NewsFactor: Jaguar a hit, Apple still sinking

Despite the technical and aesthetic milestones achieved with its new "Jaguar" OS, Apple faces an "uphill battle" in recuperating lost market share, explains a NewsFactor columnist. Citing comments by both the Giga Information Group and IDC firms, the article concludes that Apple has made many "strategic errors," which have only been compounded by the "overwhelming dominance" of Microsoft Windows. One glaring strategic fault, according to the report, is that Apple operating systems lock buyers in to Apple hardware, whereas Microsoft Windows works on countless brands.

    So that's it?

It's either world domination or nothing? Man, if it weren't for Apple computers would be so *boring*. At least they force everyone else to at least try something, anything. Of course, people still think floppies are the way to go. When will they learn?

    Market share

Apple won't get back its 16% market share (which dates back to 1994). Wow! However, isn't a puny 4% share of a much larger market better than 16% of a small market?

Oh, and the problem is hardware, they say. "Windows allows people to buy whatever hardware they want." Great, but you're still stuck with windows.

    Pay now, or pay later...

You may be locked into to Mac hardware, but if you go w/ M$ windoze, or thier other apps, you are pretty much locked into their software. Over the years, my experience has been that M$ apps work fine w/ other M$ apps, but try and use a third party app and good luck. Now, when you add in these costs, I'd rather pay a little more for the hardware and get the better package.

"Microsoft Windows works on countless brands"

Well, I'd say it DOESN'T work on countless brands. But that doesn't seem to matter, does it? ;-)

    Dumb

Just because I jam an engine in a soda can, doesn't make it a car. Same goes with computers. Look at the damn eMachines.. and all these great brands such as Tandy and Packard Bell... yeah they sure are around today. It's these same financial wizards bashing macs, that say the PC compatible world is the only way to go. Oh please.

Shouldn't that sentence end with ", when you can get Windows to work." Hey, come on! These are the jokes, man.

    Some good points

I feel that the piece contained some interesting suggestions...Certainly OS X should be very cheap indeed, if not free...Mac and other value-added software and services should also be very cheap, if not free. Going from 16% to 4% in less than a decade does show major strategic errors. The OS X transition probably is hurting as well, as so many older (even slightly older, without AGP, who have been left out of the Extreme business) cannot run X with the speed they expect of 9, (surely there was a way to get a nicer looking GUI without such a performance hit? I recall even Display PostScript on the 68040 NeXT seemed snappier), and with the price/performance gap so massive now, they may well go WinTel when they upgrade. We cannot ignore the reality of the WinTel threat, which is still growing. We also need to be more critical of Apple, as if things dont change soon (POWER4, etc.) we will soon be in irrelevant Amigaland....

    Market share

. Going from 16% to 4% in less than a decade does show major strategic errors.

But that assumes (a) a static or stable market, and (b) how the statistics are determined.

The computer market took off in the mid to late 90s, esp. with the growth of the World Wide Web. But most important was that companies finally saw that computers on more than a few desks actually made sense (both financially and productivity-wise). But keep in mind as companies bought more computers, they got the same type they already had. Which was IBM PC clones (why did they have IBM, well, IBM was known as a business company, Apple was that fruity company. Nobody ever lost their job buying IBM, they used to say). So the business market goes IBM-compatible PC. And their not switching, mainly because of the costs to do so (all new hardware and software). Companies that used macs and switched to PCs usually did so because of some idiots decision that PCs were easier and cheaper to maintain, and, well, other companies use them. Plus, the IT heads became more powerful, and they just like computers they can control (and it doesn't hurt when MS and PC makers puts kickback money into their pockets).

My question would be, does Apple need a 16% marketshare? (OH, god, would that mean 4 times as many whiners on the MacNN boards???)

    countless

The only reason you would want a wide selection of hardware brands is for price competition or to switch to a more reliable brand. Well the price is a bit higher for Apple, but you get what you pay for. Apple makes hardware that works. (Minus the fact my Quicksilver forces me to use an iMic.)
