    time to switch?

I've been using MacinTax for about 5 years and in my opinion, the program has become more bloated and more annoying over time. Last year, Kiplinger's Tax Cut got better reviews but I had already bought Macintax. This year, Intuit has changed the name (to bring it in line with the Windoze version) to TurboTax and is bundling a software product that every recent Mac owner already got with their iMac: Williams and Sonoma's Guide to Good Cooking. Who needs it? That was it for me. Time to give the other guy my money. Kiplingers also claims to import Macintax data, and it's a fair bit cheaper, so I don't see a downside.

    Re: Time to Switch?

Last year I decided to try Kiplinger Tax Cut instead of MacInTax after reading a glowing review about Kiplinger's product in MacWorld. It was a huge mistake. I don't know how MacWorld came to the conclusion that Tax Cut was superior. Tax Cut was ridden with bugs that caused it to crash after entering in all of my W-2 info. Even with the very late release of a bug fix only a couple of weeks before the tax deadline, I could not get it to work on either of my Macs. Kiplinger's tech support was no help and many other user's were complaining as well. Do a search in Macfixit.com's forums for Tax Cut and you will see all the problems people were having last year. I ended up using Turbo Tax on my sister's PC to file my taxes. I will be switching back to Quicken's product. It may be more bloated, but it is reliable.

    Kiplinger's is fine

I've used both in the past, and used Kiplinger TaxCut last year. It was easy, didn't crash, and worked like a charm for my taxes. I'll certainly buy again, without regrets.

However, even the long-form 1040 and 1040A aren't too difficult to work with, so it's no big deal, either way. It's just basic math.

    RE: Time to switch

Be sure to back up your data before using Kiplinger. I had been using Macintax for the past two years, but last year I decided to give TaxCut a go. What a mistake! It locked up my machine so badly that I had to boot from my repair CD to correct the damage Tax Cut did to my Mac. I promptly returned it and purchased Macintax.

YMMV, but be sure to back up before using what I consider very poor software.

    it's crapware

i was a longtime user of kiplinger's tax software until, one year, they had the nerve to sell (in retail packaging), a completely non-functional version of the software along with a "readme" that said that in a few weeks they would have ready an "update" that would make their software work correctly. of course, the windows software version didn't have this little problem. of course.
even when they finally released the 1+ megabyte "update", their software was still a nightmare to use. it drove me to use macintax and i have never looked back.
yes, i know that macintax is overpriced, bloated with dubious "multimedia helpers" and comes with windows-only "gifts" but at least it does manage to work.

    Even form 1040....

If 1040 and 1040A were all anyone had to worry about, I doubt anyone would be able to charge much more than $9.95 for tax software. For those of use stuck with Schedule A, Schedule C, depreciation, home office, dependent care and so on and on, tax softwrae that works is a major time and stress saver --- and compared to an accountant, a major money saver.

Frankly, I believe most of the people who supported Steve Forbes's flat taxx proposal did so not out of deep thought over the social justice or budget implications, nor even out of avarice --- they were just horrified at the tax return process.

    one possible gotcha!

As Macintouch points out...they don't tell you which states will be supported on Mac and they're only doing 26! Lame. What do I do with my free state coupon if they don't support my state???

This is straight from the Kiplingers website...
TaxCut State Editions are available for every state with an income tax for Windows and 26 states for Macintosh. Automatically transfer your federal information to your state return. Enclosed is a rebate coupon for one FREE* copy of TaxCut State

    Tax Software

The lower price and free filing may convince me to give TaxCut a try this year. Even though Mac software was a major player in building Intuit and their CEO sits on the Apple board of directors, they have been reluctantly supporting Macs for the past few years with bloated buggy software and trying to find a reason to get out of the Mac biz all together. As far as I'm concerned they can take their Winbloze Tax software and try to make it work on ME till the cows come home. For the past 3 years I have been using FREE tax software through TaxAct.com. Yes, It's windows only but it works great with SoftWindows emulation software and did I mention it's FREE. I always print my long forms and mail them in because I consider PAYING to submit your taxes electronically an oxymoron. The government should be paying us to submit electronically since it is cheaper for them to process that way.

    Read the fine print...

The free filing and state tax software are both after receiving a mail-in rebate.

h***, I've bought Macintax the past couple of years and I just don't need it. I'll just keep my cash and fill out the EZ form.

now, if turbotax would sell an annual updater package for 10 15 bucks to update tax changes (if any) instead of me having to buy the entire package over again, that'd be sweet. h***, i'm tempted to just file with my 1999 turbotax. i'm a residential non business owner with no special exceptions. i don't think any tax laws have changed that would affect me.

'course, i'm no tax lawyer either, and i'm not really willing to risk failing an audit for using outdated software 8-)
