.Mac: no support for firewalls, proxy servers

updated 10:50 am EDT, Fri September 6, 2002

Michele Zundo notes that .Mac's iDisk and Backup cannot be used behind firewalls or proxy servers: "This has been confirmed by Apple representative in the support forum....Also the backup application cannot be used in 'local' mode to back up to CD since it checks at startup the existence of an active .mac subscrition."

    Yes it can...

That is untrue. iDisk and backup v1.2 work just fine behind a firewall. If you just let it do it's thing it works... occasionally I get disconnected part way through the backup, but opening the iDisk on the desktop fixes that.

MacNN confirm this s*** before posting it.

    Backup

You can backup without a connection. (at least in Backup 1.2 on Jaguar, not sure about other OS/Backup versions)

Just close the program with the 'Backup to CD' option selected....then when it starts up it will not hunt for an iDisk.

It may work even if 'Backup to iDisk' is selected, I haven't tried....if it does then it must be an OS / Backup 1.2 feature because Backup 1.0 definitely did not startup without a connection!

    Firewall

    It depends what you firewall...

If you firewall the port backup uses you obviously cannot backup.....otherwise it will work!

    Another reason to move...

Looks like the guys at .macRefuge are offering a great deal for former iTools subscribers. They have twice the disk space (200MB instead of 100MB) plus a 50MB web/POP emailbox (vs 15MB from Apple), with 10 emailboxes, for the same $49 Apple is asking for. Plus you can get your own domain name for free. They have been around since 1995, which means a lot in today's web world. Also they already host several Mac sites (check under Links).

Glad someone is giving .mac some good competition. Check it out at:

    RE: Another reason to mov

At least when you use .Mac you are giving to Apple and not to some Wintel company trying to steal some of Apple's business by posing as a Mac company. I was proud to pay for a .Mac account and two additional email accounts.
Are they hosting MacRefuge on any Apple hardware? Probably not. Anyway, their look blows.!

    Funnily enough

www.mac.com runs on BSD not Mac OS X....

Don't flame me, I know Mac OS X based around BSD....but when you find out what www.apple.com is running it is mac os x....so I assume BSD means BSD not OS X....however the tests netcraft does to work out what OS is used could be inacurate.
