IBM cuts 15,600 jobs

updated 11:35 am EDT, Wed August 14, 2002

IBM Corp. revealed that it is slashing about 15,600 workers, or about 5% of its total work force, according to a Nando Times article. The announcement was not made public, but rather disclosed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday. Employees that were laid off were notified during the second quarter, which ended June 30. IBM blamed the layoffs on "the recent decline in corporate spending on technology services".

    Nothing to be afraid of

Is there one computer company that didn't have to slack employees lately? It's just that IBM is a very very big computer company. Don't worry, we'll have our G5!

    Don't worry, we'll have our G5!

Sure, but that'll be in 5 years, and it'll be only 2GHz, when Intel and AMD will be at 60GHz. And it'll probably have some of that new-fangled stuff in there, like RDram, 200MHz bus, USB2, Firewire 1.5, AGP 8x, and....oh, sorry, don't know what came over me. Reading all the whining about yesterday's machines must be getting to me...

    Sky is falling

That is only 4% of their workforce. Probably redundant positions.

    Services?

Why would they buy another service company if they are losing money with the one they have?
