 1.00 more they'll ship it UPS Ground!
I get to finally use the Photo EX I bought 2 years ago!!!

the C-USB-PK4 is a USB to parallel printer cable [USB Adapter Kit].
For only 39.00. Its been Back-Ordered from everywhere for weeks!

Please don't bash Apple if you don't know what your talking about. It's Epson, HP, Canon, and Lexmark's fault that we haven't had drivers. I believe that Apple wrote the original set of print drivers that shipped with earlier builds of X themselves to get people to switch to the new OS. Apple did a brillant thing by adding support for the Common Unix Print Services (CUPS) to OS 10.2. We can now leverage the hard work of the thankless teams of open source developers that have written drivers for your unsupported printers in their spare time. In response to an earlier post, these drivers are FREE. Let me repeat, written by generous people for you to use for FREE. I have spent $99 in the past for a package of drivers and a cable to use an unsupported printer under OS 9. A hundred dollars to do what the manufacturer should of done! I loaded Gimp-Print last night and was able to use my Epson 700, a printer abandoned by the manufacturer (read: never going to be supported, ever!), which for the last year and a half has been an ugly beige paperweight. Not only that but I'm sharing it across my airport network with my other computers....amazing! Every time I set foot on these boards I get so disgusted by the so called Apple loyalsts bashing Apple because they can't wrap their heads around the bigger picture. "My printer don't work cuz Apple sux!" Please think before you type.

If you want boarderless printing, call Epson and complain. If they hear it enough they might stop treating the Mac community like 2nd class citizens.

i have used usb printer sharing, but how does gimp print share a older printer?

the epson 700 is old mac serial, right? are you using a usb to serial adapter?

do both machines need to be running 10.2?

computer to computer -or- airport to ethernet with router?

long live the mac, to h*** with the whiners. thanks for your help.

It's really simple. I'm using an Epson PK-4 USB to parallel adapter. I loaded the Gimp-Print drivers on my girlfriend's iMac running 10.2 and plugged in the printer. Follow the instructions for G-P, the config is simple. In a couple of minutes I had the iMac spitting out prints. Gimp-Print uses the print center in 10.2 and the integration is as good if not better than the manufacturer's drivers. I've got Airport cards in both the iMac and my Powerbook and have a Rev B (white) Airport base station connected to a cable internet connection. For the he11 of it I thought I'd test Rendezvous. I turned 'printer sharing' on in the 'sharing' system pref pane of the iMac. I opened my Powerbook running 10.2 and went to the print center....the printer appeared...zero user intervention! I opened a document and hit print and it worked. I didn't even have the drivers loaded on the Powerbook. I was floored! It looks like G-P supports a mirad of connections...routers with print servers and USB adapters. If you are using a USB to Serial adapter like the Keyspan Twin Serial adapter, you should load the adapter drivers prior to trying the G-P drivers. Anyone who thinks that Apple has dropped the ball should have their head exaimined. Adopting a *nix based OS was the best thing that Apple has ever done. Hope this helps.
