IDG negotiates for Boston Expo move

Boston convention officials will meet tomorrow with the head of IDG World Expo in an effort to bring Macworld Expo back to Boston in 2004, according a report in The Boston Globe. The Expo took place in Boston until 1998, when IDG moved the show to the Jacob Javits Center in New York City, in search of a larger convention hall. IDG is looking for 2-3 years of rent-free use, as well as discounts on electricity, catering, and other services as well as a guarantee on Boston-area hotels at no more than $150 a night, according to the report.

    bye, bye

This seems to make it clear that apple is much more interested in the student/consumer market than the professional content creation industry. Or they wouldn't move it out of NY. No matter, the past 2-3 expos in NY were lackluster at best. Now that the show has contracted so much, it could probably easily fit in their World Trade.. it would be totally lost at Bayside. So they don't even need the new convention center..

    whatever

Apple doesn't decided where Macworld goes. IDG Expos makes tthat decision. I'm sure Apple has some influence, but Steve & Co. don't run these expos.

How? Its Boston wanting to move it back. Its not Apple going "Please take us back, we're sorry!".

And maybe the reason the shows in NY are so lackluster (and small) is the high prices at Javitts, combined with high lodging costs.

    Hynes

"IDG World Expo is considering moving the show to Boston in 2003 and using the Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center for one year"

From an earlier boston.com article on the same issue.

This would hold the show over until the new convention center in Boston is ready. Remember that moving back to Boston was always in IDG expo's plans.

    Cheap lodging

Whenever I visited the Boston expo, I would stay in the local Youth Hostel. Last time (1994), just $17/night. STUPID to stay in a hotel... you meet interesting people at the youth hostel and save $$$.

    I'd consider....

...a drive to Boston...i've done it from Cincinnati before for Seybold and had a good time....gives me an excuse to visit Boston again. And Hostels are a great idea too. But you won't see me driving to New York.

    Get Steve Jobs drunk

Maybe he will actually announce some new cool products. (OK I am a dreamer) The NY shows had nothing but bad news for the past two years, maybe Boston will have better luck.

It pretty obvious that the only convention worth going to is San Fran. Its about the only show that's consistently had major announcements. To bad this coast does not rate any more.

Please bring it back to Boston!

As as creative professional who lives halfway between the two cities. I have enjoyed six or seven Expos in Boston.

After attending the first two Expos in NYC with no joy I haven't returned. Even my spouse, a New York City native and another creative professional agrees.

In Boston it just seems easier, more pleasant and much less expensive. I only take day trips to either city. --Beantown supporter.

    Great!

The biggest complaint from those companies who haven't been attending MWNY has been costs associated with the NY expo. Maybe the move back to Boston will get some of them to return.
