Microsoft yesterday said that "critical" security lapses in its Office software and Internet Explorer Web browser put tens of millions of users at risk of having their files read and altered by online attackers, according to a CNN report. An attacker, using e-mail or a Web page, could use Internet related parts of Office to run programs, alter data and wipe out the hard drive as well as view file and clipboard contents on a user's system.

    CNN's crack team shines!

Office is a software product that runs on Windows and is used to write documents and crunch numbers.

Where would we be without this kind of news and information! I'm sure glad I read CNN so I know what this mysterious "office" software is.

Anyway, it looks like the vulnerabilities are limited to the Windows versions of Office, so you'll probably only need to worry about your work PC. Don't bother going to TechNet, just hit Windows Update and you should be all set.

Or... you could buy a Macintosh... hint-hint...

    A little worse than Apple

And some people were complaining when Apple released the last security update because of the frequency of Security updates. They were blasting Apple because they are becoming so much like Microsoft in terms of security.

This article proves them wrong....very wrong.

    Uh! oh!

    Really surprising :D

Err, BTW, why there are no negative reviews for Office v.X. Am I the only one that find it unbearably slow?

    seems like ever since

Microsoft (aka Bill Gates) announced that they admit that security is a huge concern MS apps that we've been hearing more about them. It's gotten to the point that I'm scared of using MS products when I'm online. The number of security holes may've been there in the past, but now that I hear more about them, it's good publicity for Apple!

    Omission

They should have also said, "Mac versions of Office are unaffected. Mac software is better than Windows software. In fact, Macs rule--let's all dump Windows."

    :-)

    Can anyone say "DUH"!!!

If most people have not already figured this out... then they have no business owning a computer, period...

BTW>> Does an admission like this, open MS up for any type of class action lawsuit? One would think that they should be able to be held accountable for this. I mean, if it was my small company.. I would bet that there would be reprocussions from something like this.

Try turning off Quartz font smoothing to see if that makes a difference. See http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20020802093020568 for more info.

    Trustworthy costs $100mil

Soooooo, judging from that CNN article, Bill Gates puts the cost of being trustworthy at $100 million (the cost of finding/fixing bugs)

That's small beans compared to the billions made from extortion, blackmail, thievery and outright hijacking of international standards... hehehe trustworthy... Gotta admit, these guys have ballz. ;)

What is interesting is that most people will still use their c*** and pay into their schemes, regardless of the consequences, virii, snoopware and all. Amazing.
