Formac today unveiled ADConnect, a DVI to ADC conversion box for that allows users to connect high-quality ADC displays to a Mac and PC. The $80 device, which has a footprint of 8 by 3 inches and is 1.5 inches thick, provides "high-quality conversion at an affordable price." Besides giving Mac and PC owners the option to use ADC displays with a standard DVI interface, the ADConnect also allows multiple ADC displays to be attatched to the same computer.

    Support Apple

Apples DVI-ADC adapter costs twice as much as Formac's ADConnect. No whining, Apple is great and deserves the extra money that it charges for its products.

This is also true with the .Mac services and the Jaguar upgrade - quit complianing about high prices and support the best computer company in the world.

    Well duh.

Yeah, well, I say support Formac and Dr.Bott... who make peripherals for the best computer company in the world, and deserve your money just as much... especially for coming up with the goods way before Apple did on a number of items.

Man. Oh. Man. But that new Formac ADC adapter is fugly.

    Don't support Formac

Formac makes some nice stuff, but I will never, ever buy something from them until they provide Mac OS X drivers for their scsi cards.

I really hate when companies hide things from you and hope that the problem will go away. In formacs case you have to go to the US site (no, the UK one won't do) and dig around until you are told that
"Currently there are no MacOS 10 drivers available for the Formac SCSI cards."
This has been the case for the past year.

    Stupid Apple

Apple must be the stupidest company in the world - after years of making/using their own proprietary solutions (NuBus, Apple Video...) they finally adopted the PC standards (PCI, VGA)... and we, the users, lose nothing.

So now they make a screen, that won't work on most Macs ever built (and s**** purchasers of the older generation of Cinema Displays, who have to buy even more expensive adaptors if they want to use a new machine), and make us buy extra boxes to use the things!?

There's no advantage to the average user in the ADC cable model, it's just vanity on Apple's part. There's only disadvantages - Apple will move the goalposts again and you won't be able to use your *expensive* display without buying yet another expensive adaptor - if you're lucky.

Just build the power supply into the display and use a *standard* connection method (DVI/VGA)! If you want a small and cute package then have the PSU as a separate box, like the Cube.

    Yeah, fugly

Yup, that adapter is rather fugly, as you say. I'm surprised that it is, since Formac usually has pretty nice looking stuff.
I caved and went for their Formac Gallery 1740 earlier this year. I haven't regretted it. For around $850 I got a 17"+ monitor that in most respects is every bit as good as Apple's 17" TFT display, and in some cases better! I actually think it's brighter and clearer. The case design is not as nice or as sturdy as Apple's buuy, hey....

Anyway, really surprised to see an ugly product like that come from them, although an adapter isn't exactly something that's out on display in most cases, so maybe it doesn't matter.

    Formac is dangerous

They are horrible people and are well known for shipping defective products, lying to customers, and being jerks in general. Avoid them like the plague unless you like being screwed. You've been warned.

    Fugly? Who cares?

Who cares what an adapter looks like? You are probably going to put it behind your desk anyway, never seeing it again. Spend the extra $70 on a good mouse to replace Apple's bogus one-button tylenol-caplet mouse.

    Dont Buy Formac!

For me, Formac was a product and customer service nightmare. They make some interesting products, but follow an unethical business model. Buy Formac at your own risk!!
