RealNetworks told MacNN today that it does not currently have plans to incorporate NTI's high-speed CD writing software into the RealOne Player for Mac OS X, (Released last month as a beta at Macworld Expo NY). Real yesterday announced it was replacing Roxio's 2x CD writing component with NTI's 52x CD burning engine; however, the announcement was only pertained to RealOne Player for Windows, which includes Jukebox and CD burning features. Real was unable to confirm whether the "player-only" Mac version would include the high-speed NTI CD authoring engine. The final version of RealOne Player for OS X is due at the end of the year, included will be support for: SuperPass, and Real's digital media subscription service featuring exclusive programming from ABCNews.com, 'Big Brother 3,' CNN, FOXSports, MLB, and NASCAR.

    ok...

Do we need another CD burning app?
I have never been impressed with anything from Real...if I needed a program to burn CDs I would certainly not look to them for a solution.

    What we really need

is a cd-burning app that supports CD-TEXT. Our burners support it, so why has nobody added it to the Mac burning software???? EVERY PC BURNING APP SUPPORTS IT! :(

    Pffft...

Has anyone actually SEEN or USED the Windows version? Ugh. Thanks for the thought Real, but I'll gladly stick with just the player.

    Hope they fix the bugs

What I'm hoping is that they fix the many outstanding bugs in the beta. The current OS X player crashes when accessing a fair amount of embedded content, for example all of the movies at mtv.com. And trying to get a bug report to the Mac engineers at Real.com is pretty difficult; the e-mail address listed when you download the software is for "feature requests only"....

    I must agree...

I must agree with Real's decision. I think that they realize, along with most users here, that CD burning on the Mac platform is pretty much wrapped up by Apple's DiscBurner and Roxio's Toast (the latter for professionals or experienced users) and that their efforts to bring port another burning app would be wasted.

ewestby: your comments get read by the folks at real, I assure you. Whether or not someone responds directly, they are taken seriously and investigated.

Please, anyone who has thoughts about beta 1, send them in, more feedback (positive or otherwise) is a good thing.

    Real Beta

CD burning doesn't bother me one bit. What bothers me is the support, or lack there of, from Real. I have been watching Big Brother for the last three weeks with the Live feed provided by Real. It has worked pretty well for those weeks. About a week ago, I could no longer log in. I called Real on 4 seperate occasions, waiting on hold for an average of 35 minutes before I got 4 completely different stories detailing the problem.
At least the last person (who could see I was pissed) gave me the true reason. Real had to make changes to their server because one user would log in on a PC and then share their cookie which would give several others access to Big Brother without paying. So, Real made a bug fix to prevent this...but also forgot about Mac Users. My OS X Real Player stopped working...it was supposed to be back up as of last night...nope. That's now a week of downtime for a service that is supposed to be non stop.

I must say however, when things did work, they were working pretty well. I hope that from now on when changes likes this are made, Real gets the updates to all versions not just the PC's - this is probably a pipe dream though :)
