Kensington intros flat-panel accessories

updated 11:15 am EDT, Thu August 22, 2002

Kensington today debuted seven new products that it claims "significantly improves style, comfort and productivity when using flat panel computer monitors." The Flat Panel Monitor Stand ($60) positions the monitor up off the desktop at an adjustable height, has two adjustable shelves, and supports flat panel monitors up to 21" or 35 lbs. The Flat Panel Desk Mount Arm ($180) allows monitors to "float" and rotate in virtually any location and position above the desktop with a 9" arm that extends from an adjustable base in any direction, rotates a full 360 degrees at its base, and tilts 90 degrees (up, down, left or right). The Flat Panel Cubicle Hanger ($120) "takes the monitor completely off the desktop" using a height adjustable, tilt-enabled arm mounted to the the side of the cubicle. It also introduced new Flat Panel Glare Filters (15"--$120 and 17"--$140) to protect the sensitive LCD screens and reduce eyestrain by improving contrast and color definition and new Flat Panel Privacy Filters (15"--$250 and 17"--$330), which blurs the monitor's display when viewed from either side at more than 25 degrees from center for improved privacy.

    isn't it ironic?

didn't people used to complain about the viewing radius of LCD monitors? And now that they've got the viewing radius up, people need their LCD monitors to have a minute viewing radius? ah, progress.

    Portrait mode

the Flat Panel Desk Mount Arm allows to pivot the LCD monitor in portrait mode, but alas there's no way yet to set the display in MacOS X in this format yet...

    hmmm...

y'know, is it just me, or are all of these accessories downright industrial-grade ugly? functional, sure. but kensignton does put out some s*** hardware, so i would think there'd be just a little more form in this function.

    re:hmmm...

Nope .... butt ugly ... but functional. Even if the monitor stand was clear or something. I guess they have a lifetime supply of yellowish plastic ...

    not really for Apple...

...that's why they're cubicle farm ugly. Neither the Flat Panel Desk Mount Arm or the Flat Panel Cubicle Hanger are compatible with Apple LCDs.

    Don't believe everything

I checked out the Kebsignton web page and looked at their Compatability list... there are no Apple products listed that the new arms are compatible with. Butt Ugly. But functional? But not yet...

    G4 colors would be nice..

I've actually emailed Kensington a couple of times asking them to put out their cordless trackball in colors that match the G4 towers. (Yeah, okay, I am both a geek and a slave to fashion.) I dunno why these new accessories are so damn ugly. I mean, they could be much nicer without costing a penny more to make.

    _Apple_ Flat Panel

I've got to chime in on this one, too.

First. These things are U-G-L-Y. Cube farm fodder. Kensington _does_ do great industrial design,,, what happenend to these?

Second. Why has no 3rd party or apple, produced an arm that is as beautiful as the flat panels? Are the 8 of us here who have posted so far the only ones who care??? I don't belive it.

Third. Every flat panel arm on the market indicates VESA compatibility. The apple LCD screens are not VESA compliant.
